आया था किस काम को, तू सोया चादर तान। सुरत सँभाल ए गाफिल, अपना आप पहचान।।१५।।
Why have you come into this world if you are just going to sleep wrapped in a blanket? Wake up, O ignorant one, and recognize your true self.
दान दिए धन ना घटे, नदी न घटे नीर। अपनी आँखों देख लो, यूँ क्या कहे कबीर।।१८।।
Giving away wealth does not decrease it, just as water does not decrease in a river. See this with your own eyes, says Kabir.
हीरा वहाँ न खोलिए, जहाँ कुंजड़ों की हाट। बांधो चुप की पोटरी, लागहु अपनी बाट।।२०।।
Do not display your diamond where it is the market of junk dealers. Instead, tie the bundle of silence and move on your path.
कुटिल वचन सबसे बुरा, जारि करै तन हार। साधु वचन जल रूप है, बरसे अमृत धार।।२१।।
Harsh words are the worst; they burn the body and soul. The words of a saint are like water, pouring down as nectar.
मैं रोऊँ जब जगत को, मोको रोवे न कोय। मोको रोवै सोचकर, जो शब्द बोए सो होय।।२२।।
I cry for the world, but no one cries for me. The world should think about what seeds of words it has sown.
सोया साधु जगाइए, करे नाम का जाप। ये तीनों सोए भले, साकत, सिंह, और साँप।।२३।।
Wake up a sleeping saint to chant the name of God. But let these three sleep: the worldly, the lion, and the snake.
पतिव्रता मैली, काली, कुचैल, कुरूप। पतिव्रता के रूप पर, वारो कोटि सरूप।।२६।।
A devoted wife may be dirty, dark, and ugly, but I would sacrifice millions of beauties for her virtue.
हद चाले सो मानव, बेहद चले सो साध। हद-बेहद दोनों तजे, ताको भाव अगाध।।२८।।
A person who follows the rules is human; one who transcends them is a sage. The one who forsakes both boundaries and boundlessness is immersed in divine love.
जाके जिव्याँ बंधन नहीं, हृदय में नाहीं सांच। वाके संग न लागिए, खाली वटिया कांच।।३०।।
Do not associate with those who are not bound by any principles and have no truth in their hearts. It is like eating shards of glass.
तीरथ गए ते एक फल, संत मिले फल चार। सतगुरु मिले अनेक फल, कहे कबीर विचार।।३१।।
Visiting holy places gives one benefit; meeting a saint gives four benefits; but meeting a true Guru gives countless benefits, says Kabir.
हंसा मोती चुन लिया, कंचन थार भराय। जो जन मारग न जाने, सो तिस कहा कराय।।३३।।
The swan strings pearls, but the crow fills its beak with trash. What can be done with someone who does not know the right path?
साधु ऐसा चहिए, जैसा सूप सुभाय। सार-सार को गहि रहे, थोथ देइ उड़ाय।।३९।।
A saint should be like a sieve, which retains the essence and lets go of the chaff.
छीर-रूप सतनाम है, नीर-रूप व्यवहार। हंस-रूप कोइ साधु है, सत का छाननहार।।४४।।
The essence of truth is like milk, while the worldly actions are like water. A true saint is like a swan who separates the milk from water.
ज्यों तिल मांहि तेल है, ज्यों चकमक में आग। तेरा सांई तुझ में है, बस जाग सके तो जाग।।४५।।
Just as oil is in sesame seeds and fire is in flint, your Lord resides within you. Wake up if you can.
जा कारण जग ढूँढ़िया, सो तो घट ही मांहि। परदा दिया भरम का, ताते सूझे नाहिं।।४६।।
What you seek in the world is within you. The veil of delusion covers it, and therefore, you cannot see it.
फूटी आँख विवेक की, लखे न संत-असंत। जाके संग दस-बीस हैं, ताको नाम महंत।।५२।।
With the eye of wisdom gone blind, one cannot distinguish between the saint and the non-saint. The one who is surrounded by ten or twenty followers is considered a great soul.
दया-भाव हृदय नहीं, ज्ञान थके बेहद। ते नर नरक ही जाएंगे, सुनि-सुनि साखी-शब्द।।५३।।
Without a compassionate heart, knowledge is of no use. Those who lack compassion will ultimately go to hell, despite hearing many teachings.
ऊँचे पानी न टिके, नीचे ही ठहराय। नीचा हो सो भरिए पिए, ऊँचा प्यासा जाय।।५७।।
Water cannot remain high; it settles at the bottom. The lower it is, the more it fills and quenches thirst, while the higher it is, it remains thirsty.
सुख-सागर का शील है, कोई न पावे थाह। शब्द बिना साधु नहीं, द्रव्य बिना नहीं शाह।।६१।।
The virtue of the ocean of happiness cannot be fathomed. Without words, there are no saints; without wealth, there are no kings.
तेरा साँईं तुझमें, ज्यों फू़लन में बास। कस्तूरी का हिरन ज्यों, फिर-फिर ढूँढ़त घास।।६४।।
Your Lord resides within you, like the musk deer searching for musk. Like the deer searching for musk outside, you search for your Lord outside.
जहाँ गाहक, तहाँ हूँ नहीं, जहाँ मैं गाहक नाँय। मूरख यह भरमत फिरे, पकड़ शब्द की छाँय।।६७।।
Where there are no customers, I am not there; where I am not a customer, there is no place for me. Fools wander about, grasping at the shadow of words.
बलिहारी वा दूध की, जामें निकसे घीव। घी साखी कबीर की, चार वेद का जीव।।६८।।
I am grateful to the milk from which ghee is obtained. The ghee is a witness to Kabir's teachings, which encompass the essence of the four Vedas.
घट का परदा खोल कर, सन्मुख दे दीदार। बाल सनेही सांइया, आवा अंत का यार।।७०।।
Unveil the cover of the vessel and witness the divine presence. The beloved Lord is always near, like a true friend in the end.
कबिरा खालिक जागिया, और न जागे कोय। जाके विषय विष भरा, दास बंदगी होय।।७१।।
Kabir says that the Creator is awake, but no one else is. Only the one who is full of worldly poison and devotion can truly awaken.
सब आए इस एक में, डाल-पात फल-फूल। कबिरा पीछा क्या करै, गह पकड़ी जब मूल।।७४।।
All are included in this one essence—leaves, twigs, fruits, and flowers. Kabir questions, what is left behind when one grasps the root?
ज़हर की ज़र्मी में है रोपा, अभी खींचे सौ बार। कबिरा खलक न तजे, जामे कौन विचार।।७६।।
Even if poison is planted a hundred times, the soul does not abandon the body. Kabir questions, who can contemplate this?
साँई आगे साँच है, साँई साँच सुहाय। चाहे बोले केस रख, चाहे घौंट भुण्डाय।।७९।।
The truth is in the presence of the Divine; the Divine is truth and beauty. Whether one keeps long hair or shaves, it is of no consequence.
संत पुरुष की आरसी, संतन की ही देह। लखे जो चाहे अलख को, तिनहीं में लख लेह।।८२।।
The mirror of a saint is the body of saints. If you wish to see the Divine, recognize it within those saints.
अपने-अपने साख की, सब ही लीनी जान। हरि की बात दुरंतरा, पूरी न कहूँ पहचान।।९२।।
Everyone has their own reputation; all are aware of it. The words of the Divine are profound; I cannot fully describe them.
एक ते जान अनंत, अन्य एक होय आय। एक सों परचे भया, एक मांहि समाय।।९९।।
From the One comes the Infinite; the other forms come later. Understanding the One reveals everything, as all originates from the One.
कबीरा गरब न कीजिए, कबहूँ न हंसिये कोय। अजहूँ नाव समुद्र में, का जाने का होय।।१००।।
Kabir advises not to be proud or laugh at others. Even if the boat is in the ocean, one does not know what will happen next.
कबीरा संगति साधु की, जित प्रीत कीजै जाय। दुर्गति दूर वहावति, देवी सुमति बनाय।।१०२।।
Kabir says that by associating with saints and showing love, misfortune is removed and divine wisdom is attained.
कुटिल बचन सबसे बुरा, जासे होत न हार। साधु वचन जल रूप है, बरसे अम्रत धार।।१०८।।
Cunning words are the worst, as they lead to no resolution. The words of the saint are like water, showering the nectar of wisdom.
कबीरा सोता क्या करे, जागो जपो मुरार। एक दिना है सोवना, लांबे पाँव पसार।।११३।।
What is the use of sleeping, Kabir says? Wake up and chant the name of the Divine. Sleeping is for a single day, while the journey is long.
कबिरा मनहि गयन्द है, आकुंश दै-दै राखि। विष की बेली परि रहै, अम्रत को फल चाखि।।११४।।
The mind is intoxicated and keeps grasping at attachment. It remains entangled in the poisonous vine while it tastes the fruit of immortality.
कबिरा आप ठगाइए, और न ठगिए कोय। आप ठगे सुख होत है, और ठगे दुख होय।।११६।।
Kabir says, deceive yourself and not others. Deceiving yourself brings happiness, while deceiving others brings sorrow.
गाँठि न थामहिं बाँध ही, नहिं नारी सो नेह। कह कबीर वा साधु की, हम चरनन की खेह।।११८।।
One who does not hold onto the knot, does not have true affection. Kabir says, the wise are devoted to the feet of the Divine.
घी के तो दर्शन भले, खाना भला न तेल। दाना तो दुश्मन भला, मूरख का क्या मेल।।१२०।।
Seeing ghee (clarified butter) is good, but eating it is better than oil. Even a grain can be better than a foe; what is the use of being foolish?
जा पल दरसन साधु का, ता पल की बलिहारी। राम नाम रसना बसे, लीजै जनम सुधारि।।१२२।।
For a moment of seeing a saint, I am willing to sacrifice that moment. When the name of Ram resides on the tongue, it improves one's life.
तन को जोगी सब करे, मन को बिरला कोय। सहजै सब विधि पाइये, जो मन जोगी होय।।१२७।।
Many practice yoga for the body, but few do so for the mind. The true essence is easily attained if the mind is focused on yoga.
तब लग तारा जगमगे, जब लग उगे नसूर। तब लग जीव जग कर्मवश, जब लग ज्ञान ना पूर।।१२८।।
Stars continue to shine until dawn breaks. Similarly, life continues with its actions until knowledge is complete.
पोथी पढ़-पढ़ जग मुआ, पंडित भया न कोय। ढ़ाई आखर प्रेम का, पढ़ै सो पंड़ित होय।।१३०।।
The world has died reading books, no one has become a scholar. The true scholar is one who understands the two and a half letters of love.
संगति सों सुख्या ऊपजे, कुसंगति सो दुख होय। कह कबीर तहँ जाइये, साधु संग जहँ होय।।१४१।।
Good company brings happiness, bad company brings sorrow. Kabir says, go where there is the company of saints.
ज्ञान रतन का जतनकर, माटी का संसार। आय कबीर फिर गया, फीका है संसार।।१४५।।
Protect the jewel of wisdom, as the world is made of dust. Kabir says, once you come and go, the world seems pale.
कबीरा प्रेम न चषिया, चषि न लिया साव। सूने घर का पांहुणां, ज्यूं आया त्यूं जाव।।१५६।।
Kabir did not taste love, nor did he drink it. A guest in a deserted home comes and goes just as they arrived.
भारी कहौं तो बहुडरौं, हलका कहूं तौ झूठ। मैं का जाणी राम कूं, नैनूं कबहूं न दीठ।।१६३।।
If I say it is heavy, then it becomes burdensome; if I say it is light, it seems false. I do not know the essence of Ram; I have never seen Him.
पतिबरता मैली भली, गले कांच को पोत। सब सखियन में यों दिपै, ज्यों रवि ससि को जोत।।१६५।।
A devoted wife may be unclean, but if she applies glass (to adorn herself) around her neck, she shines among all friends, like the sun and moon's light.
चतुराई सूवै पढ़ी, सोइ पंजर मांहि। फिरि प्रमोधै आन कौं, आपण समझे नाहिं।।१६९।।
Cleverness is learned and is contained in the cage. Then it delights in others, but fails to understand itself.
हरि-रस पीया जाणिये, जे कबहुँ न जाइ खुमार। मैमता घूमत रहै, नाहि तन की सार।।१७१।।
One who drinks the nectar of Hari never experiences intoxication. The ego continues to roam, while the body remains worthless.
माया तजी तौ क्या भया, मानि तजि नही जाइ। मानि बड़े मुनियर मिले, मानि सबनि को खाइ।।१७८।।
What happens if one renounces illusion? The ego does not leave. Even if one meets great sages, the ego still consumes everyone.
करता दीसै कीरतन, ऊँचा करि करि तुंड। जाने-बूझै कुछ नहीं, यौं ही अंधा रुंड।।१७९।।
One may perform hymns loudly with raised hands, but if one does not understand or know, they are like a blind fool.
कबीर पढ़ियो दूरि करि, पुस्तक देइ बहाइ। बावन आषिर सोधि करि, ररै मर्मे चित्त लाइ।।१८०।।
Kabir read from afar, giving the book away. One who has studied the fifty-two verses finds true essence in the heart.
मैं जाण्यूँ पाढ़िबो भलो, पाढ़िबा थे भलो जोग। राम-नाम सूं प्रीती करि, भल भल नींयो लोग।।१८१।।
I know that reading scriptures is good, and so is performing rituals. But loving the name of Ram is the best, truly the highest good.
उज्जवल देखि न धीजिये, वग ज्यूं माडै ध्यान। धीर बौठि चपेटसी, यूँ ले बूडै ग्यान।।१८९।।
Do not be misled by brightness, like a moth attracted to light. Those who sit patiently and discern, will attain true knowledge.
पाणी हीतै पातला, धुवाँ ही तै झीण। पवनां बेगि उतावला, सो दोस्त कबीर कीन्ह।।१९८।।
Water is thin when it is beneficial, smoke is thin when it is hot. The fast-moving wind is a friend to Kabir.
आसा का ईंधण करूँ, मनसा करूँ बिभूति। जोगी फेरी फिल करूँ, यौं बिनना वो सूति।।१९९।।
I use hope as fuel and desire as wealth. A yogi wanders and seeks, yet without this, they remain asleep.
सरगुन की सेवा करो, निरगुन का करो ज्ञान। निरगुन सरगुन के परे, तहीं हमारा ध्यान।।२००।।
Serve the manifest form of God, and gain knowledge of the formless. Beyond the manifest and formless, our focus should be.
घन गरजै दामिनि दमकै, बूँदैं बरसैं झर लाग गए। हर तलाब में कमल खिले, तहाँ भानु परगट भये।।२०१।।
The clouds thunder, lightning flashes, and the rain pours down. Lotuses bloom in every pond, and the sun shines brightly there.
मैं मन्ता मन मारि रे, घट ही माहैं घेरि। जबहीं चालै पीठि दे, अंकुस दै-दै फेरि।।२०६।।
I discipline my mind and confine it within my own self. Whenever it goes astray, I control it with the stick of wisdom.
बिन रखवाले बाहिरा, चिड़िया खाया खेत। आधा-परधा ऊबरै, चेति सकै तो चैति।।२१०।।
Without a guard, the birds ate up the field. Some might be saved if one acts in time.
कैसो कहा बिगाड़िया, जो मुंडै सौ बार। मन को काहे न मूंडिये, जामे विषम-विकार।।२१८।।
What harm is there in shaving the head a hundred times? Why not shave the mind that is full of severe defects?
बैसनो भया तौ क्या भया, बूझा नहीं बबेक। छापा तिलक बनाइ करि, दगहया अनेक।।२२०।।
What is the use of being a Vaishnav if one does not understand wisdom? Wearing marks and tilak, they deceive many.
जिहिं धरि साध न पूजि, हरि की सेवा नाहिं। ते घर भड़धट सारषे, भूत बसै तिन माहिं।।२२८।।
The home where saints are not respected and Hari is not served, that house is like a cremation ground, inhabited by spirits.
कबीर सोई सूरिमा, मन सूँ मांडै झूझ। पंच पयादा पाड़ि ले, दूरि करै सब दूज।।२३३।।
Kabir says, the true warrior is the one who fights with his mind. He conquers the five senses and removes all duality.
कबीर घोड़ा प्रेम का, चेतनि चाढ़ि असवार। ग्यान खड़ग गहि काल सिरि, भली मचाई मार।।२३४।।
Kabir says, the horse of love is saddled with awareness. Holding the sword of knowledge, time strikes well.
आपा भेटियाँ हरि मिलै, हरि मेट् या सब जाइ। अकथ कहाणी प्रेम की, कह्या न कोउ पत्याइ।।२३७।।
When one meets the self, they find Hari, and all other desires vanish. The indescribable story of love, no one can truly understand.
कबीर मन मृतक भया, दुर्बल भया सरीर। तब पैंडे लागा हरि फिरै, कहत कबीर कबीर।।२३८।।
When Kabir's mind became lifeless and his body weakened, then Hari came to him again, Kabir says.
कबीर हरि कग नाव, सूँ प्रीति रहै इकवार। तौ मुख तैं मोती झड़ै, हीरे अन्त न पार।।२४३।।
Kabir says, if you have love for Hari with a single boat, pearls will fall from your mouth and diamonds will be found at the end.
कोई एक राखै सावधां, चेतनि पहरै जागि। बस्तर बासन सूँ खिसै, चोर न सकई लागि।।२४४।।
One who stays vigilant and aware, even if the clothes are worn out, the thief cannot get to them.
पदारथ पेलि करि, कंकर लीया हाथि। जोड़ी बिछटी हंस की, पड़या बगां के साथि।।२४५।।
Holding a pebble with the hand, and pairing it with a swan, was like getting along with the beggar.
सीतलता तब जाणियें, समिता रहै समाइ। पष छाँड़ै निरपष रहै, सबद न देष्या जाइ।।२४७।।
One should recognize coolness when tranquility is maintained. Without the touch of warmth, the words will not reach you.
हीरा परा बजार में, रहा छार लपिटाइ। ब तक मूरख चलि गये, पारखि लिया उठाइ।।२४९।।
The diamond remained covered in dust in the market. Only the discerning picked it up and recognized its value.
कुमति कीच चेला भरा, गुरु ज्ञान जल होय। जनम-जनम का मोरचा, पल में डारे धोय।।२५१।।
The disciple filled with ignorance is like dirt; the Guru's knowledge is like water. It washes away the burden of many lifetimes in an instant.
जो गुरु बसै बनारसी, सीष समुन्दर तीर। एक पलक बिसरे नहीं, जो गुण होय शरीर।।२५२।।
If the Guru resides in Varanasi, the disciple's head is like the shore of the ocean. He does not forget even for a moment the qualities of the Guru.
गुरु को सिर राखिये, चलिये आज्ञा माहिं। कहैं कबीर ता दास को, तीन लोक भय नहिं।।२५३।।
Keep the Guru's blessings on your head and follow his commands. Kabir says that the servant who does this is fearless in all three worlds.
गुरु बिन ज्ञान न उपजै, गुरु बिन मिलै न मोष। गुरु बिन लखै न सत्य को, गुरु बिन मिटे न दोष।।२५५।।
Without the Guru, knowledge does not arise; without the Guru, liberation is not attained. Without the Guru, truth is not realized, and without the Guru, faults are not removed.
सिष खांडा गुरु भसकला, चढ़ै शब्द खरसान। शब्द सहै सम्मुख रहै, निपजै शीष सुजान।।२५७।।
The disciple's knowledge is like a blade; when sharpened by the Guru's words, it remains sharp. A wise head is ever-present and well-attuned.
कोटिन चन्दा उगही, सूरज कोटि हज़ार। तीमिर तौ नाशै नहीं, बिन गुरु घोर अंधार।।२५९।।
Millions of moons and countless suns rise, but darkness does not dissipate. Without the Guru, there is profound darkness.
करै दूरि अज्ञानता, अंजन ज्ञान सुदेय। बलिहारी वे गुरुन की, हंस उबारि जुलेय।।२६३।।
Ignorance is dispelled through knowledge, and the darkness of ignorance is removed by wisdom. Blessed are those Gurus who save the soul from this ignorance.
साबुन बिचारा क्या करे, गाँठे राखे मोय। जल सो अरसां नहिं, क्यों कर ऊजल होय।।२६६।।
What can the innocent soap do, it only keeps the stains? Water cannot wash away the essence; how can it be cleansed?
सत्गुरु तो सतभाव है, जो अस भेद बताय। धन्य शीष धन भाग तिहि, जो ऐसी सुधि पाय।।२६७।।
The true Guru embodies the essence of truth, revealing the essence of the self. Blessed is the head and fortunate is the person who gains such awareness.
जग में युक्ति अनूप है, साधु संग गुरु ज्ञान। तामें निपट अनूप है, सतगुरु लागा कान।।२७१।।
In this world, the most unique method is the knowledge gained in the company of saints and true Guru. It is most unique when the true Guru's words reach the ears.
बिन सतगुरु उपदेश, सुर नर मुनि नहिं निस्तरे। ब्रह्मा-विष्णु, महेश और सकल जिव को गिनै।।२७२।।
Without the teachings of the true Guru, even gods, humans, and sages do not find salvation. This includes Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and all living beings.
जो गुरु ते भ्रम न मिटे, भ्रान्ति न जिसका जाय। सो गुरु झूठा जानिये, त्यागत देर न लाय।।२८१।।
If the Guru does not dispel delusion and does not remove doubts, know that Guru to be false and waste no time in leaving him.
