If someone sows thorns for you, sow flowers for them. You will get flowers, but they will get thorns.
गारी ही सों ऊपजै, कलह, कष्ट और मींच। हारि चले सो साधु है, लागि चले सो नीच।।१७।।
From harsh words arise conflict, suffering, and pain. The one who steps back is a saint, the one who retaliates is lowly.
दान दिए धन ना घटे, नदी न घटे नीर। अपनी आँखों देख लो, यूँ क्या कहे कबीर।।१८।।
Giving away wealth does not decrease it, just as water does not decrease in a river. See this with your own eyes, says Kabir.
कुटिल वचन सबसे बुरा, जारि करै तन हार। साधु वचन जल रूप है, बरसे अमृत धार।।२१।।
Harsh words are the worst; they burn the body and soul. The words of a saint are like water, pouring down as nectar.
मैं रोऊँ जब जगत को, मोको रोवे न कोय। मोको रोवै सोचकर, जो शब्द बोए सो होय।।२२।।
I cry for the world, but no one cries for me. The world should think about what seeds of words it has sown.
दया-भाव हृदय नहीं, ज्ञान थके बेहद। ते नर नरक ही जाएंगे, सुनि-सुनि साखी-शब्द।।५३।।
Without a compassionate heart, knowledge is of no use. Those who lack compassion will ultimately go to hell, despite hearing many teachings.
दया कौन पर कीजिए, का पर निर्दय होय। सांई के सब जीव हैं, कीरी-कुंजर दोय।।५४।।
Who should you show compassion to? It should be shown to all, for all creatures are the same, be they an ant or an elephant.
सुमिरन की सुबिझ करो, ज्यों गागर पनिहार। होले-होले सुरत में, कहैं कबीर विचार।।७३।।
Just as a water-bearer carefully handles a pitcher, keep your mind gently focused on remembrance. Kabir speaks of this understanding.
भज दीना कहूँ और ही, तन साधुन के संग। कहैं कबीर कारी गजी, कैसे लागे रंग।।१३६।।
Worship the poor and be in the company of saints. Kabir says, how can the color of a blacksmith be perceived?
क्षमा बड़े न को उचित है, छोटे को उत्पात। कहा विष्णु का घटि गया, जो भुगु मारीलात।।१४७।।
Forgiveness is not appropriate for the mighty, but for the weak it causes chaos. Where did Vishnu’s vessel go, for it is bound to suffer the consequences.
परनारी का राचणौ, जिसकी लहसण की खानि। खूणैं बेसिर खाइय, परगट होइ दिवानि।।१६६।।
The conduct of a woman is compared to a container of garlic. One who eats without consideration of others, reveals their true nature.
एसी बाणी बोलिये, मन का आपा खोइ। औरन को सीतल करै, आपौ सीतल होइ।।२४२।।
Speak such words that dissolve the ego of the mind. If you make others calm, you too will become calm.
खूंदन तौ धरती सहै, बाढ़ सहै बनराइ। कुसबद तौ हरिजन सहै, दूजै सह्या न जाइ।।२४८।।
The earth can bear the flooding, the forest can withstand the floods. But the bad words are unbearable for the righteous; they cannot tolerate them.
साधु बिरछ सतज्ञान फल, शीतल शब्द विचार। जग में होते साधु नहिं, जर भरता संसार।।३१९।।
The saint is like a tree bearing the fruit of true knowledge, offering cool and soothing words. Without saints in the world, the world remains filled with ignorance.
साधु बड़े परमारथी, शीतल जिनके अंग। तपन बुझावै ओर की, देदे अपनो रंग।।३२०।।
Saints are great benefactors, whose bodies are cool and calm. They extinguish the heat of worldly desires and give their own hue.
छाजन भोजन प्रीति सो, दीजै साधु बुलाय। जीवन जस है जगन में, अन्त परम पद पाय।।३२२।।
Offer food and affection to the saint who is invited. Life is like a journey, and in the end, one attains the supreme state.
