चंदन सर्प लपेटिया, चंदन काह कराया। राम-राम विष भीनिया, अमृत कहां समाय।।१५०२।।
The sandalwood tree is entwined by a snake, rendering its fragrance useless. Even the name of Ram is tainted with poison, how can nectar remain?
चकोर भरोसे चंद के, निगले पप्तांगार। कहहिं कबीर दाधे नहीं, ऐसी वस्तु लगार।।१५०३।।
The chakora bird, trusting the moon, swallows burning embers. Kabir says, do not be misled by such false things.
चलती चक्की देख के, मेरे नयन आया रोय। दो पाटन के अन्तरे, सालिम बचा न कोय।।१५०४।।
Seeing the grinding mill in motion, tears come to my eyes. Between the two grinding stones, no grain is spared.
चलते-चलते पगु थका, नगर रहा नव कोस। बीचहिं में डेरा पड़ा, कहो कवन का दोस।।१५०५।।
After walking a long distance, the feet grow tired, and the city is still nine miles away. Resting in the middle, tell me, whose fault is it?
चार चोर चले, पग पनही उतारि। चारों दर थूनी हनी, पंडित करहु बिचारि।।१५०६।।
Four thieves set out, removing their shoes. They hit the four doors' pillars, oh scholars, think about it.
चार मास घन वर्षिया, अति अपूर जल नीर। पेन्हे चढ़त न बखतरी, चुभे न एको तीर।।१५०७।।
For four months the clouds rained, but not a single drop of water quenched the thirst. The armor didn’t rise, nor did an arrow pierce.
चौगोड़ा के देखते, व्याधा भागो जाय। अचरज एक देखहु हो संतो, मुवा कालहि खाय।।१५०८।।
The hunter runs away at the sight of the four-sided drum. Oh saints, see this wonder, that death eats the dead.
छव दर्शन में जो प्रमाणा, तासु नाम बनवारी। कहहिं कबीर ई खलक सयाना, इनमें हमहिं अनारी।।१५०९।।
He who sees proof in the six philosophies is known as Banwari. Kabir says, the world is wise, but I remain a simpleton among them.
जंत्र बजावत हो सुना, टूटि गए सब तार। जंत्र विचारा क्या करें, गए बजावन हार।।१५१०।।
The instrument is heard playing, but all its strings are broken. What can the poor instrument do, as the player has left.
जब लगि डोला तब लगि बोला, तब लगि धन व्यवहार। ड़ाला फूटा बाला गया, कोई न झांके द्वार।।१५११।।
As long as the pitcher was intact, there was speech and trade. But when it broke and the water spilled, no one looks at the door.
जब लगि तारा जगमगे, तब लगि उगे न सूर। जब लगि जीव कम बस डोले, तब लगि ज्ञान न पूर।।१५१२।।
As long as the stars shine, the sun does not rise. Similarly, as long as the soul is entangled in worldly desires, true knowledge does not dawn.
जरा मरण बालापना, चौथा वृद्ध अवस्था आह। जस मुसमसा तके बिलाइ, अस जम घात लगाय।।१५१३।।
Youth, death, childhood, and the fourth is old age. Just like a cat stalks a mouse, death strikes similarly.
जहं गाहक तहं हौं नहीं, हौं तहं गाहक नाहिं। बिनु विवेक भरमत फिरे, पकड़ो शब्द की छांहि।।१५१४।।
Where the customer is, I am not there, and where I am, the customer is not. Without wisdom, people wander aimlessly; grasp the shadow of the word.
जहर जिमीदे रोपिया, अमि सींचे सत बार। कबीर खलक नाहीं तजे, जामहं जौन बिचार।।१५१५।।
If you sow poison and water it with nectar a hundred times, Kabir says, it won’t yield good results; the world won’t abandon its wrong ways.
जहां बोल तहं अक्षर आया, जहं अक्षर तहं मनहिं डिढाया। बोल अबोल एक है सोई, जिन एक लखा सो बिरला होई।।१५१६।।
Where there is speech, there is the word; where the word is, the mind is fixed. Speech and silence are the same; only a rare one realizes this truth.
जहिया जन्म मुक्ता हता, तहिया हता न कोय। छठी तुम्हारी हौं जगा, तू कह चला वियोग।।१५१७।।
When you were born free, there was no separation. On your sixth day, I awakened, but now you speak of separation.
जाकी जिह्वा बंद नहिं, हृदय नांही सांच। ताके संग न लागिये, घाले बटिया मांझ।।१५१८।।
One whose tongue never stops and whose heart lacks truth, don't associate with them; they lead you astray.
जाके चलते रौंदे परा, धरती होइ बेहाल। सो सावन्त घर में जरे, पंडित करहु विचार।।१५१९।।
The one whose actions cause the earth to suffer, such a powerful person will burn in his own house; O learned ones, think about this.
जाके मुनिवर तप करे, वेद थके गुण गाय। सोई देव सिखापनो, कोई नहीं पतियाय।।१५२०।।
The sages have performed penances, and the Vedas have sung their praises. But even the teachings of the gods are doubted; no one believes.