सद्गुरु ऐसा कीजिये, लोभ मोह भ्रम नाहिं। दरिया सो न्यारा रहे, दीसे दरिया माहि।।२८२।।
Find a true Guru who is free from greed, attachment, and delusion. Such a Guru is like a river that remains distinct yet appears within the ocean.
यह तन विषय की बेलरी, गुरु अमृत की खान। सीस दिये जो गुरु मिलै, तो भी सस्ता जान।।२८९।।
This body is a vine of desires, but the Guru is a mine of nectar. Even if one has to give one's head to find the Guru, consider it a small price to pay.
कहता हूँ कहि जात हूँ, देता हूँ हेला। गुरु की करनी गुरु जाने, चेला की चेला।।२९१।।
I speak and go on speaking, without any hesitation. The Guru's deeds are known to him, and the disciple's to the disciple.
शिष्य पुजै आपना, गुरु पूजै सब साध। कहैं कबीर गुरु शीष को, मत है अगम अगाध।।२९२।।
The disciple worships his own ego, while the Guru worships all beings. Kabir says, the true Guru's wisdom is deep and unfathomable.
चौंसठ दीवा जोय के, चौदह चन्दा माहिं। तेहि घर किसका चाँदना, जिहि घर सतगुरु नाहिं।।२९७।।
Even if you light sixty-four lamps and fourteen moons in your house, what light will there be if the true Guru is not present?
पशुआ सों पालो परो, रहू-रहू हिया न खीज। ऊसर बीज न उगसी, बोवै दूना बीज।।२९९।।
Raise and nurture even animals, but do not lose patience. Seeds sown in barren land will not grow, even if you sow twice as much.
साकट का मुख बिम्ब है, निकसत बचन भुवंग। ताकि औषण मौन है, विष नहिं व्यापै अंग।।३००।।
The face of an ungodly person is like a fruit, but their words are like a serpent’s venom. The best ornament for them is silence, so the poison does not spread.
शुकदेव सरीखा फेरिया, तो को पावे पार। बिनु गुरु निगुरा जो रहे, पड़े चौरासी धार।।३०१।।
Even if someone as wise as Shukdev wanders around, they cannot cross over without a Guru. Without a Guru, one is bound to fall into the cycle of 84 lakh life forms.
साकट कहा न कहि चलै, सुनहा कहा न खाय। जो कौवा मठ हगि भरै, तो मठ को कहा नशाय।।३०२।।
The wicked person will not speak truthfully, and the wise will not consume what is impure. If a crow defiles a monastery, does that monastery lose its sanctity?
कबीर साकट की सभा, तू मति बैठे जाय। एक गुवाड़े कदि बड़ै, रोज गदहरा गाय।।३०४।।
Kabir says, do not sit in the company of wicked people. Even if you join them for a moment, their negative influence will grow daily.
संगत सोई बिगुर्चई, जो है साकट साथ। कंचन कटोरा छाड़ि के, सनहक लीन्ही हाथ।।३०५।।
The company that associates with wickedness will be ruined. It is like leaving a golden bowl to hold a piece of coal.
टेक न कीजै बावरे, टेक माहि है हानि। टेक छाड़ि मानिक मिलै, सत गुरु वचन प्रमानि।।३०७।।
Do not be stubborn, O fool, as stubbornness leads to loss. Abandon it, and you will find gems; this is the true Guru’s teaching.
आँखों देखा घी भला, न मुख मेला तेल। साघु सो झगड़ा भला, ना साकट सों मेल।।३१२।।
Seeing clarified butter with your eyes is good, but if your mouth is oily, it is not useful. It is better to have a dispute with a saint than to have a friendship with a wicked person.
साधु बिरछ सतज्ञान फल, शीतल शब्द विचार। जग में होते साधु नहिं, जर भरता संसार।।३१९।।
The saint is like a tree bearing the fruit of true knowledge, offering cool and soothing words. Without saints in the world, the world remains filled with ignorance.
साधु सिद्ध बहु अन्तरा, साधु मता परचण्ड। सिद्ध जु वारे आपको, साधु तारि नौ खण्ड।।३२८।।
Saints are often great, their knowledge profound. Saints are the masters of wisdom; they can guide one through the nine regions of existence.
आशा वासा सन्त का, ब्रह्मा लखै न वेद। षट दर्शन खटपट करै, बिरला पावै भेद।।३२९।।
The hope and shelter of saints are not recognized by Brahma or the Vedas. Those who engage in debates on the six philosophies rarely understand the truth.
वेद थके ब्रह्मा थके, याके सेस महेस। गीता हूँ कि गत नहीं, सन्त किया परवेस।।३३०।।
The Vedas are exhausted, Brahma is tired, and Shiva is also worn out. The Gita is still incomplete, but the saints' teachings are complete.
साधु चाल जु चालई, साधु की चाल। बिन साधन तो सुधि नाहिं, साधु कहाँ ते होय।।३३५।।
The way of a saint is his own way. Without proper means, there is no understanding; how can one be called a saint?
साधु-साधु सब एक है, जस अफीम का खेत। कोई विवेकी लाल है, और सेत का सेत।।३३७।।
The wise are all the same, like the field of opium. Some are red as a precious stone, and others are simply common.
साधू-साधू सबहीं बड़े, अपनी-अपनी ठौर। शब्द विवेकी पारखी, ते माथे के मौर।।३३८।।
All saints are great, each in their own place. The discerning word is like a crown on their head.
सदा रहे सन्तोष में, धरम आप दृढ़ धार। आश एक गुरुदेव की, और चित्त विचार।।३३९।।
Always remain in contentment, with steadfast adherence to righteousness. Hope lies in the guru, and the mind should be focused on contemplation.
सदा कृपालु दु:ख परिहरन, बैर भाव नहिं दोय। छिमा ज्ञान सत भाखही, सिंह रहित तु होय।।३४०।।
Always compassionate and removing sorrows, free from feelings of enmity. Forgiveness and wisdom are his speech, without pride like a lion.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, जाके ज्ञान विवेक। बाहर मिलते सों मिलें, अन्तर सबसों एक।।३४१।।
A saint should be one who possesses knowledge and discernment. Though he may meet others externally, internally he is the same as all.
एक छाड़ि पय को गहैं, ज्यों रे गऊ का बच्छ। अवगुण छाड़ै गुण गहै, ऐसा साधु लच्छ।।३४४।।
Leaving one thing, he holds onto another, like a calf holding onto its mother's milk. A saint renounces faults and embraces virtues.
तन में शीतल शब्द है, बोले वचन रसाल। कहैं कबीर ता साधु को, गंजि सकै न काल।।३४५।।
Within the body, there are soothing words and the speech is pleasant. Kabir says, such a saint cannot be touched by time.
संगत कीजै साधु की, कभी न निष्फल होय। लोहा पारस परस ते, सो भी कंचन होय।।३५१।।
Association with saints is never futile. Just as iron turns to gold when touched by the philosopher's stone.
सो दिन गया इकारथे, संगत भई न सन्त। ज्ञान बिना पशु जीवना, भक्ति बिना भटकन्त।।३५४।।
Those days are gone when association with saints was common. Without knowledge, life is like that of an animal, and without devotion, one is lost.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, जहाँ रहै तहँ गैब। बानी के बिस्तार में, ताकूँ कोटिक ऐब।।३५७।।
A saint should be one whose presence is hidden, and whose speech covers countless faults.
शब्द विचारे पथ चलै, ज्ञान गली दे पाँव। क्या रमता क्या बैठता, क्या गृह कंदला छाँव।।३६५।।
One who ponders over words walks the path of knowledge, but whether they wander or sit, whether they are in the home or under a canopy, is inconsequential.
भेष देख मत भूलिये, बूझि लीजिये ज्ञान। बिना कसौटी होत नहीं, कंचन की पहिचान।।३७०।।
Do not be deceived by outward appearance; seek the inner knowledge. True gold is identified only through a proper test.
कबीरा संगत साधु की, नित प्रति कीर्ज जाय। दुरमति दूर बहावसी, देशी सुमति बताय।।३७८।।
Constant association with saints drives away evil thoughts and brings wisdom and good understanding.
साध संग अन्तर पड़े, यह मति कबहु न होय। कहैं कबीर तिहु लोक में, सुखी न देखा कोय।।३८२।।
When there is a gap in the company of saints, this intellect is never right. Kabir says, I have not seen anyone truly happy in all three worlds.
काचा सेती मति मिलै, पाका सेती बान। काचा सेती मिलत ही, है तन धन की हान।।३८५।।
One gains intellect with raw (imperfect) means and skill with mature (perfect) methods. Associating with raw means results in loss of body and wealth.
कोयला भी हो ऊजला, जरि बरि है जो सेव। मूरख होय न ऊजला, ज्यों कालर का खेत।।३८६।।
Even coal can become bright if it is burned in the fire. But a fool remains dark, like a field of black soil.
मूरख को समुझावते, ज्ञान गाँठि का जाय। कोयला होय न ऊजला, सौ मन साबुन लाय।।३८७।।
Explaining to a fool is like trying to remove the dirt from coal; no matter how much soap you use, it won't become clean.
साखी शब्द बहुतक सुना, मिटा न मन क मोह। पारस तक पहुँचा नहीं, रहा लोह का लोह।।३८८।।
One may hear many words of wisdom, but if the mind's attachment is not removed, it is like iron that has not reached the touchstone; it remains as iron.
कबीर विषधर बहु मिले, मणिधर मिला न कोय। विषधर को मणिधर मिले, विष तजि अमृत होय।।३९४।।
Many poisonous creatures are encountered, but not a single gem-holder. If a poisonous snake meets a gem-holder, its poison turns to nectar.
सज्जन सों सज्जन मिले, होवे दो दो बात। गहदा सो गहदा मिले, खावे दो दो लात।।३९५।।
When good people meet, there are two good conversations. But when fools meet, they exchange two blows.
मैं सोचों हित जानिके, कठिन भयो है काठ। ओछी संगत नीच की, सरि पर पाड़ी बाट।।३९७।।
I realize that the wood is hard; the path becomes difficult when one takes the lowly company, like a river that has lost its course.
लकड़ी जल डूबै नहीं, कहो कहाँ की प्रीति। अपनी सीची जानि के, यही बड़ने की रीति।।३९८।।
Wood cannot be submerged in water; tell me where is the love? Knowing one's own nature, this is the way to grow.
साधू संगत परिहरै, करै विषय का संग। कूप खनी जल बावरे, त्याग दिया जल गंग।।३९९।।
One who leaves the company of saints and indulges in worldly pleasures is like someone who forsakes the Ganges for the water of a pit.
संगति ऐसी कीजिये, सरसा नर सो संग। लर-लर लोई हेत है, तऊ न छौड़ रंग।।४००।।
Associate with such people whose company is like the syrupy nectar; even if they have flaws, do not abandon their company.
अनराते सुख सोवना, राते नींद न आय। यों जल छूटी माछरी, तलफत रैन बिहाय।।४०५।।
One who sleeps in comfort during the day does not find sleep at night. Just as a fish out of water suffers, the restless person suffers throughout the night.
दया और धरम का ध्वजा, धीरजवान प्रमान। सन्तोषी सुख दायका, सेवक परम सुजान।।४०९।।
The flag of compassion and righteousness is flown by the patient. The contented and wise servant is the giver of happiness.
भक्ति बीज पलटै नहीं, जो जुग जाय अनन्त। ऊँच-नीच धर अवतरै, होय सन्त का अन्त।।४१०।।
The seed of devotion does not change even as ages pass endlessly. It manifests regardless of high or low status, until it reaches the saintly end.
पेटे में भक्ति करै, ताका नाम सपूत। मायाधारी मसखरैं, लेते गये अऊत।।४१४।।
One who practices devotion from the heart is called a true son. Those who are engrossed in materialism act foolishly and face downfall.
ज्ञान सपूरण न भिदा, हिरदा नाहिं जुड़ाय। देखा देखी भक्ति का, रंग नहीं ठहराय।।४१६।।
Knowledge is not complete without penetrating the heart. Imitative devotion does not last; it fades away.
भक्ति भक्ति सब कोइ कहै, भक्ति न जाने मेव। पूरण भक्ति जब मिलै, कृपा करे गुरुदेव।।४२०।।
Everyone talks about devotion, but few truly understand its essence. Complete devotion is attained only through the grace of the Guru.
कबीर सपनें रैन के, ऊधरी आये नैन। जीव परा बहू लूट में, जागूँ लेन न देन।।४२१।।
Kabir says, in the dream of night, illusions come before the eyes. The soul is caught in worldly plunder, unaware of giving or taking.
सातों शब्द जु बाजते, घर-घर होते राग। ते मन्दिर खाले पड़े, बैठने लागे काग।।४२४।।
The seven notes play everywhere, filling homes with music. But the temples lie empty, where only crows sit now.
कहा चुनावै मेड़िया, लम्बी भीत उसारि। घर तो साढ़े तीन हाथ, घना तो पौने चारि।।४२८।।
Where is the choice of the media? The high walls are narrow. The house is only three and a half hands, and the courtyard is barely four.
जिन घर नौबत बाजती, होत छतीसों राग। सो घर भी खाली पड़े, बैठने लागे काग।।४३५।।
In the houses where the drum is played, there are thirty-six tunes. Even such houses remain empty, and crows sit there.
समुझाये समुझे नहीं, धरे बहुत अभिमान। गुरु का शब्द उछेद है, कहत सकल हम जान।।४३७।।
One who is taught does not understand, holding much pride. The words of the Guru are an antidote; we all know this.
ज्ञानी होय सो मानही, बूझै शब्द हमार। कहैं कबीर सो बाँचि है, और सकल जमधार।।४३९।।
The wise accept and understand our words. Kabir says that he is beyond the entire cycle of birth and death.
गाँठि होय सो हाथ कर, हाथ होय सी देह। आगे हाट न बानिया, लेना होय सो लेह।।४४९।।
What is tied in a knot is handled by the hand; the hand is the body. The market does not wait; take what you need.
सह ही में सत बाटई, रोटी में ते टूक। कहैं कबीर ता दास को, कबहुँ न आवे चूक।।४५१।।
The truth lies in the presence of good company, not just a piece of bread. Kabir says to the servant, never let the mistake happen.
कहते तो कहि जान दे, गुरु की सीख तु लेय। साकट जन औ श्वान को, फेरि जवाब न देय।।४५२।।
If they say, say you know; take the Guru's teaching. Don’t reply to the hypocrites and dogs again.
विषय वासना उरझि कर, जनम गंवाया बाद। अब पछितावा क्या करै, निज करनी कर याद।।४५३।।
Involved in sensual desires, life has been wasted. Now what is the use of regret? Remember your own actions.
ज्ञानी भूले ज्ञान कथि, निकट रहा निज रूप। बाहिर खोजै बापुरै, भीतर वस्तु अनूप।।४६२।।
The wise forget the essence of knowledge, remaining close to their own nature. They search outside, while the essence is within.
गुरु नारायन रूप है, गुरु ज्ञान को घाट। सतगुरु बचन प्रताप सों, मन के मिटे उचाट।।४६८।।
The Guru is the form of Narayan (God) and the source of knowledge. By the glory of the true Guru's words, the mind's dissatisfaction is removed.
गुरु समान दाता नहीं, याचक शिष्य समान। तीन लोक की संपदा, सो गुरु दीन्हीं दान।।४७०।।
There is no giver like the Guru, and no seeker like the disciple. The wealth of the three worlds is given as a gift by the Guru.
गुरु पारस को अन्तरो, जानत हैं सब संंत। वह लोहा कंचन करे, ये करि लेय महंत।।४७२।।
The Guru is like a philosopher's stone, known by all saints. He turns iron into gold, and the wise take his essence.
गुरु सों ज्ञान जो लीजिए, सीस दीजिए दान। बहुतक भोंदू बहि गये, राखि जीव अभिमान।।४८३।।
When receiving knowledge from the Guru, offer your head as a donation. Many have gone astray due to pride, so protect the soul by offering humility.
जल परमानै माछली, कुल परमानै सुद्धि। जाको जैसा गुरु मिला, ताको तैसी बुद्धि।।४८५।।
Just as fish live in water and are sustained by it, purity is upheld by the essence of the family lineage. The intelligence of a person reflects the nature of the Guru they have found.
पंडित पढि़ गुनि पचि मुये, गुरु बिन मिले न ज्ञान। ज्ञान बिना नहिं मुक्ति है, सत्त सब्द परमान।।४८७।।
The learned scholar may read and know many scriptures, but without the Guru, true knowledge is unattainable. Without knowledge, liberation is not possible; truth is beyond mere words.
ज्ञान समागम प्रेम सुख, दया भक्ति विश्वास। गुरु सेवा ते पाइये, सद्गुरु चरण निवास।।४८९।।
Knowledge, love, happiness, compassion, devotion, and trust come together. Through the service of the Guru, one attains the dwelling in the feet of the True Guru.
मूल ध्यान गुरु रूप है, मूल पूजा गुरु पांव। मूल नाम गुरु वचन है, मूल सत्य सतभाव।।४९०।।
The root of meditation is the form of the Guru; the root of worship is the Guru's feet. The root of the name is the Guru’s word, and the root of truth is the essence of the Guru’s teachings.
सब धरती कागद करुं, लेखनी सब बनराय। सात समुद्र की मसि करुं, गुरु गुण लिखा न जाय।।४९१।।
If the entire earth were paper, and all the trees were pens, and if the seven seas were ink, still the virtues of the Guru could not be written.
गुरु को सिर पर राखिये, चलिये आज्ञा माहिं। कहैं कबीर ता दास को, तीन लोक भय नाहिं।।४९४।।
Keep the Guru on your head (or respect the Guru), and follow His commands. Says Kabir, the servant of the Guru, there is no fear in the three worlds.
चित चोखा मन निरमला, बुधि उत्तम मति धीर। सो धोखा नहिं बिरहहीं, सतगुरु मिले कबीर।।५००।।
A pure mind and a clear intellect are free from deception. Meeting the True Guru ensures this purity and wisdom.
सतगुरु मेरा शूरमा, तकि तकि मारै तीर। लागे पन भागे नही, ऐसा दास कबीर।।५०१।।
The True Guru is a great warrior who shoots arrows of wisdom. They protect from harm and their protection is unfailing.
सतगुरु महिमा अनंत है, अनंत किया उपकार। लोचन अनंत उघारिया, अनंत दिखावन हार।।५०२।।
The glory of the True Guru is infinite, and their benevolence is boundless. The eyes reveal infinite truths and their manifestations are endless.
कबीर समुझा कहत है, पानी थाह बताय। ताकूं सतगुरु को करे, जो औघट डूबे जाय।।५०५।।
Kabir explains that one should seek the true Guru who can reveal the depth of the water, as without the Guru, even the skilled swimmer will drown.
सतगुरु सम कोई नहीं, सात दीप नौ खण्ड। तीन लोक न पाइये, अरु इक-इस ब्रह्मण्ड।।५०६।।
There is no comparison to the true Guru, who is like seven lamps in nine realms. One cannot find the Guru even in the three worlds or this entire universe.
केते पढि गुनि पचि मुए, योग यज्ञ तप लाय। बिन सतगुरु पावै नहीं, कोटिन करे उपय।।५०८।।
Many have studied and practiced various disciplines, including yoga, rituals, and penance. However, without the true Guru, none of these efforts bear fruit.
सतगुरु तो सतभाव है, जो अस भेद बताय। धन्य शीष धन भाग तिहिं, जो ऐसी सुधि पाया।।५०९।।
The true Guru is the essence of truth, revealing the secrets of this reality. Blessed are those who attain such knowledge and recognition.
पाछे लागे जाय था, लोक वेद के साथ। पैडे में सतगुरु मिले, दीपक दीन्हा हाथ।।५११।।
One may follow the worldly scriptures, but in the presence of the true Guru, they find the lamp of enlightenment in their hands.
गुरु किया है देह का, सतगुरु चीन्हा नांहि। भवसागर के जाल में, फिर फिर गोता खांहि।।५१६।।
If you consider the body as your Guru and do not recognize the true Guru, you will keep drowning again and again in the ocean of existence.
गुरु बिचारा क्या करै, शब्द न लागै अंग। कहै कबीर मैली गजी, कैसे लागै रंग।।५१७।।
What can the poor Guru do if his words do not take root? Kabir says, how can a dirty cloth take color?
गु अंधियारी जानिये, रु कहिये परकास। मिटे अज्ञान तम ज्ञान ते, गुरु नाम है तास।।५१८।।
Ignorance is darkness, knowledge is light. The removal of ignorance through knowledge is achieved through the name of the Guru.
जानीता बूझा नहीं, बूझि किया नहिं गौन। अंधे को अंधा मिले, राह बताये कौन।।५२०।।
Knowing without understanding, and understanding without practice is futile. When the blind lead the blind, who can show the way?
झूठे गुरु के पक्ष को, तजज न कीजै बार। द्वार न पावै शब्द का, भटके बारम्बार।।५२५।।
Do not support the false guru repeatedly. One who wanders repeatedly does not find the door of true knowledge.
सांचे गुरु के पक्ष में, मन को दे ठहराय। चंचल से निश्चल भया, नहिं आवै नहिं जाय।।५२७।।
In the presence of a true guru, calm the restless mind. When made still, it neither comes nor goes.