सरवर तरवर सन्त जन, चौथा बरसे मेह। परमारथ के कारने, चारों धारी देह।।३२३।।
The saints are like the lake and trees, where rain falls in abundance. For the sake of benevolence, they sustain the four aspects of the body.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, दुखै दुखावै नाहिं। पान फूल छेड़े नहीं, बसै बगीचा माहिं।।३३२।।
A saint should be such that he does not cause pain to others. He does not disturb flowers and fruits, but resides in the garden.
साधू जन सब में रमैं, दुख न काहू देहि। अपने मत गाड़ा रहै, साधुन का मत येहि।।३३६।।
The saint dwells in everyone and causes no harm to anyone. He sticks to his own belief, and this is the belief of the saints.
सदा कृपालु दु:ख परिहरन, बैर भाव नहिं दोय। छिमा ज्ञान सत भाखही, सिंह रहित तु होय।।३४०।।
Always compassionate and removing sorrows, free from feelings of enmity. Forgiveness and wisdom are his speech, without pride like a lion.
दया गरीबी बन्दगी, समता शील सुभाव। येते लक्षण साधु के, कहैं कबीर सतभाव।।३५३।।
Compassion, humility, devotion, equality, and good nature—these are the qualities of a saint, says Kabir.
साधु-ऐसा चाहिए, जाका पूरा मंग। विपत्ति पड़े छाड़ै नहीं, चढ़े चौगुना रंग।।३६०।।
A saint should be one who fulfills all requests and does not abandon even in adversity. Such a saint's presence enriches and multiplies.
तरुवर जड़ से काटिया, जबै सम्हारो जहाज। तारै पर बोरे नहीं, बाँह गहे की लाज।।३९६।।
If a tree is cut at its root, the ship cannot be controlled. There is no shame in clinging to the mast of the ship.
दया और धरम का ध्वजा, धीरजवान प्रमान। सन्तोषी सुख दायका, सेवक परम सुजान।।४०९।।
The flag of compassion and righteousness is flown by the patient. The contented and wise servant is the giver of happiness.
दुख सुख एक समान है, हरष शोक नहिं व्याप। उपकारी निहकामता, उपजै छोह न ताप।।५७६।।
Pain and pleasure are the same, there is no attachment to joy or sorrow. The one who is truly compassionate remains unaffected by these emotions and does not suffer from heat or cold.
साधु बड़े परमारथी, धन ज्यों बरसे आय। तपन बुझावैं और की, अपनो पारस लाय।।५७७।।
The true saint is dedicated to the welfare of others, like rain that falls to nourish the earth. He can extinguish the heat and bring transformation just like the philosopher's stone.
साधु जन सब में रमैं, दुख न काहू देहि। अपने मत गाढ़ा रहै, साधुन का मय येहि।।५८१।।
A saint resides in everyone and does not cause suffering to anyone. He remains steadfast in his beliefs and lives in the essence of the saint.
कोई आवै भाव लै, कोई अभाव ले आव। साधु दाऊ को पोषते, भाव न गिनै अभाव।।५८९।।
Some come with their own emotions, some come with needs. The saint nourishes them all, not counting their emotions or deficiencies.
टूका माही टक दे, चीर माहि सो चीर। साधु देत न सकुचिये, यों कथि कहहिं कबीर।।५९०।।
One stitch in the cloth makes it whole. Do not hesitate to give; this is what Kabir says.
साधु आया पाहना, मांगै चार रतन। धुनी पानी साथरा, सरधा सेती अन्न।।५९१।।
When a saint comes as a guest, he asks for four jewels. The hearth, water, and utensils are needed, and with devotion, food is served.
साधु चलत रो दीजिए, कीजै अति सनमान। कहैं कबीर कछु भेट धरु, अपने बित्त अनुमान।।५९२।।
When a saint leaves, let him go with utmost respect. Kabir says, give some gift, according to your means.
खाली साधु न बिदा करु, सुन लीजै सब कोय। कहैं कबीर कछु भेंट धरु, जो तेजे घर होय।।५९३।।
Do not send a saint away empty-handed; listen everyone. Kabir says, offer some gift according to your means, which brings blessings to your home.
बिरछा कबहुं न फल भखै, नदी न संचवै नीर। परमारथ के कारने, साधु धरा शरीर।।५९६।।
A tree does not eat its own fruit, and a river does not drink its own water. Similarly, a saint does not seek personal gain; he holds his body for the sake of altruism.