पूरा सतगुरु न मिला, सुनी अधूरी सीख। स्वांग यती का पहिन के, घर-घर मांगी भीख।।५२९।।
Without finding a complete true guru, one hears incomplete teachings. Wearing the disguise of a monk, begs for alms from door to door.
गुरु कीजै जानि के, पानी पीजै छानि। बिना बिचारे गुरु करे, परै चौरासी खानि।।५३१।।
Know the guru and drink filtered water. Without consideration, the guru acts, leading to eighty-four reincarnations.
शिष्य पूजै गुरु आपना, गुरु पूजे सब साध। कहैं कबीर गुरु शीष को, मत है अगम अगाध।।५३७।।
The disciple worships his own guru, and the guru is worshipped by all saints. Says Kabir, the guru is beyond comprehension and profound.
हिरदे ज्ञान न उपजे, मन परतीत न होय। ताको सदगुरु कहा करे, घनघसि कुल्हर न होय।।५४०।।
When wisdom doesn't arise in the heart and the mind lacks faith, even a true Guru can't help, just as a blunt axe can't cut.
कबीर हृदय कठोर के, शब्द न लागै सार। सुधि बुधि के हिरदे विधे, उपजे ज्ञान विचार।।५४४।।
Kabir says, the wise words do not penetrate a hard heart. But in a thoughtful heart, wisdom and reflection grow.
हरिया जानै रुखड़ा, उस पानी का नेह। सूखा काठ न जानि है, कितहूं बूड़ा मेह।।५४५।।
A green tree understands the love of water, but a dry log does not, no matter how much it rains.
कबीर लहरि समुद्र की, मोती बिखरे आय। बगुला परख न जानई, हंसा चुनि-चुनि खाय।।५४६।।
Kabir says, pearls scatter on the waves of the ocean, but only the swan knows how to pick them, while the crane remains unaware.
पशुवा सों पालौ पर्यो, रहु रहु हिया न खीज। ऊषर बीज न ऊगसी, बोवै दूना बीज।।५४८।।
Kabir says, do not lose heart if you find yourself among ignorant beings. Just as seeds will not sprout on barren land, no matter how many you sow.
साकट का मुख बिंब है, निकसत बचन भुवंग। ताकी औषधि मौन है, विष नहिं व्यापै अंग।।५४९।।
The face of the wicked is like a snake, whose words are poisonous. The remedy for such a person is silence, as poison does not spread if the body is not exposed to it.
गुरु बिन माला फेरते, गुरु बिन देते दान। गुरु बिन सब निष्फल गया, पूछौ वेद पुरान।।५५४।।
Without a guru, one only spins the beads and makes offerings. Without a guru, everything is futile; ask the Vedas and Puranas.
सूता साधु जगाइये, करै ब्रह्म को जाप। ये तीनों न जगाइये, साकट सिंह अरु सांप।।५५५।।
Wake up the sleeping saint and make him chant the name of Brahma. But do not wake up these three: the miser, the lion, and the snake.
तीरथ न्हाये एक फल, साधु मिले फल चार। सतगुरु मिले अनेक फल, कहैं कबीर विचार।।५६०।।
A pilgrimage yields one fruit, meeting a saint yields four fruits. Meeting the true guru yields many fruits, says Kabir.
कबीर दर्शन साधु के, करत न कीजै कानि। ज्यों उद्यम से लक्ष्मी, आलस मन से हानि।।५६१।।
Do not be lazy in visiting saints. Just as effort brings wealth, laziness brings loss.
तीजे चौथे नहिं करे, बार-बार करु जाय। यामें विलंब न कीजिये, कहैं कबीर समुझाय।।५६७।।
If you do not do it on the third or fourth day, then do it repeatedly. Do not delay in this; Kabir advises to understand this.
साधु शब्द समुद्र है, जामें रतन भराय। मन्द भाग मुट्ठी भरै, कंकर हाथ लगाय।।५७२।।
The words of the saint are like an ocean filled with jewels. A fortunate person may receive a handful of those jewels, while the unfortunate may only touch pebbles.
कंचन दीया करन ने, द्रौपदी दीया चीर। जो दीया सो पाइया, ऐसे कहैं कबीर।।५७५।।
Gold can be used to create a lamp, and the lamp can be used to tear Draupadi's cloth. The one who understands this truth is a true follower, says Kabir.
मानपमान न चित्त धरै, औरत को सनमान। जो कोई आशा करै, उपदेशै तेहि ज्ञान।।५८०।।
One should not be attached to social status or honor, but should instead respect and honor others. Those who seek knowledge will find it through teachings.
कोई आवै भाव लै, कोई अभाव ले आव। साधु दाऊ को पोषते, भाव न गिनै अभाव।।५८९।।
Some come with their own emotions, some come with needs. The saint nourishes them all, not counting their emotions or deficiencies.
साधु साधु सब बड़े हैं, जस पस्ते का खेत। कोई विवेकी लाल हैं, और सेत का सेत।।५९९।।
All saints are great, like fields of crops. Some are wise and pure, and some are full of virtues.
सन्त मता गजराज का, चाले बन्धन छोड़। जग कुत्ता पीछै फिरै, सुनै न वाका सोर।।६००।।
A saint is like a wise elephant, who leaves the bonds of worldly attachments. The world chases after false things and does not hear the true call.
कमल पत्र हैं साधु जन, बसै जगत के माहिं। बालक केरि धाय ज्यों, अपना जानत नाहिं।।६०४।।
Saints are like lotus petals in the world, unaware of their own greatness, like a child who does not know its own value.
साधु दरश को जाइये, जेता धरिये पांव। डग डग पै असमेध जग, कहैं कबीर समुझाय।।६०६।।
Visit the saint wherever you can; keep your feet in the path of devotion. Kabir explains, by every step in devotion, you understand the world.
बंधा पानी निरमला, जो टूक गहिरा होय। साधु जन बैठा भला, जो कुछ साधन होय।।६१७।।
Water that is bound is pure if it is deep. Similarly, a saint is noble if he has the means to aid others.
जाति न पूछो साधु की, पूछि लीजिये ज्ञान। मोल करो तलवार का, पड़ा रहन दो म्यान।।६२१।।
Do not inquire about the caste of a saint, but ask about their knowledge. The value of the sword should be assessed, not the scabbard.
साधु चाल जु चलाई, साधु कहावै सोय। बिन साधन तो सुधि नहीं, साधु कहां ते होय।।६२५।।
One who follows the saintly path is truly a saint. Without the means, there is no wisdom; thus, a saint cannot exist without them.
सब वन तो चन्दन नहीं, शूरा के दल नाहिं। सब समुद्र मोती नहीं, यों साधु जग माहिं।।६२८।।
Not all forests contain sandalwood, and not all groups are brave. Not all seas contain pearls, and similarly, not all are saints in the world.
साधु साधु सबहीं बड़े, अपनी अपनी ठौर। शब्द विवेकी पारखी, सो माथे के मौर।।६२९।।
All saints are great in their own right. The wise and discerning are those who understand the value of words, like the crest on the forehead.
गिरही सेवै साधु को, भाव भक्ति आनंद। कहैं कबीर बैरागी को, निरबानी निरदुन्द।।६३५।।
A householder who serves the saint with devotion and joy is truly blessed. Kabir says that the renunciant who is indifferent is devoid of wisdom.
कवि तो कोटिक कोटि हैं, सिर के मूड़े कोट। मन के मूड़े देखि करि, ता संग लीजै ओट।।६३७।।
There are countless poets with countless heads. Examine the depth of the mind; find solace in those who have profound wisdom.
तन को जोगी सब करै, मन को करैं न कोय। सहजै सब सिधि पाइये, जो मन जोगी होय।।६३८।।
Everyone can practice physical asceticism, but no one practices mental discipline. The true achievement is attained effortlessly by those who discipline the mind.
शब्द बिचारे पथ चलै, ज्ञान गली दे पांव। क्या रमता क्या बैठता, क्या गृह कंदला छांव।।६४१।।
Words wander on the path, and wisdom gives direction. Whether one wanders, sits, or remains in a humble abode, wisdom guides all.
कबीर गुरु के देश में, बसि जानै जो कोय। कागा ते हंसा बने, जाति बरन कुल खोय।।६५२।।
Kabir says that one who lives in the land of the guru and knows it is like a crow that has become a swan, losing caste, color, and lineage.
जा घर गुरु की भक्ति नहीं, संत नहीं मिहमान। ता घर जम डेरा दिया, जीवत भये मसान।।६५४।।
In a home where there is no devotion to the guru and no saintly guest, the house becomes a dwelling place for death, and life becomes a graveyard.
गिरिये परबत सिखर ते, परिये धरनि मंझार। मूरख मित्र न कीजिये, बूड़ो काली धार।।६५५।।
Even if you fall from the peak of a mountain or the middle of the earth, do not befriend a foolish person; you will be lost in the dark current.
साधु संगत परिहरै, करै विषय को संग। कूप खनी जल बावरे, त्याग दिया जल गंग।।६५८।।
The company of saints abandons the association with worldly desires. They forsake the well of water and embrace the Ganges river.
चर्चा करु तब चौहटे, ज्ञान करो तब दोय। ध्यान धरो तब एकिला, और न दूजा कोय।।६५९।।
Discuss in the marketplace, gain knowledge in pairs. Meditate alone; do not involve anyone else.
कबीर कलह अरु कल्पना, सत्संगति से जाय। दुख वासो भागा फिरै, सुख में रहै समाय।।६६१।।
Quarrels and imagination vanish with the company of the wise. Sorrow flees away, and happiness remains.
ज्ञानी को ज्ञानी मिलै, रस की लूटम लूट। ज्ञानी अज्ञानी मिलै, हौवे माथा कूट।।६६४।।
When a wise person meets another wise person, they revel in joy. But when a wise person meets an ignorant one, it leads to frustration.
कबीर संगत साधु की, नित प्रति कीजै जाय। दुरमति दूर बहावसी, देसी सुमति बताय।।६६५।।
Kabir advises to engage in the company of saints regularly. This will dispel evil thoughts and bring wisdom.
कबीर संगत साधु की, जौ भी भूसी खाय। खीर खांड भोजन मिले, साकट संग न जाय।।६६६।।
Kabir suggests that even if one eats simple food in the company of saints, it's better than indulging in rich food in bad company.
शीलवन्त सुर ज्ञान मत, अति उदार चित्त होय। लज्जावान अति निछलता, कोमल हिरदा सोय।।६६९।।
A person of good character possesses deep knowledge, a generous heart, humility, and a pure, gentle nature.
विंतदय धरमक ध्वजा, धीरजवान प्रमान। सन्तोषी सुख दायका, सेवक परम सुजान।।६७१।।
The flag of righteousness is held by the patient; contentment brings joy, and a wise servant is truly skilled.
गुरु आज्ञा ले आवही, गुरु आज्ञा ले जाय। कहैं कबीर सो सन्त प्रिय, बहु विधि अमृत पाय।।६७८।।
Kabir says, a saint who follows the Guru's command in every action is dear and attains the nectar of divine knowledge.
ज्ञानी अभिमानी नहीं, सब काहु सो हेत। सत्यवान परमाथी, आदर भाव सहेत।।६८१।।
A wise person is not proud; they are devoted to the welfare of all. The truthful are supreme, embracing respect and humility.
लगा रहै सतज्ञान सो, सबही बन्धन तोड़। कहैं कबीर वा दास सो, काल रहै हथ जोड़।।६८६।।
One who is absorbed in true knowledge breaks all bonds. Kabir says, such a person is a true servant and remains safe from the clutches of time.
कबीर गुरु कै भावते, दूरहि ते दीसन्त। तन छीना मन अनमना, जग के खठि फिरन्त।।६९०।।
Kabir says, the Guru’s essence is visible even from afar. The body is worn out, the mind is restless, while the world remains ignorant.
निर्पक्षी की भक्ति है, निर्मोही को ज्ञान। निरद्वंदी की मुक्ति है, निर्लोभी निर्बान।।६९८।।
Devotion of the impartial brings knowledge; the knowledge of the detached leads to liberation. The free from conflict attain final peace.
तिमिर गया रवि देखते, कुमति गयी गुरु ज्ञान। सुमति गयी अति लोभते, भक्ति गयी अभिमान।।७००।।
When darkness departs, the sun is visible; similarly, ignorance leaves with the knowledge of the guru. Goodness fades with excessive greed, and devotion is lost with pride.
विषय त्याग बैराग है, समता कहिये ज्ञान। सुखदायी सब जीव सों, यही भक्ति परमान।।७०६।।
Renunciation of desires is asceticism; equanimity is knowledge. True devotion is that which brings happiness to all beings.
भक्ति जु सीढ़ी मुक्ति की, चढ़े भक्त हरषाय। और न कोई चढि सकै, निज मन समझो आय।।७१७।।
Devotion is the ladder to liberation, and the devotee climbs it with joy. No other can climb this ladder; understand this in your own mind.
कहता हूं कहि जात हूं, कहूं बजाये ढोल। श्वासा खाली जात है, तीन लोक का मोल।।७२८।।
I speak and proclaim, but all is just noise. The breath is fleeting, and the value of the three worlds is worthless.
जो कोय सुमिरन अंग को, निशिवासर करै पाठ। कहैं कबीर सो संत जन, सन्धै औघट घाट।।७३६।।
Whoever constantly remembers the limbs of the body and practices daily, Kabir says that such a person is a true saint, transcending all doubts and dilemmas.
नाम रतन धन पाय के, गांठी बांध न खोल। नहिं पाटनहिं पार भी, नहिं गाहक नहिं मोल।।७३९।।
The name is a precious jewel, but once it is obtained, it cannot be bound or sold. It cannot be used for trading or profit.
नाम जपत दरिद्री भला, टूटी घर की छान। कंचन मन्दिर जारि दे, जहां न सतगुरु ज्ञान।।७४२।।
Chanting the name is better for the poor than a broken roofed house. Gold temples are of no use where there is no knowledge of the true Guru.
नाम लिया जिन सब लिया, सब सास्त्रन को भेद। बिना नाम नरके गये, पढ़ि गुनि चारों वेद।।७४४।।
Those who have taken the name have understood all the scriptures' secrets. Without the name, even those learned in the Vedas go to hell.
जो कोय सुमिरन अंग को, पाठ करै मन लाय। भक्ति ज्ञान मन ऊपजै, कहैं कबीर समुझाय।।७४६।।
One who remembers the limbs of the body and recites with a focused mind, will develop devotion and knowledge, says Kabir.
कोटि नाम संसार में, ताते मुक्ति न होय। आदि नाम जो गुप्त जप, बिरला जाने कोय।।७४९।।
In the world, countless names are uttered, but liberation is not achieved through them. Only the hidden and ancient name that is secretly recited is known to very few.
नीद निशानी मौत की, उठ कबीरा जाग। और रसायन छांडिके, राम रसायन लाग।।७५२।।
Sleep is a sign of death; wake up, Kabir, and be aware. Abandon other medicines and embrace the medicine of Rama's name.
सोया सो निष्फल गया, जागा सो फल लेहि। साहिब हक्क न राखसी, जब मांग तब देहि।।७५३।।
The one who remains asleep is fruitless; the one who wakes up receives the fruit. The Lord will not withhold what is rightfully yours; He will give it when asked.
सुमिरन सों मन जब लगै, ज्ञानाकुस दे सीस। कहैं कबीर डोलै नहीं, निश्चै बिस्वा बीस।।७६२।।
When the mind is engaged in remembrance, it wears the crown of wisdom. Kabir says, it does not waver; it certainly remains steadfast.
सुख के माथे शिल परै, नाम हृदय से जाय। बलिहारी वा दुख की, पल पल नाम रटाय।।७६३।।
Happiness is inscribed on the forehead, but the name reaches the heart. I am devoted to the sorrow that keeps repeating the name every moment.
कबीर सूता क्या करै, गुण सतगुरु का गाय। तेरे शिर पर जम खड़ा, खरच कदे का खाय।।७६४।।
What does a sleeping person achieve? Sing the virtues of the true Guru. Yama (Death) stands on your head, what will you spend on?
ज्ञान दीप परकाश करि, भीतर भवन जराय। तहां सुमिर गुरु नाम को, सहज समाधि लगाय।।७६७।।
The lamp of knowledge illuminates and burns the inner abode. There, remember the Guru's name and attain natural meditation.
राम जपत कुष्टी भला, चुइ चुइ पैर जु चाम। कंचन देह किस काम की, जो मुख नाहिं राम।।७७५।।
Chanting Ram is good even if it is done while wearing a thread. What use is a golden body if it does not speak of Ram?
ज्ञान कथे बकि बकि मरै, काहे करै उपाय। सतगुरु ने तो या कहा, सुमिरन करो बनाय।।७७९।।
Knowledge discussed and discussed dies in vain, what is the use of remedies? The true Guru has said, make remembrance your practice.
कबीर हरि के नाम में, सुरति रहै करतार। ता मुख से मोती झरे, हीरा अनंत अपार।।७९०।।
Kabir says, in the name of Hari, the consciousness remains on the Creator. From that mouth, pearls and infinite diamonds flow.
सुमिरन तू घट में करै, घट ही में करतार। घट ही भीतर पाइये, सुरति शब्द भण्डार।।७९३।।
Rememberance should be done within the vessel (body), for the Creator is in the vessel itself. Inside this vessel, you will find the treasure of consciousness and the word.
थोड़ा सुमिरन बहुत सुख, जो करि जानै कोय। हरदी लग न फिटकरी, चोखा ही रंग होय।।७९४।।
A little remembrance brings great happiness if one truly understands. Turmeric alone is not enough; it is the purity that determines the color.
तू तू करता तू भया, तुझ में रहा समाय। तुझ मांहि मन मिलि रहा, अब कहुं अनत न जाय।।७९५।।
You are, you do, you become; you reside within yourself. The mind merges with you; now there is no end to it.
अमृत पावै ते जना, सतगुरु लागा कान। वस्तु अगोचर मिलि गई, मन नहिं आवा आन।।८०४।।
One who receives the nectar has their ears attuned to the True Guru. The intangible essence is attained, and the mind does not come or go elsewhere.
यह तत वह तत एक है, एक प्रान दुई गात। अपने जिय से जानिये, मेरे जिय की बात।।८०६।।
This essence and that essence are one; one breath with two forms. Understand from your own heart, what is spoken from my heart.
कबीर हम गुरु रसि पिया, बाकी रही न छाक। पाका कलश कुम्हार का, बहुरि न चढ़सी चाक।।८०७।।
Kabir says we have drunk the nectar of the Guru; no trace of doubt remains. The earthen pitcher of the potter is baked; it will not be placed back on the wheel.
जाके चित्त अनुराग है, ज्ञान मिने नर सोय। बिन अनुराक न पावई, कोटि करै जो कोय।।८१०।।
One who has devotion in their mind, obtains knowledge and enlightenment. Without devotion, even those who perform millions of actions cannot attain it.
प्रेम प्रेम सब कोइ कहै, प्रेम न चीन्है कोय। जा मारण साहिब मिलै, प्रेम कहावै सोय।।८१३।।
Everyone speaks of love, but no one truly understands it. When one meets the true master, then only can love be understood.
गहरी प्रीति सुजान की, बढ़त-बढ़त बढ़ि जाय। ओछी प्रीति अजान की, घटत घटत घटि जाय।।८१९।।
Deep love of the wise continually grows and expands. Shallow love of the ignorant diminishes and fades away.
ज्यौं कोरी रेजा बुनै, नीरा आवै छोर। ऐसा लेखा मीच का, दौरि सके तो दौर।।८४४।।
Just as a weaver creates cloth with thread and water, Such is the account of the thread of life; if you can, understand it.
मरुं मरुं सब कोइ कहै, मेरी मरै बलाय। मरना था सो मरि चुका, अब को मरने जाय।।८५०।।
Everyone says 'I am dying, my death is inevitable.' If I had to die, I have already died; now who will die?
मन मूआ माया मुई, संशय मुआ शरीर। अविनाशी जो ना मरे, तो क्यों मरे कबीर।।८५१।।
The mind is dead, illusion is dead, and doubt has killed the body. The imperishable one does not die; then why does Kabir die?
कबीर नाव तो झांझरि, भरी बिराने भार। खेवट सों परिच नहीं, क्यौंकर उतरै पार।।८५९।।
Kabir, the boat is leaky, and it's overloaded. Without knowing the boatman, how will you cross over?
जागो लोगो मत सुवो, ना कुरु नींद से प्यार। जैसा सपना रैन का, ऐसा यह संसार।।८६०।।
Wake up people, do not love sleep. This world is like a dream of the night.
नर नारायन रूप है, तू मति जानै देह। जो समझे तो समझ ले, खलक पलक में खेह।।८६९।।
Man is a form of God, do not mistake it as mere flesh. Understand this if you can, for the world can turn to ashes in a blink of an eye.
आंखि न देखे बावरा, शब्द सुनै नहिं कान। सिर के केस उज्जल भये, अबहूं निपट अजान।।८७०।।
The foolish person neither sees with his eyes nor hears with his ears. Even though his hair has turned white, he remains utterly ignorant.
चेत सबेरे बावरे, फिर पाछे पछिताय।। ताको जाना दूर है, कहैं कबीर बुझाय।।८७२।।
Wake up early, foolish one, or you will regret it later. Your destination is far, says Kabir, so understand this now.
मूरख शब्द न मानई, धर्न न सुनै विचार। सत्य शब्द नहिं खोजई, जावैं जम के द्वार।।८७३।।
The fool does not heed wise words, nor does he listen to reason. He does not seek the truth, and thus he walks toward the gates of death.
या मन गहि जो थिर रहै, गहरी धूनि गाड़ि। चलती बिरियां उठि चला, हस्ती घोड़ा छाड़ि।।८७९।।
If you can control the mind and stabilize it, it becomes deeply rooted. Otherwise, it will wander off, leaving behind even the strongest of things like elephants and horses.
पांचों नौबत बाजते, होत छत्तीसों राग। सो मन्दिर खाली पड़े, बैठन लागे काग।।८९७।।
The five instruments play, creating thirty-six melodies. Yet that temple remains empty, as crows come to sit.
घर रखवाला बाहिरा, चिड़ियां खाइ खेत। आधा परा ऊबरे, चेति सके तो चेत।।९०१।।
The caretaker is outside, while birds eat the crops in the field. Half the crops are ruined; if you can, awaken and be alert.
खलक मिला खाली हुआ, बहुत किया बकवाद। बांझ हिलावै पालना, तामें कौन स्वाद।।९०२।।
The world becomes empty with much talk and argument. A barren cradle shakes; what pleasure does it hold?
जनमैं मन बिचारि के, कूरे काम निवारि। जिन पंथा तोहि चालना, सोई पंथ संवारि।।९०४।।
Consider the path of the mind and discard futile actions. The path that guides you is the one that leads to fulfillment.
कहत सुनत जग जात हैं, विषय न सुझै काल। कहैं कबीर सुन प्रानिया, साहिब नाम सम्हाल।।९१६।।
The world talks and listens, but the subject is not understood by time. Kabir says, listen, O soul, take care of the Lord's name.
यह बिरियां तो फिरि नहिं, मन में देख विचार। आया लाभहि कारनै, जनम जुआ मति हार।।९२८।।
These worldly pleasures do not last, think and consider in your mind. Gains have come for a reason; life is like a gamble where the mind loses.
जो जल बाढ़े नाव में, घर में बाढ़ै दाम। दोनों हाथ उलीचिये, यही सयानों का काम।।९४०।।
If water floods the boat, and money floods the home, Use both hands to bail out the water; this is the wise course of action.
जहां न जाको गुन लहै, तहां न ताको ठांव। धोबी बसके क्या करै, दिगम्बर के गांव।।९४२।।
Where one does not find any virtues, there is no place for them. What can the washerman do in the village of the naked ascetic?
हस्ती चढ़िये ज्ञान का, सहज दुलीचा डार। स्वान रूप संसार है, भूंकन दे झकमार।।९४४।।
The self rises with knowledge, like a simple piece of cloth. The world is like a dog; barking causes it to stir.
मांगन को भल बोलना, चोरन को भल चूप। माली को भल बरसनो, धोबी को भल धूप।।९४५।।
It is good to speak kindly to the beggar, silence is good for the thief. Rain is good for the gardener, and sunlight is good for the washerman.
बालों जैसी किरकिरी, ऊजल जैसी धूप। ऐसी मीठी कछु नहीं, जसी मीठी चूप।।९४६।।
Like the irritation of lice, like the bright sunlight. There is nothing as sweet as silence, like the sweetness of quietude.
नाम भजो मन बसि करो, यही बात है तंत। काहे को पढ़ि पचि मरो, कोटिन ज्ञान गिरंथ।।९५२।।
Chant the name and settle it in your mind; this is the essence of the matter. Why read and die pondering, when countless books of knowledge are there?
चातुर को चिन्ता घनी, नहिं मूरख को लाज। सर अवसर जाने नहीं, पेट भरन सूं काज।।९५३।।
The clever are full of worries, while the foolish have no shame. A wise person does not miss an opportunity; they work to fill their belly.
जीवत कोय समझै नहिं, मवा न कह संदेस। तन मन से परिचय नहिं, ताको क्या उपदेस।।९५६।।
The living do not understand; death does not give any message. If there is no self-awareness in the body and mind, what advice can be given?
पढ़ी पढी के पत्थर भये, लिखि लिखि भये जु ईट। कबीर अन्तर प्रेम का, लागी नेक न छींट।।९६३।।
Reading and reading, they have turned into stones, writing and writing, they have become bricks. Kabir says, they have not even a drop of true love within.
चतुराई क्या कीजिये, जो नहिं शब्द समाय। कोटिक गुन सूवा पढ़ै, अन्त बिलाई खाय।।९६५।।
What use is cleverness if it does not contain the Word? A parrot may learn a thousand tricks, but in the end, the cat eats it.
बहते को मत बहन दो, कर गहि एचहु ठौर। कह्यौ सुन्यो मानै नहीं, शब्द कहो दुइ और।।९६९।।
Do not let the flowing one keep flowing, hold them at this place. If they do not listen to your words, say them twice more.
कहते को कहि जान दे, गुरु की सिख तूं लेय। साकट जान और स्वान को, फेरि जवाब न देय।।९७०।।
Speak what you have to say, then follow the Guru's teachings. Do not engage again with the ignorant or dogs.
जिन गुरु जैसा जानिया, तिनको तैसा लाभ। ओसे प्यास न भागसी, जब लगि धसै न आभ।।९८२।।
One who truly knows the Guru gains accordingly. Their thirst will not be quenched until they reach the Guru's true essence.
हाड़ बड़ा हरि भजन करि, द्रव्य बड़ा कछु देह। अकल बड़ी उपकार करि, जीवन का फल येहि।।९८८।।
Use your body to chant Hari's name, use wealth to give. Use your intellect to do good deeds; this is the fruit of life.
कुटिल वचन सबतें बुरा, जारि करै सब छार। साधु वचन जल रूप है, बरसै अमृत धार।।९९१।।
Harsh words are the worst; they burn everything to ashes. The words of the saint are like water; they rain nectar.
करक गड़न दुरजन बचन, रहै सन्त जन टारि। बिजुली परै समुद्र में, कहा सकेगी जारि।।९९८।।
The harsh words of the wicked may prick, but the saints let them pass. Just as lightning strikes the ocean, but it cannot burn it.
सोई शब्द निज सार है, जो गुरु दिया बताय। बलिहारो वा गुरुन की, सीष बियोग न जाय।।१०००।।
The true essence lies in the words that the guru has imparted. I am devoted to that guru, for whose teachings I never feel separated.
सीखै सुनै विचार ले, ताहि शब्द सुख देय। बिना समझै शब्द गहै, कछु न लोहा लेय।।१००१।।
Learning, listening, and understanding bring joy from the words. But without understanding, mere repetition of words brings no gain.
जंत्र मंत्र सब झूठ है, मति भरमो जग कोय। सार शब्द जानै बिना, कागा हंस न होय।।१००३।।
All charms and spells are false, don't be deluded by the world. Without knowing the essence of the word, a crow cannot become a swan.
जिहि शब्दे दुख ना लगे, सोई शब्द उचार। तपत मिटी सीतल भया, सोई शब्द ततसार।।१००६।।
Speak words that do not cause pain. The word that cools down the heat is the essence of truth.
शब्द बराबर धन नहीं, जो कोय जानै बोल। हीरा तो दामों मिलैं, सब्दहि मोल न तोल।।१००९।।
There is no wealth equal to the word, for those who know how to speak. Diamonds can be bought for a price, but words are priceless.
सन्त सन्तोषी सर्वदा, शब्दहिं भेद विचार। सतगुरु के परताप ते, सहज सील मतसार।।१०१०।।
A true saint is always content, understanding the depth of words. By the grace of the true guru, one attains a simple, virtuous, and pure essence.
जिभ्या जिन बिस में करी, तिन बस कियो जहान। नहिं तो औगुन ऊपजे, कहि सब संत सुजान।।१०११।।
Those who control their tongue, control the world. Otherwise, vices arise, as all wise saints say.
टीला टीली ढाहि के, फोरि करै मैदान। समझ सका करता चलै, सोई शब्द निरबान।।१०१४।।
Breaking down the hills and leveling the field, one who understands the creator walks the path of liberation.
शब्द दुराया ना दुरै, कहूं जु ढोल बजाय। जो जन होवै जौहरी, लेहैं सीस चढ़ाय।।१०१५।।
Words cannot be hidden, even if one beats a drum. A true connoisseur will always hold them in high regard.
रैन तिमिर नासत भयो, जबही भानु उगाय। सार शब्द के जानते, करम भरम मिटि जाय।।१०१७।।
Just as the darkness of night disappears when the sun rises, knowing the essence of the word dispels the illusions of karma.
सहज तराजू आनि कै, सब रस देखा तोलि। सब रस माहीं जीभ रस, जु कोय जानै बोलि।।१०१८।।
Bringing the scale of simplicity, all tastes were weighed. Among all tastes, the taste of the tongue is the best for those who know how to speak.
शब्द न करै मुलाहिजा, शब्द फिरै चह धार। आपा पर जब चीन्हिया, तब गुरु सिष व्यवहार।।१०२०।।
Words do not show mercy, they cut like a sharp sword. When one understands oneself, then the relationship between guru and disciple is established.
जिह्वा में अमृत बसै, जो कोई जानै बोल। विष बासुकि का ऊतरे, जिह्वा तनै हिलोल।।१०२२।।
Nectar resides on the tongue of one who knows how to speak. Even the poison of the serpent can be overcome with a wise tongue.
कबीर सार शब्द निज जानि के, जिन कीन्ही परतीति। काग कुमत तजि हंस ह्वै, चले सु भौजल जीति।।१०२३।।
Kabir says, those who realize the essence of the word and have faith, leave the crow's mentality and become swans, crossing the ocean of life.
शब्द उपदेस जु मैं कहुँ, जु कोय मानै संत। कहै कबीर विचारि के, ताहि मिलावौं कंत।।१०२६।।
The teaching of the word that I give, if any saint accepts it, says Kabir, after careful reflection, I will unite them with the Divine.
बोलै बोल विचारि के, बैठे ठौर संभारि। कहैं कबीर ता दास को, कबह न आवै हारि।।१०२७।।
Speak only after careful thought, and act with caution. Kabir says, such a servant of God never faces defeat.
जीवन में मरना भला, जो मरि जानै कोय। मरना पहिले जो मरै, अजर अमर सो होय।।१०२९।।
It is better to die while living, if one knows how. One who dies before death, becomes eternal and immortal.
मन को मिरतक देखि के, मति माने विश्वास। साधु तहां लौं भय करे, जौ लौ पिंजर सांस।।१०३०।।
Seeing the mind as dead, do not trust it. The saint remains cautious as long as there is breath in the body.
चाकी चली गुपाल की, सब जग पीसा झार। रुड़ा शब्द कबीर का, डारा पाट उघार।।१०४७।।
The mill of Gopal grinds the entire world, separating the wheat from the chaff. The words of Kabir act as a block that opens the mill's jaws.
कबीर मन्दिर आपने, नित उठि करता आल। मरघट देखी डरपता, चौड़े दीया डाल।।१०७१।।
Kabir's own temple is always attended, yet he fears the cremation ground and lights a broad lamp.
ऐसे सांच न मानई, तिलकी देखो जोय। जारि बारि कोयला करै, जमता देखा सोय।।१०७५।।
One who does not believe in such truth, see the sesame seed as an example. The coal that burns repeatedly shows the truth.
हाथों परबत फाड़ते, समुन्दर घट भराय। ते मुनिवर धरती गले, का कोई गरब कराय।।१०८३।।
Mountains are torn by hands, and the oceans fill up. The sage embraces the earth, what can pride achieve?
जिनके नाम निशान है, तिन अटकावै कौन। पुरुष खजाना पाइया, मिटि गया आवा गौन।।१०८६।।
Those who have a name and mark, who can obstruct them? The man who has found the treasure, the past and future become insignificant.
स्वारथ का सबको सगा, सारा ही जग जान। बिन स्वारथ आदर करै, सो नर चतुर सुजान।।१०८९।।
Everyone is dear to themselves, the whole world knows this. One who shows respect without self-interest is truly wise and learned.
कुंभै बांधा जल रहै, जल बिन कुंभ न होय। ज्ञानै बांध बन रहै, मन बिनु ज्ञान न होय।।११०३।।
A pot holds water, and without water, the pot has no value. Knowledge is bound by the mind, and without the mind, knowledge does not exist.
मन चलतां तन भी चलै, ताते मन को घेर। तन मन दोऊ बसि करै, होय राइ सुमेर।।११०४।।
When the mind is restless, the body also becomes restless. When both the mind and body are under control, one can attain the heights of Mount Sumeru.
पहिले यह मन कागा था, करता जीवन घात। अब तो मन हंसा भया, मोती चुनि-चुनि खात।।११०७।।
Earlier this mind was like a crow, causing harm to life. Now the mind has become like a swan, consuming pearls one by one.
कबीर मन परबत भया, अब मैं पाया जान। टांकी लागी प्रेम की, निकसी कंचन खान।।११०८।।
Kabir says that the mind has become like a mountain, and I have realized this. The reservoir of love has yielded a treasure of gold.
काया कजरी बन अहै, मन कुंजर महमन्त। अंकुस ज्ञान रतन है, फेरै साधु सन्त।।११०९।।
The body is like a dark cloud, and the mind is like an elephant. The goad of knowledge is with the saints and sages.
बिना सीस का मिरग है, चहं दिस चरने जाय। बांधि लाओ गुरुज्ञान सूं, राखो तत्व लगाय।।१११०।।
The deer without its antlers roams in all directions. Bind it with the knowledge of the Guru and keep it focused.
अपने अपने चोर को, सब कोय डारै मार। मेरा चोर मुझको मिलै, सरबस डारुं वार।।११११।।
Everyone punishes the thief within others, but the thief within me I punish myself. I punish everyone with this realization.
चंचल मन निहचल करै, फिरि फिरि नाम लगाय। तन मन दोउ बसि करै, ताका कछु नहिं जाय।।१११५।।
When the restless mind becomes still and repeats the name of the Lord, both body and mind are controlled, and nothing is lost.
कबीर मनहि गयंद है, आंकुस दे दे राखु। विष की बेली परिहरो, अमृत का फल चाखु।।१११७।।
Kabir says the mind is wild; keep it under control with discipline. Abandon the poisonous creeper and taste the fruit of immortality.
महमंता मन मारि ले, घट ही मांही घेर। जल ही चालै पीठ दे, आंकूस दे दे फेर।।१११९।।
Kill the egoistic mind and surround yourself with purity. Let the water flow from the back and control it with a discipline.
मन मनसा जब जायगी, तब आवैगी और। जबही निहचल होगया, तब पावैगा ठौर।।११२०।।
When the mind is tamed and becomes stable, then peace will come. Only when it becomes steady, will it find its place.
अकथ कथा या मनहि की, कहैं कबीर समुझाय। जो याको समझा परै, ताको काल न खाय।।११२१।।
The story of the unspoken is told by Kabir. Those who understand it are not consumed by time.
सुर नर मुनि सबको ठगै, मनहिं लिया औतार। जो कोई याते बच, तीन लोक ते न्यार।।११२२।।
The gods, humans, and sages all deceive, taking the mind as their vehicle. Those who escape this deception are beyond the three worlds.
अपने उरझै उरझिया, दीखै सब संसार। अपने सुरझै सुरझिया, यह गुरु ज्ञान विचार।।११२६।।
The one who is entangled in their own confusion sees the entire world in confusion. The one who is clear within sees the true essence through the wisdom of the guru.
मन के मते न चालिये, मन के मते अनेक। जो मन पर असवार है, सो साधु कोय एक।।११२८।।
Do not follow the whims of the mind, which has many desires. The one who is disciplined over the mind is truly a sage.
कबीर मन मरकट भया, नेक न कहुं ठहराय। राम नाम बांधै बिना, जित भावै तित जाय।।११३०।।
Kabir says the mind is like a monkey, and it does not settle down in goodness. Without holding onto the name of Ram, it goes wherever it desires.
मन गोरख मन गोविंद, मन ही औघड़ सोय। जो मन राखै जतन करि, आपै करता होय।।११३४।।
The mind is like Gorakh, the mind is like Govind; it is indeed a wandering ascetic. The one who diligently maintains the mind, becomes the doer himself.
जेती लहर समुद्र की, तेती मन की दौर। सहजै हीरा नीपजे, जो मन आवै ठौर।।११३६।।
As many waves there are in the ocean, so are the movements of the mind. The true jewel is found naturally, where the mind finds a place.
कबीर यह गत अटपटी, चटपट लखी न जाय। जो मन की खटपट मिटै, अधर भये ठहराय।।११४१।।
Kabir says that this state is peculiar, and cannot be quickly understood. When the disturbance of the mind ceases, the meaning becomes clear.
मन पांचौं के बस पड़ा, मन के बस नहिं पांच। जित देखूं तित दौं लगी, जित भाग् तित आंच।।११४७।।
The mind is under the control of the five senses, but the five senses are not under the control of the mind. Wherever I look, there are distractions; wherever I go, there is burning.
मन मुरीद संसार है, गुरु मुरीद कोय साध। जो माने गुरु बचन को, ताका मता अगाध।।११५०।।
The mind is a disciple of the world, and the guru is a true disciple. He who follows the words of the guru, his intellect is profound.
मन ही को परमोधिये, मन ही को उपदेस। जो यह मन को बसि करै, सीष होय सब देस।।११५१।।
The mind is the supreme teacher and the mind itself is the guide. He who controls the mind becomes the master of all lands.
कागद केरी नावरी, पानी केरी गंग। कहै कबीर कैसे तिरै, पांच कुसंगी संग।।११५४।।
The paper boat and the water of the Ganges are alike. Kabir asks, how can one cross over with five bad companions?
मन पंछी तब लगि उडै, विषय वासना मांहि। ज्ञान बाज को झपट में, जब लगि आवै नांहि।।११५६।।
The mind, like a bird, keeps flying in the desires of worldly pleasures. Knowledge is like a hawk that snatches the mind when it does not arrive.
मन नहिं मारा करि सका, न मन पांच प्रहारि। सील सांच सरधा नहीं, अजह् इन्द्रि उघारि।।११५७।।
The mind cannot be killed by force, nor can it be conquered by five attacks. Without virtue, truth, and faith, the senses remain uncovered.
मन अपना समुझाय ले, आया गाफिल होय। बिन समुझे उठि जायेगा, फोकट फेरा तोय।।११५९।।
Understand your own mind, or it will rise without understanding, and you will wander aimlessly.
या मारा जग भरमिया, सबको लगी उपाध। यहि तारन के कारनै, जग में आये साध।।११६१।।
The world is deluded by false labels; it is for this reason that the wise ones came into the world to guide.
माया सम नहिं मोहिनी, मन समान नहिं चोर। हरिजन सम नहिं पारखी, कोई न दीसे ओर।।११६९।।
There is no enchantress like illusion, and no thief like the mind. There is no connoisseur like a saint, and none can be seen elsewhere.
माया सेती मति मिली, जो सोबरिया देहि। नारद से मुनिवर गले, क्याहि भरोसा तेहि।।११८०।।
Intellect gained through illusion is unreliable. Even revered sages like Narada have been deceived by it.
माया दीपक नर पतंग, भ्रमि भ्रमि माहिं परन्त। कोई एक गुरु ज्ञानते, उबरे साधु सन्त।।११८१।।
Illusion is like a lamp and humans are like moths, wandering and burning. Only one true guru’s knowledge can help a saint escape.
माया देाय प्रकार की, जो जानै सो खाय। एक मिलावै राम को, एक नरक ले जाय।।११८३।।
Illusion comes in two forms: one that leads to God and one that takes you to hell. The wise understand and choose the right path.
कबीर माया मोहिनी, मांगी मिलै न हाथ। मना उतारी जूठ करु, लागी डोलै साथ।।११९४।।
Kabir says, illusion is enchanting but cannot be grasped by hand. If you rid the mind of false desires, illusion will no longer follow you.
कबीर माया मोहिनी, मोहै जान सुजान। भागै हू छूटे नहीं, भरि भरि मारै बान।।१२०३।।
Kabir says, illusion is enchanting and deceives even the wise. Even if one tries to escape, it does not let go and continually strikes with its arrows.
जिनको सांई रंग दिया, कबहुं न होय कुरंग। दिन-दिन बानी आगरी, चढ़ै सवाया रंग।।१२०४।।
Those who are dyed in the color of the Lord never become impure. Day by day, their speech becomes purer, and they grow in divine hue.
अष्ट सिद्धि नव निद्धि लौं, सबही मोह की खान। त्याग मोह की वासना, कहैं कबीर सुजान।।१२०९।।
The eight siddhis and nine treasures are all sources of illusion. Renounce the desire for illusion, says the wise Kabir.
मोह फंद सब फंदिया, कोय न सके निवार। कोई साधु जन पारखी, बिरला तत्व विचार।।१२१२।।
Desire is the net of all nets; no one can escape it. Only a few wise saints, who have truly contemplated the essence, can understand it.
जब घट मोह समाइया, सबै भया अंधियार। निर्मोह ज्ञान विचार के, साधु उतरे पार।।१२१५।।
When the illusion of desire fills the vessel, everything becomes dark. Only those who have transcended illusion through knowledge and contemplation reach the other shore.