साधु सोई जानिये, चलै साधु की चाल। परमारथ करता रहै, बोलै बचन रसाल।।५९८।।
One should recognize a saint by his actions. A saint continues to do good and speaks words that are full of nectar.
इन्द्रिय मन निग्रह करन, हिरदै कोमल होय। सदा शुद्ध आचार में, रहे विचार में सोय।।६०१।।
To control the senses and mind, and to keep the heart gentle. Always remain in pure conduct and thoughts.
सुनिये पार जो पाइया, छाजन भोजन आनि। कहैं कबीर संतन को, देत न कीजै कानि।।६०३।।
Listen, if you have achieved the other shore, provide shade and food. Kabir says, do not let the saints go without offering something.
सावधान और शीलता, सदा प्रफुल्लित गात। निर्विकार गंभीर मत, धीरज दया बरसात।।६०९।।
Be alert and maintain modesty, always keep a cheerful appearance. Remain detached and serious in your thinking, and let patience and compassion shower upon you.
रक्त छाड़ि पय को गहै, ज्यौरे गऊ का बच्छ। औगुण छांड़ै गुण गहै, ऐसा साधु लच्छ।।६११।।
A saint should leave aside the blood (sacrifices) and accept milk (nourishment) like a calf. He should abandon vices and embrace virtues.
बंधा पानी निरमला, जो टूक गहिरा होय। साधु जन बैठा भला, जो कुछ साधन होय।।६१७।।
Water that is bound is pure if it is deep. Similarly, a saint is noble if he has the means to aid others.
बैरागी बिरकत भला, गिरही चित्त उदार। दोऊ चूकि खाली पड़े, ताको वार न पार।।६४०।।
Renunciants who are detached are good, but householders with a generous heart are also commendable. Both, if they are devoid of essence, are ultimately of no use.
शीलवन्त सुर ज्ञान मत, अति उदार चित्त होय। लज्जावान अति निछलता, कोमल हिरदा सोय।।६६९।।
A person of good character possesses deep knowledge, a generous heart, humility, and a pure, gentle nature.
ज्ञानी अभिमानी नहीं, सब काहु सो हेत। सत्यवान परमाथी, आदर भाव सहेत।।६८१।।
A wise person is not proud; they are devoted to the welfare of all. The truthful are supreme, embracing respect and humility.
काहूं को न संतापिये, जो शिर हंता होय। फिर फिर वाकूं बन्दिये, दास लच्छ है सोय।।६८७।।
Do not trouble anyone who is constantly troubled; the one who repeatedly turns to words is considered to be a true servant.
विषय त्याग बैराग है, समता कहिये ज्ञान। सुखदायी सब जीव सों, यही भक्ति परमान।।७०६।।
Renunciation of desires is asceticism; equanimity is knowledge. True devotion is that which brings happiness to all beings.
भक्ति गेंद चौगान की, भावै कोइ लै जाय। कहैं कबीर कछु भेद नहिं, कहां रंक कहं राय।।७२१।।
Devotion is like a game of ball; anyone who desires can take part. Kabir says there is no distinction; whether one is a pauper or a prince, all can partake.
वाद करै सो जानिये, निगरे का वह काम। संतो को फुरसत नहीं, सुमिरन करते राम।।७७७।।
One who engages in arguments is a miser. The saints have no time for disputes; they are busy remembering Ram.
रितु बसंत याचक भया, हरखि दिया द्रुम पात। ताते नव पल्लव भया, दिया दर नहिं जात।।९४७।।
The season of spring has become a beggar, delighting the trees with its leaves. From this, new shoots have emerged, and no one has gone to the door.
सत ही में सत बांटई, रोटी म ते टूक। कहैं कबीर ता दास को, कबहुं न आवै चूक।।९५१।।
In truth, truth is shared, like pieces of bread are divided. Says Kabir to the servant, never let there be any error.
दुरबल को न सताइये, जाकी मोटी हाय। बिना जीव की सांस से, लाह भसम ह्वै जाय।।९५८।।
Do not oppress the weak, for their deep sighs. The melted wax will turn to ashes with the breath of the lifeless.