काहु जुगति ना जानिया, किहि बिधि बचै सुखेत। नहिं बंदगी नहिं दीनता, नहिं साधु संग होत।।१२१६।।
Without knowing the right method, how can one attain happiness? There is neither devotion, nor humility, nor association with saints.
सहकामी दीपक दसा, सीखे तेल निवास। कबीर हीरा सन्त जन, सहजै सदा प्रकाश।।१२२२।।
A lamp that shares its oil and light is learned in the ways of oil. Kabir says that a true saint shines effortlessly like a gem.
काम क्रोध मद लोभी की, जब लग घट में खान। कबीर मूरख पंडिता, दोनो एक समान।।१२२३।।
When desire, anger, pride, and greed are present in the heart, the learned scholar and the fool are the same.
बुन्द खिरी नर नारि की, जैसी आतम घात। अज्ञानी मानै नहीं, येहि बात उत्पात।।१२२४।।
Just as a drop of oil affects the body, so does the harm of ignorance affect the soul. The ignorant do not recognize this fact.
बीर औंधी खोपड़ी, कबहूं धापै नांहि। तीन लोक की सत्पदा, कब आवै घर मांहि।।१२४४।।
A wise person with a turned head (ignorant) never covers his own head. The truth of the three worlds, when will it come to his home?
जब मन लागा लोभ सो, गया विषय में भोय। कहैं कबीर विचार के, केहि प्रकार धन होय।।१२४५।।
When the mind is attached to greed, it gets lost in worldly desires. Kabir says, by contemplating, how can one attain true wealth?
दीप कू झोला पवन है, नर को झोला नारि। ज्ञानी झोला गर्व हैं, कहैं कबीर पुकारि।।१२४७।।
A lamp’s bag is the wind, a man's bag is a woman, and a wise person’s bag is pride. Kabir says, this is what is called pride.
मान बड़ाई कूकरी, सन्तन खेदी जान। पांडव जग पावन भया, सुपच बिराजै आन।।१२५६।।
The pride of honor is false; wise people understand this. The Pandavas made the world sacred, while the wicked remain away.
बड़ी बिपति बड़ाई है, नन्हा करम से दूर। तारे सब न्यारे रहें, गहै चंद और सूर।।१२५९।।
Great calamity is indeed a form of greatness, far from small deeds. Stars all remain distinct while the moon and sun are central.
माया तजी तो क्या भया, मान तजा नहिं जाय। मान मड़े मुनिवर गले, मान सबन को खाय।।१२६७।।
What has been achieved by renouncing illusion if pride is not abandoned? Even the greatest sages are consumed by pride.
बग ध्यानी ज्ञानी घने, अरथी मिले अनेक। मान रहित कबीर कहैं, सो लाखन में एक।।१२६९।।
Many learned and wise people are found, and many hearse carriers are seen. But Kabir says that the one without pride is rare among thousands.
ऊंचा देखि न राचिये, ऊंचा पेड़ खजूर। पंखि न बैठे छांयड़े, फल लागा पै दूर।।१२७१।।
Do not admire height; the date palm tree is tall. Birds do not sit in its shade, and its fruits are far away.
ऊंचा पानी ना टिकै, नीचे ही ठहराय। नीचा होय सो भरि पिये, ऊंचा पियासा जाय।।१२७४।।
High water does not stay; it settles at the bottom. The low level is filled up, while high remains thirsty.
बड़ा हुआ तो क्या हुआ, जोरे बड़ मति नांहि। जैसे फूल उजाड़ का, मिथ्या हो झड़ जांहि।।१२७५।।
What is the use of being great if there is no wisdom? Like a flower that withers, greatness without wisdom is false.
मान तजा तो क्या भया, मन का मता न जाय। संत बचन मानै नहीं, ताको हरि न सुहाय।।१२७६।।
What is gained by renouncing pride if the mind is not controlled? One who does not heed the words of the saints is not favored by the Divine.
जौन मिला सो गुरु मिला, चेला मिला न कोय। चेला को चेला मिलै, तब कछु होय तो होय।।१२७८।।
One who has met a guru has truly met one. If a disciple meets another disciple, then something significant might happen.
सातों सागर मैं फिरा, जम्बू दीप दै पीठ। पर निन्दा नाहीं करे, सो कोई बिरला दीठ।।१२८४।।
I have roamed across all seven seas and visited Jambudweep. It is rare to find someone who does not engage in criticism.
माखी गहै कुवास को, फूल वास नहिं लेयै। मधुमाखी हैं साधु जन, पुष्प बास चित देयं।।१२८५।।
A fly is attracted to filth and does not care for flowers. But a honeybee, like a saint, is attracted to the fragrance of flowers.
आपन को न सराहिये, और न कहिये रंक। क्या जानो केहि ब्रिष तलि, कूरा होइ करंक।।१२८८।।
Do not praise yourself or consider yourself lowly. How can you know what is hidden beneath the surface?
दोष पराया देखि के, चले हसन्त हसन्त। अपने चित्त न आवई, जिनको आदि न अन्त।।१२८९।।
People laugh and point out others' faults, but they cannot see their own faults. They are ignorant of both the beginning and the end.
आपन को न सरारिये, पर निन्दिये न कोय। चढ़ना लम्बा धौहरा, ना जाने क्या होय।।१२९०।।
Do not criticize yourself or others. The climb is long and steep; who knows what will happen.
निन्दक तो है नाक बिन, सोहै नकटो माहिं। साधु जन गुरु भक्त जो, तिनमें सोहै नाहिं।।१२९५।।
A critic is like a leech without a nose; they are found in dirty places. They do not belong among saints, gurus, or devotees.
निन्दक नियरे राखिये, आंगन कुटी छवाय। बिन पानी साबुन बिना, निरमल करे सुभाय।।१२९९।।
Keep the critic near, as a small hut in the courtyard. Without water and soap, it remains clean in its own way.
कूकस कूटै कण बिना, बिन करनी का ज्ञान। ज्यौं बन्दूक गोली बिना, भड़क न मारै आन।।१३०२।।
A critic is like a drum without a stick; it makes noise but lacks knowledge. Similarly, a gun without bullets does not fire.
आप राखि परमोधिये, सुनै ज्ञान अकराथि। तुस कूटै कन बाहिरी, कछू न आवै हाथि।।१३०३।।
Preserve yourself with wisdom, for those who speak knowledge but act otherwise gain nothing.
साखी लाय बनाय के, इत उत अच्छर काटि। कहैं कबीर कब लगि जिये, जूठी पत्तर चाटि।।१३११।।
Bringing together scraps from here and there, Kabir says, when will you stop eating the false leaves?
कथनी कथि फूला फिरै, मेरे होयै उचार। भाव भक्ति समझै नहीं, अंधा मूढ़ गंवार।।१३१३।।
Words may appear flowery, but without understanding true devotion and feeling, they are of no use. Such ignorant fools do not comprehend the essence.
चतुराई चुल्है पड़े, ज्ञान कथै हुलसाय। भाव भक्ति जानै बिना, ज्ञानपनो चलि जाय।।१३१५।।
Cunning is like a burnt stove; knowledge seems to be lost. Without understanding true devotion and feeling, knowledge becomes meaningless.
श्रोता तो घरहीं नहीं, वक्ता बकै सो बाद। श्रोता वक्ता एक घर, तब कथनी का स्वाद।।१३१८।।
The listener is not even present at home; the speaker speaks only later. When the listener and speaker are in the same house, then only the essence of words is understood.
करनी बीन कथनी कथै, अज्ञानी दिन रात। कूकर सम भूकत फिरै, सुनी सुनाई बात।।१३२२।।
Without actions, mere words are meaningless. Ignorant people speak day and night without understanding, like a dog that keeps barking at hearsay.
करनी का रजमा नहीं, कथनी मेरु समान। कथता बकता मर गया, मूरख मूढ़ अजान।।१३२४।।
Actions are not as transient as words, which are like Mount Meru. The speaker who only talks but does not act, is foolish and ignorant.
करनी बिन कथनी कथै, गुरु पद लहै न सोय।। बातों के पकवान से, धीरा नाहीं कोय।।१३२७।।
Without actions, mere words are meaningless. One cannot attain the guru's position with just words. No one becomes wise through mere talks.
जब तू आया जगत में, लोग हंसे तू रोय। ऐसी करनी ना करो, पीछे हंसे सब कोय।।१३३१।।
When you entered the world, people laughed while you cried. Do not act in a way that will make people laugh at you later.
बाहिर सुख दुख देन को, हुकुम करै मन मांय। जब उठे मन बखत को, बाहिर रूप धरि आय।।१३४५।।
External happiness and sorrow are dictated by the mind. When the mind is ready, it manifests as external experiences.
पंख होत परबस पर्यो, सूवा के बुधि नाहिं। अकिल बिहूना आदमी, यों बन्धा जग माहिं।।१३५२।।
Even with wings, the bird is controlled and lacks intelligence. A foolish and ignorant person is similarly trapped in the world.
पाहन पूजै हरि मिलै, तो मैं पूजूं पहार। ताते तो चक्की भली, पीसि खाय संसार।।१३५८।।
If God could be found by worshipping a stone, then I'd worship a mountain. Better to use a millstone and feed the world.
आतम दृष्टि जानै नहीं, न्हावै प्रात:काल। लोकलाज लिया रहे, लागा भरम कपाल।।१३६०।।
He doesn't understand the vision of the self, but bathes early in the morning to maintain his social reputation, carrying the illusion on his forehead.
कबीर जेता आतमा, तेता सालिगराम। बोलनहारा पूजिये, नहिं पाहन सो काम।।१३६१।।
Kabir says that every soul is a Shaligram. Worship those who speak wisdom, not the stones.
लिखा पढ़ी में सब पड़े, यह गुन तजै न कोय। सबै पड़े भ्रम जाल में, डारा यह जिय खोय।।१३६३।।
Everyone is lost in reading and writing, but no one leaves this habit. They are all trapped in a web of illusions, losing their minds.
जप तप दीखै थोथरा, तीरथ ब्रत विश्वास। सूवा सेमल सेइया, यों जग चला निरास।।१३६५।।
Chanting and penance appear hollow, pilgrimages and vows are empty faith. Like a parrot sitting on a silk-cotton tree, the world moves on in disappointment.
बिना वसीले चाकरी, बिना बुद्धि की देह। बिना ज्ञान का जोगना, फिरै लगाये खेह।।१३६६।।
Service without a guide, a body without wisdom, and a monk without knowledge wander aimlessly, covered in dust.
पढ़ा सुना सीखा सभी, मिटी न संसै भूल। कहैं कबीर कासों कहूं, यह सब दुख का मूल।।१३७४।।
Though I have read, heard, and learned everything, my doubts and delusions haven't vanished. Kabir says, whom should I tell, this is the root of all suffering.
पाहन को क्या पूजिये, जो नहिं देय जवाब। अंधा नर आशा मुखी, यों ही खोवै आब।।१३७६।।
Why worship a stone that cannot answer? The blind man, driven by hope, loses his essence in vain.
तेरे हिय में राम हैं, ताहि न देखा जाय। ताको तो तब देखिये, दिल की दुविधा जाय।।१३७७।।
Ram resides in your heart, but you cannot see him. You will see him only when the doubts in your heart disappear.
दुविधा जाके मन बसै, दयावन्त जिय नाहिं। कबीर त्यागो ताहि को, भूलि देहि जनि बाहिं।।१३७९।।
The one whose mind is filled with doubts cannot have a compassionate heart. Kabir says, leave such a person, do not embrace him.
निर्मल गुरु के ज्ञान सो, निरमल साधु भाय। कोइला होय न ऊजला, सौ मन साबुन लाय।।१३८१।।
The pure knowledge of the guru makes the saint pure. But coal cannot become white, even with a hundred loads of soap.
दया दया सब कोई कहै, मर्म न जानै कोय। जाति जीव जानै नहीं, दया कहां से होय।।१३८९।।
Everyone speaks of compassion, but no one understands its essence. Without understanding the nature of beings, how can one truly be compassionate?
दया भाव हिरदै नहीं, ज्ञान कथै बेहद। ते नर नरकहि जाहिंगे, सुनि सुनि साखी शबद।।१३९१।।
Those who have no compassion in their hearts but talk endlessly about knowledge will end up in hell, despite hearing countless teachings.
आचारी सब जग मिला, बीचारी नहिं कोय। जाके हिरदै गुरु नहीं, जिया अकारथ सोय।।१३९२।।
The world is full of those who follow rituals, but there is no one who truly contemplates. Those without a guru in their hearts live a wasted life.
दया का लच्छन भक्ति है, भक्ति से होवै ध्यान। ध्यान से मिलता ज्ञान है, यह सिद्धान्त उरान।।१३९६।।
Compassion leads to devotion, devotion leads to meditation. Meditation brings knowledge, this is the ultimate principle.
कबीर सबते हम बुरे, हमते भल सब कोय। जिन ऐसा करि बूझिया, मीत हमारा सोय।।१४००।।
Kabir says, 'I am the worst of all, everyone else is better than me.' The one who understands this is my true friend.
दीन लखै मुख सबन को, दीनहि लखै न कोय। भली बिचारी दीनता, नरहु देवता होय।।१४०५।।
Everyone sees the humble face, but no one truly understands humility. Those who embrace true humility can rise from a human to a divine being.
बुरा जो देखन मैं चला, बुरा न मिलिया कोय। जो दिल खोज्या आपना, मुझसा बुरा न कोय।।१४०६।।
I went in search of the bad, but I found none. When I searched my own heart, I found no one worse than myself.
तेरे अन्दर सांच जो, बाहर नाहिं जनाव। जानन हारा जानि है, अन्तर गति का भाव।।१४१४।।
The truth within you is not known outside. The one who understands this inner feeling is truly wise.
सांच हुआ तो क्या हुआ, नाम न सांचा जान। सांचा होय सांचा मिलै, सांचै मांहि समान।।१४१७।।
What if one is truthful? If the name is not truly understood, the genuine truth cannot be recognized. The truth must be found within the truth itself.
कबीर झूठ न बोलिये, जब लग पार बसाय। न जानों क्या होयगा, पल के चौथे भाय।।१४१८।।
Kabir says, do not speak lies, even if you are established in the world. One never knows what might happen in the blink of an eye.
कबीर सुपिनैं हरि मिल्या, सूतां लिया जगाई। आंखि न मीचौ डरपता, मति सुपिनां ह्वै जाइ।।१४२९।।
Kabir met the Lord in a dream and woke up. Not closing the eyes in fear, the understanding remains even in dreams.
गोब्यंदक के गुंण बहुत ह, लिखे जु हिरदै मांहि। डरता पाणी ना पिऊं, मति वै धोंये जांहि।।१४३०।।
The virtues of the Lord are many, written in the heart. The water is not to be feared or avoided; the understanding remains pure.
अंकूर ते बीज बीज ते अंकुर, अंकुर बीज संभारे। काया ते कर्म कर्म ते काया, कोई बिरला जना निखारे।।१४३९।।
From the sprout comes the seed, and from the seed comes the sprout. Similarly, from the body comes action, and from action comes the body; few understand this.
अपनी कहे मेरी सुने, सुनि मिलि एके होय। हमरे देखत जग जात है, ऐसा मिला न कोय।।१४४०।।
When one says 'mine' and the other listens and merges, they become one. In my view, the world moves, but such unity is rare.
आगि जो लागि समुद्र महं, जरे जौ कांदो झारि। पूर्व पछिम के पंडिता, मुए विचारि विचारि।।१४४७।।
When fire burns in the ocean, it consumes everything like a burning ember. Scholars of the east and west ponder and die contemplating it.
आधी साखी सिर खंड़ी, जो निरुवारी जाय। क्या पंडित की पोथियां, राति दिवस मिलि गाय।।१४५०।।
Half of the verse is cut off at the head, which is of no use. What are the books of scholars if they are lost day and night?
आस्ति कहौं तो कोइ न पतीजे, बिना अस्ति का सिद्धा। कहहिं कबीर सनहु हे सन्तो, हीरी हीरा विद्धा।।१४५३।।
If one speaks of existence, no one believes; without existence, there is no true knowledge. Kabir says, listen saints, the diamond is recognized by its own light.
ऊपरि की दोऊ गई, हियहु कि फूटी आंखि। कबीर बिचारा क्या करे, जो जिवहिं नाही झांंकि।।१४५९।।
Both external eyes are gone, and even the internal eye is shattered. Kabir wonders, what can a poor soul do, who cannot see with either?
एक एक निरुवारिये, जो निरुवारी जाय। दुई मुख के बोलना, घना तमाचा खाय।।१४६०।।
One must overcome each problem, as every solution leads to another. Speaking with a double-tongue only invites slaps.
एक ते अनंत ह्यौ, अनन्त एक हो जाय। परिचय भया जु एक तें, अनंत एकहिं मांह समाया।।१४६२।।
From one, it became infinite, and the infinite became one. When one realizes this, the infinite merges back into the one.
ए गणवन्ती बेलरी, तव गुण बरणि न जाय। जड़ काटे सो हरियरी, सींचे ते कम्हलाय।।१४६४।।
O flourishing vine, your qualities cannot be described. If one cuts your roots, you thrive; if watered, you wither.
एक शब्द गुरुदेव का, तामे अनन्त विचार। थाके मुनिजन पंडिता, वेद न पावे पार।।१४६६।।
One word from the Guru contains infinite wisdom. Even sages and scholars are exhausted by it; the Vedas cannot fathom its depth.
औरनि के समुझावते, जिभ्या परिगौ रेत। राशि बिरानी राखते, खयिनि घर का खेत।।१४६८।।
While advising others, your own tongue turns to sand. Guarding others' wealth, you eat up your own fields.
कबीर जात पुकरिया, चढ़ि चंदन की डार। बाट लगाए ना लगे, फिर का लेत हमार।।१४७१।।
Kabir says, the fragrance of sandalwood spreads on its own. If the path is already fragrant, what more can I add?
कर बंदगी विवेक की, भेष धरे सब कोय। सो बन्दगी बहि जान दे, जहां शब्द विवेक न होय।।१४७३।।
Worship with wisdom, for everyone can wear a disguise. True devotion fades away where there is no wisdom in words.
कलि खोटा जग आंधरा, शब्द न माने कोय। जाहि कहौं हित आपना, सौ उठि बैरी होय।।१४७६।।
In this age of darkness, the world is corrupt, and no one listens to the words of wisdom. When I try to guide others, they become my enemies.
कहंता तो बहु मिला, गहंता मिला न कोय। सो कहंता बहि जान दे, जो न गहंता होय।।१४७७।।
There are many who preach, but few who truly grasp. Let go of the one who speaks but does not understand.
काल खड़ा सिर ऊपरै, जागि विराने मीत। जाका घर है गेल में, सो कस सोवे निर्चीत।।१४८०।।
Death stands above your head, and yet you sleep peacefully, unaware. How can one sleep soundly when their house is on fire?
काह बड़े कुल ऊपजे, जो रे बड़ि बुद्धिहि नाहिं। जैसे फूल उजारि के, मिथ्या लगि झरि जाहिं।।१४८३।।
What is the use of being born into a great family if one lacks wisdom? Just like a flower that blooms beautifully but soon withers away.
कोठी तो यह काठ की, ढिग ढिग दीन्ही आगि। पंडित पढ़ि गुणि झोली भये, साकत उबरे भागि।।१४८७।।
The wooden house is set on fire from nearby. The learned ones ponder and get trapped, while the non-believers escape.
गावे कथे विचारे नाहीं, अनजाने का दोहा। कहहिं कबीर पारस पारस बिना, ज्यों पाहन भीतर लोहा।।१४९०।।
Singing or narrating without thought is like an ignorant saying a doha. Kabir says, without the touch of the philosopher's stone, iron remains stone-like.
गुणिया तो गुण ही गहे, निगुर्णयां गुणहि घिनाय। बैलहिं दीजे जायफल, क्या बुझे क्या खाय।।१४९१।।
The virtuous hold onto virtues, while the non-virtuous despise them. Like giving a nutmeg to an ox, how would it understand its value?
गुरु बिचारा क्या करे, जो शिष्यहि में है चूक। शब्द बाण बेधे नहीं, बांस बजावे फूंक।।१४९३।।
What can the poor Guru do, if the disciple is at fault? His words, like arrows, do not penetrate, and the disciple only blows air like a flute.
गुरु माथे से उतरे, शब्द विमूखा होय। बाको काल घसीटि है, राखि सकै नहिं कोय।।१४९४।।
When the Guru's teachings are removed from one's mind, and one turns away from the words, death drags that person, and no one can save them.
गुरु सिकलीगर कीजिए, मनहि मसकला देइ। शब्द छोलना छोलिके, चित्त दर्पण करि लेइ।।१४९५।।
Make the Guru a blacksmith, who polishes the mind. Let him sharpen your words, and turn your heart into a mirror.
छव दर्शन में जो प्रमाणा, तासु नाम बनवारी। कहहिं कबीर ई खलक सयाना, इनमें हमहिं अनारी।।१५०९।।
He who sees proof in the six philosophies is known as Banwari. Kabir says, the world is wise, but I remain a simpleton among them.
जहं गाहक तहं हौं नहीं, हौं तहं गाहक नाहिं। बिनु विवेक भरमत फिरे, पकड़ो शब्द की छांहि।।१५१४।।
Where the customer is, I am not there, and where I am, the customer is not. Without wisdom, people wander aimlessly; grasp the shadow of the word.
जहां बोल तहं अक्षर आया, जहं अक्षर तहं मनहिं डिढाया। बोल अबोल एक है सोई, जिन एक लखा सो बिरला होई।।१५१६।।
Where there is speech, there is the word; where the word is, the mind is fixed. Speech and silence are the same; only a rare one realizes this truth.
जहिया जन्म मुक्ता हता, तहिया हता न कोय। छठी तुम्हारी हौं जगा, तू कह चला वियोग।।१५१७।।
When you were born free, there was no separation. On your sixth day, I awakened, but now you speak of separation.
जाके चलते रौंदे परा, धरती होइ बेहाल। सो सावन्त घर में जरे, पंडित करहु विचार।।१५१९।।
The one whose actions cause the earth to suffer, such a powerful person will burn in his own house; O learned ones, think about this.
जाके मुनिवर तप करे, वेद थके गुण गाय। सोई देव सिखापनो, कोई नहीं पतियाय।।१५२०।।
The sages have performed penances, and the Vedas have sung their praises. But even the teachings of the gods are doubted; no one believes.
जागृत रूपी जीव है, शब्द सुहागा सेत। जर्र बिंदु जल कुक्कुटी, कहहिं कबीर कोइ देख।।१५२२।।
The awakened soul is like a living being, refined by the touchstone of the word. Like a drop of water or a hen, Kabir says, only a few can truly see this.
जासों दिल नहि मिलिया, शब्द बेधा अंग। कहहिं कबीर पुकारि के, हंस बके का अंग।।१५२४।।
When hearts do not unite, words pierce like arrows. Kabir calls out, how can a swan and a crane be the same?
जाहि खोजत कल्पे बीते, घटहिं में सो मूल। बाढे गर्व गुमान ते, ताते परिगो दूर।।१५२५।।
What you search for over ages, is within your own heart. Due to pride and arrogance, it feels far away.
जिनि जिनि शंबल नहि किया, ऐसा पुर पठ (त्त) न पाय। झालि परे दिन आथये, शंबल कियो न जाय।।१५२६।।
Those who did not make preparations, such people will not find a safe place. When the days of crisis arrive, it’s too late to take shelter.
जिव बिनु जीव जिवे नहीं, जिव को जीव अधार। जीव दया के पालिये, पंडित करहु विचार।।१५२७।।
Without life, the living cannot survive; life is the foundation of existence. Show compassion to all living beings, ponder on this, O scholars.
जिह्वा केरे बंद दे, बहु बोलना निवार। पारखी से संग करु, गुरुमुख शब्द विचार।।१५२८।।
Control your tongue, avoid excessive talking. Associate with the wise and reflect on the words of the Guru.
जेते पत्र वनस्पति, औ गंगा के रेणु। पंडित विचारा क्या कहे, कबीर कहा मुख वेण।।१५३२।।
The number of leaves on trees and the dust of the Ganges are countless. What can scholars say? Kabir speaks with clarity.
जेहि मारग गए पंडिता, ताते ही गई बहीर। ऊंची घाटी राम की, तेहि चढ़ि गया कबीर।।१५३३।।
The path taken by the scholars leads to the same place. Kabir ascended the high path of Ram.
जेहि मारग सनकादि, गयो ब्रह्मा विष्णु महेश। कहहिं कबीर सो मारग थाकिया, मैं काहि कहैं उपदेश।।१५३४।।
The path taken by Sanaka and other sages is followed by Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Kabir says that path is exhausted; what can I teach?
जैसी गोली गुमज की, नीच परे ठहराया। ऐसा हृदय मुरख का, शब्द नहीं ठहराय।।१५३८।।
Just as a bullet leaves a mark and stays behind, a foolish heart does not retain words.
जो जानहु जगजीवना, जो जानह तो जीव। पान पचायेहु आपना, पनिया मागि न पीव।।१५४२।।
One who understands the essence of life, understands the true self. He digests his own food and does not beg for others’ water.
जो जानहु जिव आपना, करहू जीव का सार। जियरा ऐसा पाहुना, मिले न दूजी बार।।१५४३।।
One who understands his own life, understands the essence of all lives. Such a guest (soul) is rare and does not come again.
जो तू सांचा बानिया, सांची हाट लगाव। अन्दर झारू देइ के, कूरा दूरि बहाव।।१५४४।।
If you are a true merchant, set up a true market. Clean the inside with a broom, and let the falsehood go away.
ज्ञान रत्न की कोठरी, चुम्बक दिया है ताल। पारखी आगे खालिये, कुंजी बचन रसाल।।१५४६।।
The treasury of knowledge is like a strong box with a magnetic lock. Only an expert can open it with the key of meaningful words.
ज्यों दर्पण प्रतिबिम्ब देखिए, आप दुनों महं सोई। या तत्त्व ते वा तत्त्व है, याही में पुनि होई।।१५४७।।
Just as you see your reflection in a mirror, you are the same in both the physical and spiritual realms. Whether this is the essence or the essence itself, it is all within you.
झालि परे दिन आथये, अन्तर परिगो सांझ। बहुत रसिक के लागते, वेश्या रह गइ बांझ।।१५४९।।
After the flame burns out, the day turns to dusk. Many pleasure-seekers find themselves left barren, like a courtesan abandoned at dusk.
भूला सो भूला, बहुरि के चेतना। विस्मय को छुरी से, संशय को रेतना।।१५५१।।
The one who forgets is forgotten, and again comes to consciousness. With the knife of wonder, the sand of doubt is cut away.
ताहि न कहिए परखू, पाहन लखे जो कोय। नर नग या दिल जो लखे, रतन पारखू सोय।।१५५७।।
Do not judge by appearances; the stone reveals only what is within. The wise recognize the value of a person, a city, or a heart.
सकलो दुर्मति दूर करि, अच्छा जनम बनाव। काग गमन बुधि छोड़ दे, हंस गमन चलि आव।।१५६५।।
Remove all bad intentions, make a good life. Abandon the intellect of the crow, and follow the path of the swan.
दहरा तो नूतन भया, तदपि न चीन्हे कोय। जिहि यह शब्द विवेकिया, छत्र धनी है सोय।।१५६६।।
The place remains new, yet no one recognizes it. One who understands this word of wisdom is the true master.
धरती जानति आप गुण, कधी न होती डोल। तिल तिल गुरुवी होती, रहित ठीकहु के मोल।।१५७०।।
The earth knows its own quality and never shakes. Each grain of sesame is valuable, even without its worth.
नग पषाण जग सकल है, लखवैया सब कोय। नग ते उत्तम पारखी, जग में बिरलै होय।।१५७२।।
All stones in the world are known, and everyone sees them. A true connoisseur of stones is rare in this world.
नष्टा का राज है, नफरत का वरते तेज। सार शब्द टकसार है, हृदये मांहि विवेक।।१५७६।।
The rule of loss is in place, and the force of hatred prevails. The essence of the word is in discerning the wisdom in the heart.
नाना रंग तरंग है, मन मकरंद असूझ। कहहिं कबीर पुकारि के, अकलि कला ले बूझ।।१५७८।।
There are various waves of color, and the mind is like nectar that cannot be understood. Kabir says, understand the subtle art with wisdom.
नाम न जाने ग्राम को, भूलो मारग जाय। काल्हि गड़गा कण्टक, अगुमन कस कराय।।१५७९।।
One who does not know the name of the village loses the way. Yesterday's thunder and thorns lead to trouble in the future.
पंचतत्त के भीतरे, गुप्त वस्तु अस्थान। बिरले मर्म कोई पाइहै, गुरु के शब्द प्रमाण।।१५८२।।
Within the five elements, there is a hidden place. Rarely does anyone understand the essence; the words of the guru are the proof.
पंच तत्त्व को पूतरा, जुक्ति रची मैं कीव। मैं तोहिं पूछौ पंडिता, शब्द बड़ा की जीव।।१५८३।।
The body made of five elements, I have composed the logic. I ask you, scholars, which is greater, the word or the life?
पक्षापक्षी के कारण, सब जग गया भुलान। निरपक्ष होय के हरि भजे, सोई सन्त सुजान।।१५८४।।
Due to the conflicts between factions, the whole world is confused. The wise are those who worship Hari with impartiality.
परदे पाणी दाधिया, संतो करह विचार। सरमा सरमी पचि मुवा, काल घसीट निहार।।१५८५।।
Behind the veil, water and curd, reflect on the saints. The cloth of the worldly, having been burnt, does not withstand the wear of time.
फल में परले बीतिया, लोगहि लागु तिवारि। आगिल सोच निवारि के, पाछिल करहु गुहारि।।१५८७।।
The fruit has become overripe, and people are waiting for it to fall. Instead of worrying about the future, address the concerns of the past.
पाणि पियावत का फिरो, घर घर सायर बारि। तुषावंत जो होंहिगे, पीवहिंगे झख मारि।।१५८९।।
Drinking water and wandering, visiting each house. Those who are wise, enjoy without hesitation; the foolish are caught in a cycle.
पारस परसि ताम्र भो, कंचन बहुरि न तांबा होय। परिमल बास परासहि, बेधे काठ कहै नहिं कोय।।१५९२।।
The touch of the philosopher's stone turns copper into gold, but it doesn’t turn gold back into copper. The essence of the touch is not visible in wood.
पारस रूपी जीव है, लोह रूप संसार। पारस ते पारस भया, परख भया टकसार।।१५९३।।
The living being is like the philosopher's stone, and the world is like iron. The philosopher’s stone turns iron into gold; the essence is in its discernment.
पैठा है घर भीतरे, बैठा है सचेत। जब जैसी गति चाहिए, तब तैसी मति देत।।१५९७।।
Inside the house, the truth resides, sitting alert. Whatever pace you need, it grants you that wisdom.
हौं तो सब ही की कही, मो कहं कोइ न जान। तब भी अच्छा अब भी अच्छा, युग-युग होऊं न आन।।१५९८।।
I speak to everyone, but no one knows me. Even so, it is good; it will always be good, timelessly.
फहम आगे फहम पीछे, फहम बायें डेरे। फहम पर जो फहम करे, सोइ फहम है मेरे।।१६०३।।
Understanding is in front and behind, understanding is on the left and right. The one who understands understanding, that is my understanding.
बना बनाया मानवा, बिना बुद्धि वेतूल। कहा लाल ले कीजिए, बिना बास का फूल।।१६०५।।
Man is created, but without intelligence, it is fruitless. Where is the red flower without fragrance?
बलिहारी तेहि दूध की, जामे निकला घीव। आधी साखी कबीर की, चारि वेद का जीव।।१६०६।।
I am devoted to that milk from which ghee is extracted. Half of Kabir’s wisdom is the essence of the four Vedas.
बलिहारी तेहि पुरुष की, जो परचित परखनहार। साई दीन्हों खांड तो, खारी बूझे गंवार।।१६०७।।
I am devoted to that person who can discern and test the truth. The wise can understand the sweet from the bitter, while the ignorant cannot.
बड़ा तो गए बड़पने, रोम रोम हंकार। सद्गुरु के परचे बिना, चारों वर्ण चमार।।१६०८।।
One may boast of greatness, but without the recognition of the true Guru, they remain a lowly person among the four varnas.
बिनु रसरी गृह खल बंधा, तासू बंधा अलेख। दीन्ह दर्पण हस्त मधे, चसम बिना का देख।।१६१४।।
Without a rope, the house is bound, it is bound in an unseen manner. The mirror in the hand of the poor, shows what is not visible without a glass.
बूंद जो परा समुद्र में, यह जाने सब कोय। समुद्र समाना बूंद में, बुझे बिरला कोय।।१६१६।।
The drop that is in the ocean is known by everyone. To understand the ocean in the drop, is known only to a few.
बैठा रहे सो बानिया, खड़ा रहे सा ग्वाल। जागत रहे सो पाहरु, तिहि धरि आयो काल।।१६२०।।
The merchant sits, the cowherd stands. The one who remains awake, death comes to them only after a long time.
बोलना है बह भांति का, नैनन नहिं कछु सूझ। कहहिं कबीर पुकारि के, घट बानी बूझ।।१६२१।।
The words are of many kinds, but the eyes do not see anything. Kabir says, understand the words of the self.
बोलि हमारी पूर्व की, हमें लखे नहिं कोय। हमें लखे सो जना, जो धुर पूरब का होय।।१६२२।।
Our speech is of the old kind, but no one understands it. Only those who are deeply rooted in the East understand it.
भंवर जाल बगु जाल है, बूड़े बहुत अचेत। कहहिं कबीर ते बांचिहैं, जाके हृदय विवेक।।१६२३।।
The whirlpool and the net are traps; many drown unconsciously. Kabir says, those who have wisdom in their hearts will be saved.
मच्छ बिकाने सब गये, धीमर के दरबार। अंखियां तेरी रतनारी, तुम क्यों पैन्हीं जाल।।१६२८।।
Everyone went to the fish market, to the fisherman’s court. Your eyes are like precious jewels; why then do you wear the net?
मन गयन्द माने नहीं, चले सरति के साथ। महावत बिचारा क्या करे, जो अंकुश नहिं हाथ।।१६३१।।
The mind does not heed to discipline, it flows along with the current. What can the poor mahavat do, if there is no rein in hand?
मुख की मीठी जो कहै, हृदये है मति आन। कहहिं कबीर तेहि लोकनि से, ऐसो राम सयान।।१६४२।।
One who speaks sweetly with the mouth, yet has evil intentions in the heart. Kabir says that such people are deceivers, pretending to be wise.
मूरख को समुझावते, ज्ञान गांठ का जाइ। कोयला होइ न ऊजरो, नव मन साबुन लाइ।।१६४४।।
One who tries to explain to a fool, knowledge gets tied up. Coal does not get cleaned; new soap is needed for the mind.
मैं रोवों ऐहि जगत को, मोको रोवे न कोय। मोको रोवे सो जना, जो शब्द विवेकी होय।।१६४७।।
I cry for this world, but no one cries for me. Only those who are wise in words can truly understand my sorrow.
मानुष बिचारा क्या करे, जाके हृदय शून। सोनहा चाक बिठाइये, फिरि फिरि चाटे चून।।१६४९।।
What can a poor human do, whose heart is empty? Set up a golden plate, but still keep licking the dust.
मानुष बिचारा क्या करे, जाके शून्य शरीर। जो जिव झाखि न ऊपजे, तो काहे पुकार कबीर।।१६५०।।
What can a poor human do, whose body is empty? If the soul does not arise from within, why then call Kabir?
मन सायर मनसा लहरि, बूड़े बहुत अचेत। कहहिं कबीर ते बांचिहै, जाके हृदय विवेक।।१६५२।।
The mind is like the waves of a river, often drowning in ignorance. Kabir says those who read this will have a heart full of wisdom.
मलयागिरि के वास में, वृक्ष रहे सबभोय। कहिबे को चंदन भए, मलयागिरि नहिं होय।।१६५६।।
In the abode of Malaya Mountain, all trees thrive. To say that the sandalwood is the Malaya Mountain, is not correct.
हौं तो सब ही की कही, मेरी कहे न कोय। मेरी कहे सो जना, जो मुझ ही सा होय।।१६५८।।
I speak for everyone, but no one speaks for me. Only those who are like me, can understand what I say.
रंगहि ते रंग उपजे, सब रंग देखी एक। कवन रंग है जीव को, ताकर करहु विवेक।।१६६०।।
Colors arise from colors, all colors are seen as one. What color is there in the soul? Use your wisdom to understand.
रामनाम जिन चीन्हिया, झीने पिंजर तासु। रैनि न आवे नींदरी, अंग न चढ़िया मांसु।।१६६४।।
Those who recognize the name of Ram, find the cage of the body. Night does not bring sleep, and flesh does not satisfy.
राह विचारी क्या करै, जो पन्थि नचले बिचारि। अपना मारग छोड़ि के, फिरे उजारि उजारि।।१६६७।।
What can one do by pondering the path, if the traveler does not move forward? Leaving one's own path, one wanders aimlessly.
लोग भरोसे कवन के, बैठ रहे अरगाय। ताते जियरहिं जमे लूट, जस मटिया लुटै कसाय।।१६६९।।
On whose trust do people sit and relax? Meanwhile, their souls are looted, like clay being looted by the potter.
शब्द हमारा आदि का, पल-पल करहू याद। अंत फलेगी माहली, ऊपर की सब वाद।।१६७५।।
The word is eternal, remember it every moment. In the end, the essence will be revealed, and all other debates will be inconsequential.
शब्द बिना सुरति आंधरी, कहो कहां को जाय। द्वार न पावै शब्द का, फिरि फिरि भटका खाय।।१६७६।।
Without the word, the mind is blind; where can one go? Without the door of the word, one wanders aimlessly.
शब्दै मारा गिर पड़ा, शब्दै छोड़ा राज। जिन्ह जिन्ह शब्द विचारिया, ताको सर गयो काज।।१६७७।।
One who is struck by words falls down, and those who forsake the word lose their kingdom. Those who contemplate the word, their work is accomplished.
शब्द शब्द बहु उंतरे, सार शब्द मथि लीजे। कहहिं कबिर जेहि सार शब्द, नहिं धृग जीवन सो जीजे।।१६७८।।
The words are many, but the essence is in the core word. Kabir says, the one who understands the essence of the word, truly lives a meaningful life.
शब्द हमारा तूं शब्द का, सुनि मति जाह सरक। जो चाहहु निज तत्त्व को, शब्दह लेह परख।।१६७९।।
The word is ours and also the word of others; listen and let the mind discern. If you wish to understand the truth, examine it through the word.
हौं जाना कुलहंस हौ, ताते कीन्हा संग। जो जानत बगु बावरा, ठये न देतेऊं अंग।।१६८०।।
I know the true self, why should I join with others? Those who understand the true essence do not get entangled in falsehood.
श्रोता तो घर में नहीं, वक्ता बके सो वादि। श्रोता वक्ता एक घर, कथा कहावे आदि।।१६८१।।
The listener is not at home, while the speaker debates. The listener and speaker are within one house, yet the story remains untold.
संगति के सुख ऊपजे, कुसंगति के दुख होय। संसय खंडे जो जना, जो शब्द विवेकी होय।।१६८२।।
Happiness arises from good association, and misery from bad association. One who can discern this is wise and free from doubts.
मसो कागद छुवो नहीं, कलम धरो नहिं हाथ। चाहिहुं युग को महातम, कबीर मुखहिं जनाई बात।।१६८६।।
I do not touch paper or hold a pen in my hand. If you want to know the greatness of the ages, Kabir speaks it with his mouth.
सबकी उत्पति धरती, सब जीवन प्रतिपाल। धरती न जाने आप गुण, ऐसो गुरु विचार।।१६८८।।
The earth gives rise to all and sustains all life. The earth itself does not know its own virtues; thus is the wisdom of the Guru.
समुझे की गति एक है, जिहि समझे सब ठौर। कहहिं कबिर ये बीच के, कहै और की और।।१६९०।।
The essence of understanding is the same, no matter where it is perceived. Kabir says that the middle path is often considered different.
सांचा शब्द कबीर का, हृदया देखि विचारी। चित दे समुझे नहिं मोहि, कहत भए जुग चारि।।१६९३।।
The true word of Kabir, considered by the heart, has been said for ages. The mind does not understand it, though it has been spoken for four ages.
स्वर्ग पताल के बीच में, दुई तंबिरया विध्द। षट दर्शन संशय परे, लक्ष चौरासी सिद्ध।।१६९४।।
Between heaven and earth, there are two paths. Beyond the six philosophies and doubts, there is a goal of 84 perfections.
सावन केरा सेहरा, बूंद परे असमान। सारी दुनिया वैष्णव भया, गुरु नहिं लागा कान।।१६९७।।
In the monsoon's desert, even a drop is beyond the sky. The entire world has become Vaishnav, but no one listens to the Guru.
साहू चोर चीन्हे नहीं, अन्ध मति के हीन। पारख बिना बिना सहै, करि विचार ही भिन्न।।१६९८।।
The merchant does not recognize the thief, being blind in understanding. Without insight, even the expert suffers; all opinions are different.
साहू से भी चोरबा, चोरहु से भौ होत। तब जानिहुगे जीयरा, जबहिं परेगा तुज्झ।।१६९९।।
Even worse than the merchant is the thief, who creates fear from the thief. You will understand your own self when you face it directly.
सिंह अकेला बन रमे, पलक पलक करे ठौर। जैसे बन है आपना, तैसा बन है और।।१७०१।।
The lion enjoys solitude, finding a place at every step. Just as the forest is yours, so is the forest of others.
सुगना सेमर बेगि तजि, तेरी घने बिगूची पांख। ऐसा सेमर सेइया, जाके हृदय न आंख।।१७०३।।
The beautiful peacock forsakes the Seemar tree quickly; its dense feathers adorn you. Such a peacock is rare, who has the heart but not the eyes.
हंस बकु देख एक, रंग चरे हरियरे ताल। हंस क्षीर जानिये, बकु धरेंगे काल।।१७०६।।
The swan looks at the crane, the color of the green lake. Know the swan to be pure, while the crane will eventually meet its end.
हंसा के घट भीतरे, बसे सरोवर खोट। एकौ जीव ठौर नहिं लागा, रहा सो ओटहि ओट।।१७०८।।
Within the vessel of the swan resides the tainted lake. No living being finds a place; all remain hidden behind covers.