कबीर आप ठगाइये, और न ठगिये कोय। आप ठगे सुख ऊपजै, और ठगे दुख होय।।९५९।।
Kabir says, let yourself be deceived, do not deceive others. Deceiving others brings sorrow, while being deceived brings peace.
धर्म किये धन ना घट, नदी न घटै नीर। अपने आंखो देखि ले, यों कथि कहहिं कबीर।।९७८।।
Righteous deeds do not diminish wealth, just as the river's water does not decrease. See it with your own eyes, thus says Kabir.
कहैं कबीर देय तू, जब लग तेरी देह। देह खेह हो जायेगी, कौन कहेगा देह।।९७९।।
Kabir says, give while you still have your body. When the body turns to dust, who will ask for it?
जग में बैरी कोय नहीं, जो मन शीतल होय। या आपा को डारि दे, दया करे सब कोय।।९८०।।
In the world, there is no enemy if the mind is calm. Abandon your ego, and everyone will show compassion.
राम नाम सुमिरन करै, सतगुरु पद निज ध्यान। आतम पूजा जीव दया, लहै सो मुक्ति अमान।।९८५।।
Chant the name of Ram and meditate on the true Guru's feet. Worship the soul, show compassion to all beings, and attain liberation.
जा तोको काटा बोवै, ताहि बोवै तू फूल। तुझको फूल का फूल है, वाको है तिरशूल।।९८६।।
To the one who sows thorns for you, sow flowers in return. You will receive flowers, while they will receive thorns.
हाड़ बड़ा हरि भजन करि, द्रव्य बड़ा कछु देह। अकल बड़ी उपकार करि, जीवन का फल येहि।।९८८।।
Use your body to chant Hari's name, use wealth to give. Use your intellect to do good deeds; this is the fruit of life.
कुटिल वचन सबतें बुरा, जारि करै सब छार। साधु वचन जल रूप है, बरसै अमृत धार।।९९१।।
Harsh words are the worst; they burn everything to ashes. The words of the saint are like water; they rain nectar.
कुटिल बचन नहिं बोलिये, शीतल बैन ले चीन्हि। गंगा जल शीतल भया, परबत फोड़ तीन्हि।।९९२।।
Do not speak harsh words, recognize the value of soft speech. The Ganga water became cool, but it broke through mountains.
खोद खाद धरती सहै, काट कूट बनराय। कुटिल बचन साधु सहै, और से सहा न जाय।।९९३।।
The earth endures digging and cutting, the forest endures chopping. The saint endures harsh words, but they are unbearable for others.
शब्द जु ऐसा बोलिये, मन का आपा खोय। औरन को शीतल करे, आपहुं शीतल होय।।१००५।।
Speak words in such a way that the ego of the mind is lost. Let your words soothe others, and you too will become serene.
जिहि शब्दे दुख ना लगे, सोई शब्द उचार। तपत मिटी सीतल भया, सोई शब्द ततसार।।१००६।।
Speak words that do not cause pain. The word that cools down the heat is the essence of truth.
कागा काको धन हरै, कोयल काको देत। मीठा शब्द सुनाय के, जग अपनो करि लेत।।१००७।।
Who does the crow rob? Whom does the cuckoo give? By speaking sweet words, one wins over the world.
मुख आवै सोई कहै, बोलै नहीं विचार। हते पराई आतमा, जीभ बांधि तलवार।।१०१९।।
One speaks whatever comes to their mouth, without thinking. They hurt others' souls as if their tongue were a sword.
तन का बैरी कोइ नहीं, जो मन शीतल होय। तूं आपा को डारि दे, दया करे सब कोय।।१११३।।
There is no enemy of the body if the mind is calm. When you abandon ego, everyone becomes compassionate.
माया जगवे कौन गन, अंत न आवै काज। सोई नाम जोगावहु, भये परमारथ साज।।११७०।।
What is the benefit of illusion in the world? It never ends. Only the name of the divine is worthy; it leads to ultimate welfare.
कबीर गर्व न कीजिये, रंक न हंसिये कोय। अजहूं नाव समुद्र में, ना जानौं क्या होय।।१२५१।।
Kabir says, do not be proud or laugh at the poor. Even now, the boat is in the ocean; we do not know what will happen.