हंसा तु सुवरण वरण, कहां वरणों मैं तोहिं। तरुवर पाय पहेलहु, तबहि सराहौ तोहिं।।१७०९।।
O swan, you are of golden hue, where is the recognition for you? Only after climbing the tree will you be praised.
हंसा मोति बिकनिया, कंचन थार भराय। जो जाको मम न जाने, सो ताको काह कराय।।१७१०।।
The swan sells pearls and fills its golden dish. What can be done for someone who does not recognize its value?
हद चले ते मानवा, बेहद चले सो साधु। हद बेहद दोनों तजे, ताकी मती अगाधु।।१७१२।।
The limited man travels to the extent, the limitless goes beyond. Both limit and beyond are abandoned by the one with deep understanding.
हरि हीरा जन जौहरी, सबनि पसारी हाट। जब आए जन जौहरी, तब हीरा की साट।।१७१३।।
Hari is the jeweler of the precious gem, setting up shop in the market. When the true jeweler arrives, the gem is valued.
हीरा तहां न खोलिए, जहं कुंजरो की हाट। सहजे गांठो बांधिये, लगिए अपनी बाट।।१७१७।।
Do not reveal the diamond where elephants are traded. Securely bind it and follow your own path.
हृदय भीतर आरसी, मुख देखा नहिं जाय। मुख तो तब ही देखिए, जब दिल की दुविधा जाय।।१७१९।।
The mirror is within the heart, the face cannot be seen. The face is seen only when the heart's dilemma is resolved.
हरिया जांणे रूंषड़ा, उस पांणी के नेह। सूका काठ न जाणई, कबहू बूठा मेह।।१७२०।।
The green one knows the essence of water. The dry wood does not understand, it only knows the false rain.
पार ब्रह्म बूठा मोतियां, बांधी सिषरांह। सगुरां सगुरा चुणि लिया, चूक पड़ी निगुरांह।।१७२२।।
The supreme Brahman ties the pearls in a string. The true Guru selects the genuine pearls, the false ones are left out.
कहै कबीर कठोर कै, सबद न लागै सार। सुधबुध कै हिरदै भिदै, उपजि विवेक विचार।।१७२६।।
Kabir says, the harsh words do not contain essence. The heart pierced by wisdom produces discernment and contemplation.
सीतलता के कारणै, नाग बिलंबे आइ। रोम रोम विष भरि रह्मा, अमृत कहा समाइ।।१७२७।।
Due to coolness, the snake delays coming. The body is filled with poison, where is the nectar?
जालौं इहै बड़पणां, सरलै पेड़ि खजूरि। पंखी छांह न बीसवै, फल लागे ते दूरि।।१७२९।।
This is the arrogance of the date palm tree. The bird does not sit in its shade, the fruit is far away.
कबीर चंदन कै निड़ै, नींव भि चंदन होइ। बूड़ा बंस बड़ाइतां, यौं जिनि बूडे कोइ।।१७३१।।
Kabir says, sandalwood's nature is such that even its foundation is sandalwood. The old lineage is elevated, but who recognizes the old?
कबीर बहुत जतन करि कीजिये, सब फल जाय नसाय। कबीर संचै सूम धन, अन्त चोर लै जाय।।१७३२।।
Kabir says, despite much effort, all the fruits may be lost. Kabir advises to accumulate true wealth, for in the end, the thief takes it all.
कबीर औंधी खोपड़ी, कबहूं धापै नांहि। तीन लोक की सम्पदा, कब आवै घर मांहि।।१७३३।।
Kabir says, the upside-down skull never gets covered. The wealth of the three worlds, when will it come to one's home?
जोगी जंगम सेवड़ा, ज्ञानी गुनी अपार। षट दर्शन से क्या बने, एक लोभ की लार।।१७३५।।
The yogi, the wandering monk, and the wise with boundless virtues all are seekers. What does six philosophies achieve when driven by greed?
चोट सतांणी बिरह की, सब तन जरजर होइ। मारणहारा जांणिहै, कै जिहिं लागी सोइ।।१७४९।।
The wounds of separation cause enduring pain, making the whole body frail. Only the one who inflicts this pain understands its true nature.
कर कमाण सर सांधि करि, खैचि जु मारया मांहि। भीतरि भिद्या सुमार ह्व, जीवै कि जीवै नांहि।।१७५०।।
When the mind is drawn to the divine, it pulls away from worldly attachments. The inner wisdom illuminates, questioning whether the self truly exists.
जबहूं मारयया खैंचि करि, तब मैं पाई जांण। लागी चोट मरम्म की, गई कलेजा छांणि।।१७५१।।
When the mind is drawn to the divine, only then do I gain knowledge. The pain inflicted is deep, tearing apart the heart.
सब रग तंत रबाब तन, बिरह बजावै नित्त। और न कोई सुणि सकै, कै साई कै चित्त।।१७५५।।
Every vein and fiber of the body plays the tune of separation. No one else can hear it; it is only for the Lord’s own mind.
बिरहा बिरहा जिनि कहौ, बिरहा है सुलितान। जिह घटि बिरह न संचरै, सो घट सदा मसान।।१७५६।।
One who speaks of separation, speaks of it as a sovereign. The body in which separation does not reside is always a cremation ground.
हौं बिरहा की लाकड़ी, समझि समझि धूंधाउं। छूटि पड़ौं यों बिरह तैं, जे सारीही जलि जाउं।।१७७२।।
I am like a log of separation, searching for understanding. I would be free from this separation if I could burn completely.
सुखिया सब संसार है, खयै अरु सोवै। दुखिया दास कबीर है, जागै अरु रोवै।।१७८०।।
The entire world is happy, eating and sleeping. The unfortunate servant Kabir is awake and weeping.
कबीर तेज अनंत का, मानौं ऊगी सूरज सेणि। पति संगि जागी सूंदरी, कौतिग दीठा तेणि।।१७८१।।
Kabir says that the radiance of the infinite is like the rising sun. The bride who wakes up with her husband, has seen the grandeur of the divine.
अंतर कवल प्रकासिया, ब्रह्म वास तहां होइ। मन भवरा तहां लुबधिया, जांणैगा जन कोइ।।१७८६।।
The inner lotus shines with the presence of Brahma. The mind is captivated there; only a few understand this.
सायर नाहीं सीप बिन, स्वाति बूंद भी नाहिं। कबीर मोती नीपजै, सन्नि सिषर गढ़ मांहिं।।१७८७।।
Without the oyster, there are no pearls; without the Swati drop, no gems are formed. Kabir's pearls emerge from the deep abode of the sage.
घट माहैं औघट लह्या, औघट माहैं घाट। कहि कबीर परचा भया, गुरु दिखाई बाट।।१७८८।।
The reservoir is inside the pitcher, and the shore is within the reservoir. Kabir says the path is shown by the Guru.
सूर समांणौं चंद में, दहूं किया घर एक। मन का चिता तब भया, कछू पूरबला लेख।।१७८९।।
The sun and moon are one, both residing in the same house. The mind's fire then finds satisfaction; the old script is revealed.
हद छाड़ि बेहद गया, किया सुन्नि असनान। मुनि जन महल न पावई, तहां किया विश्राम।।१७९०।।
Leaving the finite, I reached the infinite, and took a bath in the void. The sage does not find a palace; there, I rested.
पिंजर प्रेम प्रकासिया, जाग्या जोग अनंत। संसा खूटा सुख भया, मिल्या पियारा कंत।।१७९२।।
The cage of love has revealed itself; infinite yoga has awakened. Doubt is eradicated and happiness is found in the beloved.
मन लागा मुनि सौं, गगन पहुंचा जाइ। देख्या चंदबिहूंणां चांदिणां, तहां अलख निरंजन राइ।।१७९४।।
The mind attached to the sage reaches the sky. There, the formless and transcendent is perceived beyond the moon and stars.
पंषि उड़ानीं गगन कं, उड़ी चढ़ी असमान। जिहं सर मंडल भेदिया, सो सर लागा कान।।१८००।।
The bird flew in the sky, soaring higher and higher. Where it broke through the sphere, it became its own boundary.
सुरति समांणी निरति मैं, अपजा माहै जाप। लेख समांणं अलेख मैं, यूं आपा मांहे आप।।१८०२।।
The awareness of the divine essence is equated with devotion. The written and unwritten knowledge is the same; the self is realized within.
आया था संसार मैं, देषण कौं बहु रूप। कहै कबीरा संत ही, पड़ि गया नजरि अनूप।।१८०३।।
I came into this world in many forms to teach. Kabir says that the true saint is seen as unique and unparalleled in vision.
चिति पाई मन थिर भया, सतगुर करी सहाइ। अनिन कथा तनि आचरी, हिरदै त्रिभुवन राइ।।१८०८।।
Upon gaining knowledge, the mind becomes stable. With the help of the True Guru, one practices the teachings, becoming the ruler of the three worlds within the heart.
हरि संगति सीतल भया, मिटा मोह की ताप। निस बासुरि सखनिध्य लह्या, जब अंतरि प्रकट्या आप।।१८०९।।
In the company of Hari (God), one becomes cool and the heat of attachment is removed. The night and the dawn are experienced when the inner self is revealed.
तन भीतरि मन मानियां, बाहरि कहा न जाइ। ज्वाला तै फिरि जल भया, बुझी बलंती लाइ।।१८१०।।
The mind and body are honored within, but cannot be described externally. The fire within turns to water and is extinguished by the process of contemplation.
तत पाया तन बीसरया, जब मनि धरिया ध्यान। तपनि गई सीतल भया, जब सुनि किया असनान।।१८११।।
The body was forgotten once the mind held meditation. Even the heat of austerity became cool, when the mind experienced the bath of contemplation.
जिनि पाया तिनि सुगह गह्या, रसनां लागी स्वादि। रतन निराला पाइया, जगत ढाल्या बादि।।१८१२।।
Those who have attained it, hold it with ease; it tastes sweet to the tongue. They have found the unique gem, having discarded the worldly attachment.
कबीर दिल स्याबति भया, पाया फल संभ्रथ्थ। सायर मांहि ढंढोलतां, हीरै पड़ि गया हथ्थ।।१८१३।।
Kabir’s heart became pure, and he received the fruit of spiritual wealth. Searching in the treasure chest, he found the gem in his own hand.
जब मैं था तब हरि नहीं, अब हरि हैं मैं नांहि। सब अंधियारा मिटि गया, जब दीपक देख्या मांहि।।१८१४।।
When I was there, Hari (God) was not; now that Hari is there, I am not. All darkness has vanished when I saw the light within.
जा कारणि मैं जाइ था, सोई पाई ठोर। सोई फिरि आपण भया, जासूं कहता और।।१८१६।।
The reason I went was to find a resting place. That same place turned out to be myself, though I was speaking of others.
कबीर देख्या एक अंग, महिमा कही न जाइ। तेज पुंज पारस धणीं, नैनूं रहा समाइ।।१८१७।।
Kabir saw a single limb, whose glory cannot be described. The radiance of the touchstone master pervades the eyes.
गगन गरजि अंमृत चवै, कदली कवल प्रकास। तहां कबीरा बंदिगी, कै कोई निज दास।।१८१९।।
The sky roars with the nectar of immortality, and the banana plant glows. There, Kabir’s devotion resides, where someone is the true servant.
देवल माहैं देहुरी, ति जेहै बिसतार। माहैं पाती मांहिं जल, माहैं पूजणहार।।१८२१।।
The temple is within the body, and it is vast. Within it is water and within it are worshippers.
अनहद बाजै नीझर झरै, उपजै ब्रह्म गियान। अबिगति अंतरि प्रगटै, लागै प्रेम धियान।।१८२२।।
The unstruck sound resonates and falls, and the knowledge of Brahma arises. The ineffable becomes apparent within, and love and contemplation arise.
कबीर कवल प्रकासिया, ऊग्या निर्मल सूर। निस अंधयारी मिटि गई, बाजे अनहद तूर।।१८२३।।
Kabir, the lotus is illuminated, the pure sun has risen. The darkness of the night has been dispelled, and the unstruck drum (Anhad) is playing.
आकासे मुखि औंधा कुवां, पाताले पनिहारि। ताका पांणी को हंसा पीवै, बिरला आदि विचारि।।१८२४।।
The sky is like an upside-down well, and the underworld is the water carrier. The swan of that water drinks it; few think deeply about this.
सिव सकती दिसि कौंण जु जोवै, पछिम दिसा उठे धूरि। जल मैं स्वंघ जु घर करै, मछली चढ़ खजूरि।।१८२५।।
Who sees the power of Shiva in the directions, dust rises in the west. The fish lives in water, but climbs the date palm.
अंमृत बरिसै हीरा निपजै, घंटा पड टकसाल। कबीर जलाहा भया पारषू, अनभै उतरया पार।।१८२६।।
Nectar rains down and diamonds are forged, the bell rings in the mint. Kabir became a torchbearer, transcending the mundane.
नैनां अंतरि आव तूं, ज्यूं हौं नैन झंपेउ। नां हौं देखौं और कूं, नां तुझ देखने देउं।।१८२९।।
You come within my eyes, as I shut them. I do not see anything else, nor do I allow you to be seen by others.
कबीर सुख कौं जाइ था, आग आया दुख। जाहु सुख घरि आपणैं, हम जाणौं अरु दुख।।१८३३।।
Kabir, where is happiness? Fire has come as sorrow. If happiness is at home, then we know it, and so is sorrow.
दोजग तो हम अंगिया, यह डर नाहीं मुझ। भिस्त न मेर चाहिये, बाझ पियारे तुझ।।१८३४।।
We are the garments of hell, but I have no fear of this. I do not desire any other; without you, my beloved.
जे वो एकै न जांणियां, तौ जाण्यां सब जांण। जे वो एकन जांणियां, तै सबहीं जांण अजांण।।१८३५।।
Those who do not know the One, know all knowledge as ignorance. Those who know the One, all are known as ignorant.
कबीर एक न जांणियां, तौ बहु जाण्यां क्या होइ। एक तैं सब होत है, सब तैं एक न होइ।।१८३६।।
If one does not know the One, what can knowing many achieve? From the One comes all, yet all cannot be the One.
मन प्रतीति न प्रेम रस, नां इस तन मैं ढंग। क्या जाणौं उस पीव सूं, कैसे रहसी रंग।।१८४३।।
The mind does not grasp the essence of love, nor is there a method in this body. How can we know the true color of the beloved?
करता करै बहुत गुंण, औगुंण कोई नांहि। जे दिल खोजौं आपणीं, तौ सब औगुण मुझ मांहि।।१८५८।।
The Creator possesses countless virtues, and no flaws exist. If I search my heart, I find all flaws within me.
राम नाम सब कोई कहै, कहिबे बहुत विचार। सोई राम सती कहै, सोई कौतिग हार।।१८६३।।
Everyone utters the name of Ram, but few understand its true meaning. Only the true devotee who understands, wins the real victory.
आगि कह्यां दाझै नहीं, जे नहीं चंपै पाइ। जब लग भेद न जांणिये, राम कह्या तौ काइ।।१८६४।।
Fire won't burn just by saying 'fire' if it's not touched. Similarly, just saying 'Ram' is useless until you understand its essence.
कबीर सोचि विचरिया, दूजा कोई नांहि। आपा पर जब चीन्हिया, तब उलटि समाना मांहि।।१८६५।।
Kabir reflects and finds there is no one else. When he realizes the self, he merges back into the source.
नौ मण सूत अलूझिया, कबीर घर घर बारि। तिनि सुलझाया बापुड़े, जिनि जाणीं भगति मुरारि।।१८६७।।
Nine tons of thread are tangled, and the whole household is in turmoil. Only those who understand the devotion to the Lord can untangle it.
सोई आशिष सोई बैयन, जन जू जू बांचवंत। कोई एक मेलै लवणि, अमी रसाइण हुंत।।१८६९।।
Blessings and curses are the same, those who understand realize their essence. When combined with wisdom, even poison turns into nectar.
हरि मोती की माल है, पोई कांच तागि। जतन करि झंटा घंणा, टूटेगी कहूं लागि।।१८७०।।
The necklace of the Lord's pearls is strung on a fragile thread of glass. No matter how carefully you handle it, it may break at any time.
चिंतामणि मन में बसै, सोई चित मैं आणि। बिन चिंता चिंता करै, इहैं प्रभु की बाणि।।१८७३।।
The philosopher's stone resides in the mind, bringing forth whatever is desired. Worry not, for the Lord’s will takes care of everything.
मांनि महातम प्रेम रस, गरवातण गुण नेह। ए सबही अह लागया, जबहिं कह्या कुछ देह।।१८८१।।
Honor, greatness, love, and virtue—all are lost when one speaks of receiving something.
पांडल पंजर मन भंवर, अरथ अनूपम बास। राम नाम सींच्या अंमी, फल लागा बेसास।।१८८३।।
The hollow cage of the mind is like a bee, seeking the unparalleled fragrance. Watered by Ram’s name, it bears a bountiful harvest.
पासि विनंठा कपड़ा, कदे सुरांग न होइ। कबीर त्याग्या ग्यान करि, कनक कामनी दोई।।१८९०।।
A cloth that is well-folded will not develop any wrinkles. Kabir says, after gaining true knowledge, I have renounced both wealth and women.
दावै दाझण होत है, निरदावै निरसंक। जे नर निरदावै रहैं, ते गिणैं इंद्र को रंक।।१८९५।।
Those who are attached to desires suffer, while those without desires remain fearless. Even Indra, the king of gods, seems like a pauper compared to one who is detached.
एक खड़े ही लहैं, और खड़ा बिललाइ। साईं मेरा सुलषना, सूता देइ जगाइ।।१८९८।।
One person receives everything while standing still, another cries out in desperation. My Lord is just; He awakens even those who are asleep.
अबरन कौं का बरनिये, मोपै लख्या न जाइ। अपना बाना बाहिया, कहि-कहि थाके माइ।।१९००।।
How can I describe the indescribable? I cannot express it. The mother who gave me birth is exhausted from trying to explain.
कबीर साई सूरिवां, मन सूं मांडे झूझ। पंच पयादा पाड़ि ले, दूरि करै सब दूज।।१९०९।।
Kabir says, one who is devoted to the Lord, fights with the mind. Removing the five enemies, one can be free from all others.
सूरैं सार संबाहिया, पहरया सहज संजोग। अब कै ग्यांन गयंद चढ़ि, खेत पड़न का जोग।।१९१३।।
The essence of the sun is carried by the seasons, which naturally connect. Now with the rise of knowledge, the field is ready for sowing.
ऊंचा विरष अकासि फल, पंषरू मूए झूर। बहुत सयांने पचि रहे, फल निरमल परि दूरि।।१९२२।।
The high fruit of the sky is enjoyed by the birds who have passed away. Many wise people are still pondering, the pure fruit remains distant.
हौं तोहि पूछौं हे सखी, जीवत क्यूं न मराइ। मूंवा पीछे सत करै, जीवत क्यूं न कराइ।।१९२९।।
I ask you, my friend, why does one not die while living? The dead can be rectified after death, but why is it not rectified while living?
कबीर हरि सबकूं भजै, हरि कूं भजै न कोइ। जब लग आस सरीर की, तब लग दास न होइ।।१९३१।।
Kabir says, everyone worships the Lord, but no one worships the Lord truly. As long as there is attachment to the body, one cannot be a true servant.
कस्तूरी कुंडलि बसै, मृग ढूढै बन मांहि। ऐसै घटि घटि राम हैं, दुनियां देखै नांहि।।१९३३।।
The musk deer has musk in its navel but searches for it in the forest. Similarly, Ram resides within every being, yet the world fails to recognize this.
सो सांई तन मैं बसै, भ्रम्यों न जाण तास। कस्तूरी के मृग ज्यूं, फिर फिर सूधैं घास।।१९३५।।
The Divine resides within the body, but the deluded do not recognize this. Just like the musk deer keeps searching for musk in the grass, they search outside for what is within.
घटि बधि कहीं न देखिए, ब्रह्म रह्या भरपूरि। आप पिछांणै बहिरा, नेड़ा की थैं दूरि।।१९३७।।
Do not look elsewhere for the Divine, for Brahman is present everywhere. If you are blind to it, you are far from it even when it is near.
राम नाम तिहूं लोक मैं, सकलहु रह्या भरपूरि। यह चतुराई जाहु जलि, खोजत डोलैं दूरि।।१९४०।।
The name of Ram is present in all three worlds, pervading everything. Such cleverness is of no use if one is wandering in search of it far away.
मारया है जो मरैगा, बिर सर थोथी भालि। पड्या पुकारै ब्रिछ तरि, आजि मरै कै काल्हि।।१९४२।।
One who is killed is of no value; the wise one knows this. The tree that is struck, still calls out to be saved, whether it dies today or tomorrow.
हिरदा भीतरि दौं बलै, धूंवां प्रगट न होइ। जाकै लागी सो लखै, कै जिहि लाई सोइ।।१९४३।।
The fire inside the heart remains hidden, not revealed outwardly. Only those who experience it know it, just as the smoke reveals the fire to those who can perceive it.
अगनि जू लागि नीर मैं, कंदू जलिया झारि। उतर दषिण के पंडिता, रहे बिचारि बिचारि।।१९४५।।
Fire has come into the water, and the reed is burning in the embers. The scholars of the south are still pondering and reflecting.
पाणीं माहै प्रजली, भई अप्रबल आगि। बहती सलिता रहि गई, मंछ रहे जल त्यागि।।१९४९।।
Water that was once on fire has become a fierce blaze. The flowing stream remains, but the fish have abandoned the water.
हम देखत जग जात है, जग देखत हम जांह। ऐसा कोई ना मिले, पकड़ि छुड़ावे बांह।।१९७०।।
We observe the world as it moves, and the world observes us as we go. No one is found who can grasp and release the arm.
पाइ पदारथ पेलि करि, कंकर लीया हाथि। जोड़ी बिछुटी हंस की, पड्या बंगा कै साथि।।१९७५।।
Having obtained the treasure, I took a pebble in my hand. The pair of separated swans found it and rested by the riverbank.
चंदन की कुटकी भली, नां बंबुर को अवरांऊं। वैसनो की छपरी भलो, नां साषत का बड गाउं।।१९८०।।
A small piece of sandalwood is better than a thousand bumblebees. A small hut of saints is better than a large village of scholars.
कबीर धनि ते सुंदरी, जिन जाया बैसनौं पूत। राम सुमरि नरिभै हुवा, सब जग गया अऊत।।१९८५।।
Kabir says, the rich and beautiful woman, who has sons and wealth, has attained true greatness by remembering Ram. All the world is in awe of her.
साषत बांभण मति मिलै, बैसनौं मिलै चंडाल। अंकमाल दे भेटिये, मांनों मिले गोपाल।।१९८७।।
Wisdom is found with the Brahmins, and the lower castes are met with outcasts. When we meet the divine, it is like meeting Gopal (Krishna).
कबीर हरि का भावता, झीणां पंजर तास। रैणि न आवै नींदड़ी, अंगि न चढ़ई मास।।१९९१।।
Kabir says, the one who feels the presence of Hari, even a thin cover is enough for him. He does not find sleep at night, and the body does not feel the passage of time.
जिन्य कुछ जाण्या नहीं तिन्ह, सुख नींदड़ी बिहाइ। भैर अबूझी बूझिया, पूरी पड़ी बलाइ।।१९९३।।
Those who do not know anything, find comfort and sleep. The incomprehensible fear is dispelled, and they remain completely absorbed in bliss.
जांण भगत का नित मरण, अणजाणे का राज। सर अपसर समझै नहीं, पेट भरण सूं काज।।१९९४।।
The devotee is constantly dying in knowledge, while the ignorant seek comfort. They do not understand the essence of the self and are only concerned with fulfilling their basic needs.
जिहि हिरदै हरि आइया, सो क्यूं छांनां होइ। जतन जतन करि दाबिए, तऊ उजाला सोइ।।२००३।।
When the divine enters the heart, why should there be any obscurity? Even with careful effort, the light is still that which is true.
कबीर खालिक जागिया, और न जागै कोइ। कै जागे बिनसई विष भरया, कै दास बंदगी होइ।।२००६।।
Kabir has awakened to the Creator, and no one else has. Whoever awakens with poison filled within, becomes a servant of devotion.
कबीर चलया जाइ था, आगैं मिलया खुदाइ। मीरां मुझ सौं यौं कह्या, किनि फुरमाई गाइ।।२००७।।
Kabir went on his way, and ahead he met the divine. Mirabai spoke of me, but what did she say?
कबीर संगति साधु की, बेगि करीजैं जाइ। दुरमति दुरि गंवाइसी, देसी सुमति बताइ।।२००९।।
The company of saints swiftly removes ignorance. It dispels foolishness and imparts true wisdom.
कबीर चंदन का बिड़ा, बैठ्या आक पलास। आप सरीखे करि लिए, जे होते उन पास।।२०१४।।
Kabir likens himself to a piece of sandalwood sitting among the arjun and palash trees. Those who are like him would recognize this resemblance.
जांनि बूझि सांचहि तजै, करै झूठ सूं नेहु। ताको संगति राम जी, सुपिनै ही जिनि देहु।।२०१६।।
One who understands and abandons falsehood while engaging in truth. That person will have the company of Ram, even in dreams.
पांहण केरा पूतला, करि पूजैं करतार। इही भरोसै जे रहे, ते बूड़े काली धार।।२०२१।।
Worshipping a stone idol, relying on it, is like trusting a broken, old, and worn-out piece.
काजल केरी कोठरी, मसि के कर्म कपाट। पाहनि बोई पृथमी, पंडित पाड़ी बाट।।२०२२।।
The room of kajal (kohl) is the place of actions with ink. The cloth is the first to be worn, and the scholar shows the way.
मन मथुरा दिल द्वारिका, काया कासी जांणि। दसवा द्वार देहुरा, तामै जोति पिछांणि।।२०२९।।
The mind is in Mathura, the heart in Dwarka, and the body knows Kashi. The tenth door is the temple where the light is known.
कबीर दुनिया देहुरै, सीस नवांवण जाइ। हिरदा भीतर हरि बसै, तूं ताही सौं ल्यौं लाइ।।२०३०।।
Kabir says that worshipping in the external world is futile. The Lord resides within the heart, so seek Him there.
आगे-आगे दौ जलै, पीछे हरिया होइ। बलिहारी ता बिरष की, जड़ काट्यां फल होइ।।२०३२।।
Ahead, it burns, while behind it is green. Blessed is the tree which, when its root is cut, still bears fruit.
जे काटौं तै डहडही, सींचौं तौ कुमिलाइ। इस गुणवंती बेलि का, कछु गुंण कह्यां न जाइ।।२०३३।।
If you cut it, it will burn; if you water it, it will wither. The qualities of this fruitful vine are beyond description.
सींध भइ तब का भया, चहूं दिसि फूटी बास। अजहूं बीज अंकूर है, भीऊगण की आस।।२०३६।।
When the seed is ripe, it spreads its fragrance in all directions. Even now, the seed has sprouted, showing the hope of a new beginning.
पर नारी का राचणौं, जिसी ल्हसण की षांनि। षूणैं बैसि रषाइए, परगट होइ दिवानि।।२०४२।।
The creation of a woman is like the excitement of a festival. When the truth is revealed, it becomes evident like a festival day.
नारी सेती नेह, बुधि विवेक सबही डरै। कांइ गमावै देह, कारिज कोई नां सरे।।२०४४।।
Attachment to a woman causes fear in wisdom and intellect. Such attachment leads to the loss of one’s body and does not accomplish any purpose.
नारी नसाबैं नीति सुख, जा नर पासैं होइ। भगति मुकति निज ग्यान मैं, पैसि न सकई कोइ।।२०४५।।
The virtue and happiness that come from a woman are temporary. True devotion and liberation come from one’s own knowledge and cannot be attained through others.
विषै विलंबी आत्मां, ताका मजकण खाया सोधि। ग्यांन अंकून न ऊगई, भावै निज प्रमोधि।।२०५४।।
The soul indulged in poison, finds its joy in the feast of senses. Knowledge doesn't sprout in such a mind, they revel in their own delusion.
ग्यांनी तो नींडर भया, मांजै नांहीं संक। इंद्री केरे बसि पड़या, भूंचौं विषै निसंक।।२०६०।।
The wise become fearless, free from doubt. But those under the sway of senses, are fearless in worldly poison.
ग्यांनी मूल गंवाइया, आपण भये करंता। ताथै संसारी भला, मन मैं रहै डरंता।।२०६१।।
The wise lose their root, becoming proud of their knowledge. Better is the worldly man who lives in fear within his mind.
जीव बिलंब्या जीव सौं, अलख न लखिया जाइ। गोबिंद मिलै न झल बुझैं, रही बुझाइ बुझाइ।।२०६२।।
The soul, delayed by life, fails to perceive the invisible. Govind cannot be found by shallow intellect, it's a pursuit of enlightenment.
चारिउ बेद पढ़ाइ करि, हरि सूं न लाया हेत। बालि कबीरा ले गया, पंडित ढूंढै खत।।२०६९।।
Even after reading all four Vedas, they did not develop love for Hari. Kabir took the real wealth, while the scholar is left searching for the script.
ब्रांह्मण गुरु जगत का, साधू का गुरू नाहिं। उरझि पुरझि करि मरि रह्या, चारिउं बेदां माहिं।।२०७०।।
The Brahmin is the world's teacher, but not the guru of a saint. He dies entangled in the complexities of the four Vedas.
पंडित सेती कहि रह्या, भीतरि भेद्या नाहिं। फिरि प्रमोधै आन कौं, आपण समझै नाहिं।।२०७३।।
The scholar speaks outwardly but has not pierced within. He misleads others but does not understand himself.
चित चेतन ताजी करै, लौ की करैं लगाम। शब्द गुरु का ताजना, पहुंचै संत सुजान।।२०८६।।
The mind becomes alert when the reins of desire are tightened. By following the words of the Guru, a wise saint reaches the ultimate goal.
हरि घोडा ब्रह्मा कडी, बसाय पीठि पलान। चांद सुरज दोउ पायडा, चढसी संत सूजान।।२०८७।।
The horse of Hari is saddled with Brahma's knowledge. With the moon and sun as stirrups, the wise saint mounts it.
साधु सती और शूरमां, ज्ञानी औ गजदंत। ऐते निकसि न बाहुरैं, जो युग जाहिं अनंत।।२०८९।।
Saints, virtuous ones, warriors, the wise, and elephants with tusks. Once they leave, they never return, even across endless ages.
साधु सती और शूरमां, इनकी बात अगाध। आशा छोडे देहकी, तिनमें अधिका साध।।२०९५।।
The words of saints, virtuous ones, and warriors are profound. Those who renounce bodily desires find greater fulfillment in them.
शूर सनाह न पहरई, मरता नहीं डराय। कायर भाजै पीठि दै, शूर मुंडीमुंह खाय।।२१०७।।
A brave person does not wear armor, nor does he fear death. The coward turns his back and runs; the brave face challenges head-on.
शूरा लरै कमन्द ह्वै, धरसों शीहा उतारि। कहै कबीरा मारा मुआ, कहै जो मारहिं मारि।।२११६।।
The brave fight with courage, discarding all fear. Kabir says, whether one is killed or kills, it's the same for those who fight.
बिन पाऊं का पंथ है, मंझि शहर अस्थान। बिकट बाट औघट घनां, पहुंच सन्त सुजान।।२११८।।
Without feet, the path is difficult, whether in a city or a remote place. In treacherous paths and dense forests, only a wise saint can reach.
पंच असमाना जब लिया, तब रन धसिया शूर। दिल सौंपा शिर उॅबरा, मुजरा राम हजूर।।२११९।।
When the five elements are mastered, the battlefield becomes a place for the brave. One offers their heart and head, and the divine Ram is pleased.
ज्ञान कामना लौ गुनां, तन तरकस मन तीर। भलका बहै है सारका, मारै हदफ कबीर।।२१३६।।
Knowledge is the fire of desire, the body is the quiver and the mind is the arrow. True value flows from this, says Kabir, aiming at the target.
कठिन कमान कबीर की, पड़ी रहै मैदान। केता योद्धा पचि गया, खैंचे संत सुजान।२१३७।।
The bow of Kabir is tough, remaining on the field. Many warriors have perished, while the wise and learned continue to persevere.
बांकी तेग कबीर की, अनी परै द्वै टूक। मारे मीर महाबली, ऐसी मूठि अचूक।।२१३८।।
The remaining edge of Kabir's sword is sharp and cuts in two. It strikes like a mighty blow, an unerring blade.
कबिरा तोरा मान गढ, लूटी पांचों खान। ज्ञान कुहाड़ी कर्म बन, काटि किया मैदान।।२१४०।।
Kabir's honor is like a fortress, plundered by five enemies. Knowledge is the axe and action is the field, cutting away the obstacles.
घटी बढी जानै नहीं, मनमें राखे जीत। गाडर लडै गयन्दसा, देखो उलटी रीत।।२१४६।।
One who does not know the ups and downs, keeps victory in the mind. The hypocrite fights with pride, and observes a reversed way.
अचर रचै चर पर रहै, मरै न चारै जाय। बारह मास बिलोधनां, घूूमे एकै भाय।।२१५०।।
The eternal is present on the perishable, it does not die nor depart. For twelve months, it remains hidden, roaming with a single appearance.
चंदन गया विदेसड, सब कोई कहै पलास। ज्यों ज्यों चूल्हे झांकिया, त्यों त्यों अधिकी बास।।२१५१।।
Sandalwood went abroad, and everyone called it a Palash. The more it is seen in the kitchen, the more it emits fragrance.
हंसा तो महाराणा का, आया थलियां माहिं। बगुला करि करि मारिया, मरम जो जानै नाहिं।।२१५५।।
The swan is of the great king, it has come to the field. The crane kills one by one, not knowing the essence.
पायो पर पायो नहीं, हीरा हड्डी मार। कहे कबीर योंही गयो, परखे बिना गंवार।।२१५८।।
Found a jewel but did not find it; it was a bone hit. Says Kabir, thus went, without discerning the fool.
कबिर चुनता कन फिरै, हीरा पाया बाट। ताको मरम न जानिया, ले खलि खाई हाट।।२१५९।।
Kabir picks grains, found a jewel on the path. Not knowing its worth, he took it to the market.
हिरदै हीरा ऊपजै, नाभि कमल के बीच। जो कबहूं हीरा लखै, तो कदे न आवै मीच।।२१६१।।
The jewel arises in the heart, between the lotus of the navel. If someone ever perceives the jewel, they will never face any misfortune.
हीरा हरि को नाम है, हिरदै भीतर देख। बाहर भीतर भरि रहा, ऐसा आप अलेख।।२१६२।।
The jewel is the name of the Lord; look within the heart. It fills both inside and outside, this is the true sign.
बाद बके दमजात है, सरति निरति लै बोल। नित प्रति हीरा शब्द का, गाहक आगै खोल।।२१६३।।
After the crow's call, the silence is heard, speaking with the flow. Every day the jewel of words, opens for the seeker.
मान उनमान तोलिये, शब्द का मोल न तोल। मूरख लोग न जानहीं, आपा खोयो बोल।।२१६४।।
Weigh honor and dishonor, but do not weigh the value of words. Foolish people do not understand, and lose themselves in words.
कबिरा गदरी बीखरी, सौदा गया बिकाय। खोटा बांधा गांठरी, खरा लिया नहिं मोल।।२१६५।।
Kabir’s tattered cloth, the deal has been sold. The fake is tied with a knot, but the genuine is not bought.
राम रतन धन पाइकै, गांठ बांधि ना खोल। नहीं पटन नहिं पारखी, नहिं ग्राहक नहिं मोल।।२१६६।।
The jewel of Ram’s name is obtained, but the knot is not undone. There are no experts, no buyers, no value.
राम रतन धन मुक्ति में, खान खुली घट माहिं। सेतमेतही देतहों, ग्रोहक कोई नाहिं।।२१६७।।
The jewel of Ram’s name is in liberation, the treasure is open within the vessel. It is given with conditions, but there is no buyer.
पियासों परिचय नहीं, दादा रहि गा दूर। लल्ला लौ लागी रहै, नन्ना सदा हजूर।।२१६९।।
The thirsty do not recognize, the elder remains distant. The one in need remains, the little one always present.
कबिरा खांडहि छांडि कै, कांकर चुनि चुनि खाय। रत्न गंवाया रेत में, फिर पाछै पछिताय।।२१७०।।
Kabir, leaving sugar and eating pebbles, has wasted the gem in the sand, and later regrets.
सागर में मानिक बसै, चीन्हत नाहीं कोय। या मानिक कों सो लखे, जाको गुरुगम होय।।२१७३।।
The jewel resides in the ocean, but no one recognizes it. Only those with true understanding can recognize the jewel.
अनजाने का कूकना, कूकर कासा शोर। ज्यों अंधियारी रैन में, साह न चीन्हें चोर।।२१७४।।
The barking of the unknown is like the noise of a dog. In the dark night, even thieves are not recognized.
मैं भारन सब ज्ञानिया, कथत बकत दिन जाय। साह चोर चीन्है नहीं, कागा हंस लगाय।।२१७५।।
I bear all knowledge, and the talk of the day goes on. The thief is not recognized, but the crow is mistaken for a swan.
हंस काग की पारिखा, सतगुरु दई बताय। हंसा तो मोती चुगैं, काग नरक परिजाय।।२१७६।।
The swan and the crow are judged by the Satguru. The swan picks pearls, while the crow ends up in hell.
अपने अपने सिर पर, सबहिन लीन्हा मानि। हरि की बात दुर्लभ अहै, काह परी न जानि।।२१७७।।
Everyone considers their own head as the most valuable. The teachings of Hari are rare, yet no one understands their significance.
बिनवत हूं कर जोरि कै, सुनु गुरु कृपा निधान। संतन में सुख दीजिये, दया गरीबी ज्ञान।।२१७८।।
I humbly plead with folded hands, listen, O treasure of grace. Grant me peace among saints, and the knowledge of compassion and poverty.
सांई केरा बहत गुन, औगन कोई नाहिं। जो दिल खोजों आपना, तो सब औगन मुझ माहिं।।२१९१।।
The Lord has many virtues and no faults. But when I search my own heart, I find only faults within myself.
भवसागर भारी भया, गहरा अगम अथाह। तुम दयाल दाया करो, तब पाऊं कछु थाह।।२२०२।।
The ocean of existence is deep, unfathomable, and vast. O Merciful One, show your mercy, so that I may find some depth.
सब काहू का लीजिये, सांचा शब्द निहार। पक्षपात ना कीजिये, कहै कबीर बिचार।।२२०९।।
Take the essence from all; do not focus on superficial words. Do not show partiality, Kabir advises.
सबै हमारे एकहैं, जो सुमिरै हरि नाम।। वस्तु लही पहिचान कै, बासन सों क्या काम।।२२१५।।
All are one who remembers the name of Hari. What use is identifying objects, when you have the essence of devotion?
कांसे ऊपर बीजुरी, परै अचानक आय। तात निर्भय ठीकरा, सतगुरु दिया बताय।।२२१६।।
A lightning strikes on brass suddenly. The fearless guidance was shown by the true Guru.
हद्द छांडि बेहद गया, लिया ठीकरा हाथ। भया भिखारी दीन का, दर्शन भया सनाथ।।२२१७।।
Leaving the limited, one attains the infinite, holding a bowl. The beggar became humble, and the vision became pure.
निरन्तर बासी निरमला, शून स्थूल सो निनार। पूरब गंगा पश्चिम बहावै, पेखे बहु उजियार।।२२२०।।
The constant, pure essence is beyond form, like the river Ganga flowing from east to west, bringing immense light.
हदमें पीव न पाइये, बेहद में भरपूर। हद बेहद की गम लखै, तासौं पीव हजूर।।२२२२।।
One cannot find the nectar within limits; it is abundant in the infinite. Understanding the essence of limits and the infinite reveals this nectar.
हद में बैठा कथन है, बेहद की गम नाहिं। बेहद की गम होयगी, तब कछु कथना काहि।।२२२७।।
Sitting within limits, one cannot understand the infinite. Understanding the infinite comes only when one transcends these limits.
कबिरा हद के जीव सों, हित करि मुखै न बोल। जो राचे बेहद सों, तिनसों अन्तर खोल।।२२२८।।
Kabir does not speak openly with those bound by limits. To those who are in tune with the infinite, he reveals the inner truth.
हदिया सेतो हद रहो, बेहदिया बेहद। जो जैसा तहा रोगिया, तहा तैसी औषद।।२२२९।।
The limited person remains within limits, while the infinite person remains infinite. Just as the medicine is suited to the disease, so is the spiritual solution to the condition.
हद में रहैं सो मानवी, बेहद रहै सो साध। हद बेहद दोनों तजैं, तिनका मता अगाध।।२२३०।।
One who remains within limits is human, while one who dwells in the infinite is a sage. To transcend both limits and the infinite is to possess profound understanding.
अगह गह अकह कहै, अनभेदा भेद लहाइ। अनभै बाणी आगम की, लेगई संग लगाइ।।२२३२।।
The unspoken speaks the unspeakable, and the undifferentiated reveals the hidden distinctions. The unspoken words of the scriptures align with the ultimate truth.
अंग अठोत्तरसौ कहा, परम पुरुष उपदेश। कहै कबीर अब हरि मिलै, मानौं साख संदेश।।२२३४।।
The 48th verse speaks of divine instructions. Kabir says, when you meet Hari (God), it should be taken as a direct message.
विष्ठा का चौका दिया, हांडी सीझै हाड। छूति बचवै चास की, तिनहूं का गुरु राड।।२२४७।।
They cook in a place filled with excrement, and bones boil in the pot. The residue of buttermilk remains untainted, even such people have a guru who is a rogue.
जीव हनै हिंसा करै, प्रगट पाप सिर होय। पाप सबै जो देखिया, पुन्य न देखा कोय।।२२४८।।
Killing living beings and committing violence are obvious sins. When I looked around, I saw only sins, and no one engaged in virtuous deeds.
काटि कटि जबह करै, या पाप संग का भेस। निश्च राम न जानही, कहै कबीर संदेस।।२२५२।।
Those who butcher and commit sacrifices, adopting the guise of sin, Will certainly not know Ram, says Kabir's message.
पीर सबन को एकसी, मूरख जानैं नाहिं। अपना गला कटायक, भिश्त बसै क्यों नाहिं।।२२५८।।
The saint is the same for all, but the ignorant do not understand. They cut their own throats, yet why don't they go to heaven?