लेने को हरिनाम है, देने को अंनदान। तरने को है दीनता, बूड़न को अभिमान।।१२७९।।
To receive is the name of God, to give is charity. To be saved requires humility, while pride leads to downfall.
आपन को न सरारिये, पर निन्दिये न कोय। चढ़ना लम्बा धौहरा, ना जाने क्या होय।।१२९०।।
Do not criticize yourself or others. The climb is long and steep; who knows what will happen.
काहू को नहिं निन्दिये, चाहे जैसा होय। फिर फिर ताको बन्दिये, साधु लच्छ है सोय।।१२९६।।
Do not criticize anyone, no matter how they are. Instead, repeatedly bind yourself, for the true sage is one who is gentle.
पानी मिलै न आप को, औरन बकसत छीर। आपन मन निहचल नहीं, और बंधावत धीर।।१३१४।।
You do not get water, but others are given milk. Your own mind remains unsettled, while you remain steadfast in holding others.
लिखा मिटै नहीं करम का, गुरु कर भज हरिनाम। सीधे मारग नित चलै, दया धर्म बिसराम।।१३४१।।
Actions are not erased by writing; worship the divine name with devotion. Always walk on the straight path, and let compassion and righteousness guide you.
दुविधा जाके मन बसै, दयावन्त जिय नाहिं। कबीर त्यागो ताहि को, भूलि देहि जनि बाहिं।।१३७९।।
The one whose mind is filled with doubts cannot have a compassionate heart. Kabir says, leave such a person, do not embrace him.
दाता दाता चलि गये, रहि गये मक्खी चूस। दान मान समुझे नहीं, लड़ने को मजबूत।।१३८७।।
The generous givers have left, leaving behind the miserly who suck even the last drop. They understand neither charity nor honor, but are strong in conflict.
कबीर सोई पीर है, जो जाने पर पीर। जो पर पीर न जानई, सो काफिर बेपीर।।१३८८।।
Kabir says, the true saint is one who feels the pain of others. The one who doesn't know others' pain is a non-believer, without compassion.
दया दया सब कोई कहै, मर्म न जानै कोय। जाति जीव जानै नहीं, दया कहां से होय।।१३८९।।
Everyone speaks of compassion, but no one understands its essence. Without understanding the nature of beings, how can one truly be compassionate?
जहां दया वहां धर्म है, जहां लोभ तहं पाप। जहां क्रोध वहां काल है, जहां क्षमा वहां आप।।१३९०।।
Where there is compassion, there is righteousness; where there is greed, there is sin. Where there is anger, there is death; where there is forgiveness, there is God.
दया भाव हिरदै नहीं, ज्ञान कथै बेहद। ते नर नरकहि जाहिंगे, सुनि सुनि साखी शबद।।१३९१।।
Those who have no compassion in their hearts but talk endlessly about knowledge will end up in hell, despite hearing countless teachings.
कुंजर मुख से मन गिरा, खुटै न वाको आहार। कीड़ी कन लेकर चली, पोषन दे परिवार।।१३९३।।
An elephant drops food from its mouth, yet its nourishment is not diminished. An ant carries a grain to feed its family.
भावै जाओ बादरी, भावै जावहु गया। कहैं कबीर सुनो भई साधो, सब ते बड़ी दया।।१३९४।।
Whether you go to Badrinath or Gaya, Kabir says, listen, O seekers, compassion is greater than all.
दया धर्म का मूल है, पाप मूल संताप। जहां क्षमा तहां धर्म है, जहां दया तहां आप।।१३९५।।
Compassion is the root of righteousness, while sin leads to suffering. Where there is forgiveness, there is virtue; where there is compassion, there is God.
दया का लच्छन भक्ति है, भक्ति से होवै ध्यान। ध्यान से मिलता ज्ञान है, यह सिद्धान्त उरान।।१३९६।।
Compassion leads to devotion, devotion leads to meditation. Meditation brings knowledge, this is the ultimate principle.
खेत भला बीज भला, बोइल मुठिका फेर। काहे बिरवा रूखरा, ई गुण खेतहिं केर।।१४८८।।
The field is good, the seed is good, yet the plant grows rough. It is the quality of the field that matters.
चंदन वास निवारहु, मूये सबै निपातिया। जिवत जीव जनि मारेहु, मूये सबै निपातिया।।१५०१।।
The fragrance of sandalwood disappears after death, but do not harm a living being, for all perish after death.
जिव बिनु जीव जिवे नहीं, जिव को जीव अधार। जीव दया के पालिये, पंडित करहु विचार।।१५२७।।
Without life, the living cannot survive; life is the foundation of existence. Show compassion to all living beings, ponder on this, O scholars.
जीव घात नहि कीजिए, बहुरि लेत वै कान। तीरथ गए न बांचिहु, कोटि हीरा देहु दान।।१५२९।।
Do not harm any living being, for karma will repay. Pilgrimages won't save you, even if you donate millions of diamonds.
जीव जनि मारह बापुरा, सबका एकहि प्राण। हत्या कबहूं न छुटि है, कोटिक सुनउ पुराण।।१५३०।।
Do not kill the innocent, for all share the same life force. Murder is never forgiven, even if you hear a million scriptures.
मानुष ह्वे के नहिं मुवा, मुवा सो डांगर ढोर। एकां जीवहिं ठौर नहिं लागा, भये सो हाथी घोर।।१६५१।।
The human does not die like an animal; the dead one is like cattle. Without a place to live, it becomes a fierce elephant.
अबरन कौं का बरनिये, मोपै लख्या न जाइ। अपना बाना बाहिया, कहि-कहि थाके माइ।।१९००।।
How can I describe the indescribable? I cannot express it. The mother who gave me birth is exhausted from trying to explain.
सूरा तबही कै परषिये, लडै दीन कै हेत। पुरिजा पुरिजा ह्व पड़ै, तऊ न छांडै खेत।।१९१४।।
The hero fights for the sake of the poor, but when the field becomes barren, he does not abandon it.
जाइ पूछौ उस घाइलै, दिवस पीड निस जाग। बांहणहारा जणि है, कै जांणै जिस लाग।।१९२०।।
Go and ask the wounded one, he remains awake in the pain of the day and night. The one who bears the pain knows best what it feels like.
जहां जुरा मरण व्यापै नहीं, मुवा न सुणिये कोइ। चलि कबीर तिहि देसड, जहां वैद विधाता होइ।।१९५७।।
Where death and disease do not pervade, and no one is said to die, Kabir moves towards that land where the divine physician and creator reside.
दाता तरवर दया फल, उपगारी जीवंत। पंषा चले दिसावरां, विरषा सुफल फलंत।।१९६३।।
The tree of the giver bears fruit of compassion, which is beneficial to the living. The birds go to different directions, and the rain produces fruitful results.
ऐसा कोई न मिले, हम कौं लेइ पिछानि। अपना करि किरपा करे, ले उतारे मैदानि।।१९६५।।
No one is found to lift us up and rescue us. Only by showing mercy to ourselves, we can be saved from the field of strife.
निरबैरी निहकांमता, सांई सेती नेह। विषिया सूं न्यारा रहै, संतहि का अंग एह।।१९८९।।
Harmlessness and humility are the essence of love with the divine. Being detached from worldly pleasures, this is the true mark of a saint.
साधु सती औ सिंह को, ज्यों लंघन त्यों शोभ। सिंह न मारै मींडका, साधु न बांधे लोभ।।२०९४।।
Saints, virtuous ones, and lions shine as they cross boundaries. A lion does not harm a mosquito, and a saint is not swayed by greed.
तीर तुबक सों जो लड, सो तो शूरा नाहिं। शूरा सोइ सराहिये, बांटि बांटि धन खाहिं।।२१३३।।
One who fights with arrows and guns is not truly brave. The true brave are those who are praised, sharing their wealth.
राम रतन धन मुक्ति में, खान खुली घट माहिं। सेतमेतही देतहों, ग्रोहक कोई नाहिं।।२१६७।।
The jewel of Ram’s name is in liberation, the treasure is open within the vessel. It is given with conditions, but there is no buyer.
औगुन किया तो बहु किया, करत न मानी हारि। भावै बंदा बखशियो, भावै गरदन मारि।।२१८९।।
If faults are committed, many are committed. One does not accept defeat. Either the person is forgiven, or their neck is struck down.
