Character is the greatest virtue, a mine of all gems. The wealth of the three worlds lies in good character.
जो तोको काँटा बुवे, ताहि बोय तू फूल। तोको फूल के फूल हैं, ताके हैं त्रिशूल।।११।।
If someone sows thorns for you, sow flowers for them. You will get flowers, but they will get thorns.
आए हैं सो जाएंगे, राजा रंक फकीर। एक सिंहासन चढ़ चले, एक बँधे जात जंजीर।।१३।।
Those who have come will leave, whether they are kings, paupers, or saints. Some leave in grandeur on thrones, while others leave in chains.
माँगन मरण समान है, मति माँगो कोई भीख। माँगन से तो मरना भला, यह सतगुरु की सीख।।१४।।
Begging is akin to death; do not ask for alms. Better to die than to beg, such is the teaching of the true Guru.
गारी ही सों ऊपजै, कलह, कष्ट और मींच। हारि चले सो साधु है, लागि चले सो नीच।।१७।।
From harsh words arise conflict, suffering, and pain. The one who steps back is a saint, the one who retaliates is lowly.
दान दिए धन ना घटे, नदी न घटे नीर। अपनी आँखों देख लो, यूँ क्या कहे कबीर।।१८।।
Giving away wealth does not decrease it, just as water does not decrease in a river. See this with your own eyes, says Kabir.
कुटिल वचन सबसे बुरा, जारि करै तन हार। साधु वचन जल रूप है, बरसे अमृत धार।।२१।।
Harsh words are the worst; they burn the body and soul. The words of a saint are like water, pouring down as nectar.
पतिव्रता मैली, काली, कुचैल, कुरूप। पतिव्रता के रूप पर, वारो कोटि सरूप।।२६।।
A devoted wife may be dirty, dark, and ugly, but I would sacrifice millions of beauties for her virtue.
जाके जिव्याँ बंधन नहीं, हृदय में नाहीं सांच। वाके संग न लागिए, खाली वटिया कांच।।३०।।
Do not associate with those who are not bound by any principles and have no truth in their hearts. It is like eating shards of glass.
वस्तु है, ग्राहक नहीं, वस्तु सागर अनमोल। बिना करम का मानव, फिरै डांवाडोल।।३५।।
The goods are there but no buyer; the ocean of virtues is priceless. Without good deeds, humans wander aimlessly.
कामी, क्रोधी, लालची, इनसे भक्ति न होय। भक्ति करे कोइ सूरमा, जाति-वरन कुल खोय।।३७।।
Desires, anger, and greed hinder devotion. True devotion comes from a valiant person who forsakes caste, color, and family.
जागन में सोवन करे, साधन में लौ लाय। सूरत-डोर लागी रहे, तार टूट नाहिं जाय।।३८।।
Those who sleep during awakening and bring light in practices will have their sight remain steady, like a thread that doesn’t break.
साधु ऐसा चहिए, जैसा सूप सुभाय। सार-सार को गहि रहे, थोथ देइ उड़ाय।।३९।।
A saint should be like a sieve, which retains the essence and lets go of the chaff.
छीर-रूप सतनाम है, नीर-रूप व्यवहार। हंस-रूप कोइ साधु है, सत का छाननहार।।४४।।
The essence of truth is like milk, while the worldly actions are like water. A true saint is like a swan who separates the milk from water.
जब लगि भगति सकाम है, तब लग निष्फल सेव। कहै कबीर, वह क्यों मिले, निष्कामी तजि देव।।५१।।
As long as devotion is selfish, the service is fruitless. Kabir says, why should that devotee be honored who leaves selfless devotion?
दया कौन पर कीजिए, का पर निर्दय होय। सांई के सब जीव हैं, कीरी-कुंजर दोय।।५४।।
Who should you show compassion to? It should be shown to all, for all creatures are the same, be they an ant or an elephant.
सबते लघुताई भली, लघुता ते सब होय। जैसे दूज का चंद्रमा, शीश नवै सब कोय।।५८।।
The greatest virtue is humility, from which everything else emerges. Like the second moon, everyone bows their head before it.
मारग चलते जो गिरा, ताकौं नाहि दोष। यह कबीर बैठा रहे, ता सिर करहैं दोष।।५९।।
One who falls while walking the path is not at fault. But if Kabir is sitting, then it is a fault of the head.
सुख-सागर का शील है, कोई न पावे थाह। शब्द बिना साधु नहीं, द्रव्य बिना नहीं शाह।।६१।।
The virtue of the ocean of happiness cannot be fathomed. Without words, there are no saints; without wealth, there are no kings.
फल कारण सेवा करे, करे न मन से काम। कहै कबीर सेवक नहीं, चाहे चौगुना दाम।।६३।।
If someone serves expecting rewards, and does not work sincerely from the heart, Kabir says that person is not a true servant; they are just seeking fourfold returns.
कबिरा, यह तन जात है, सके तो ठौर लगा। कहि सेवा कर साधु की, कहि गोविंद गुण गा।।६५।।
Kabir says, this body is transient; if possible, find a place of refuge. Serve the saints and sing the praises of the Lord.
ऊँचे कुल में जामिया, करनी ऊँच न होय। सौंरण कलश सुरा भरी, साधु निंदा सोय।।७२।।
Being born into a high caste does not make one noble. A pot filled with holy water or wine is still considered low if it is used for criticizing the pious.
सुमिरन की सुबिझ करो, ज्यों गागर पनिहार। होले-होले सुरत में, कहैं कबीर विचार।।७३।।
Just as a water-bearer carefully handles a pitcher, keep your mind gently focused on remembrance. Kabir speaks of this understanding.
साँई आगे साँच है, साँई साँच सुहाय। चाहे बोले केस रख, चाहे घौंट भुण्डाय।।७९।।
The truth is in the presence of the Divine; the Divine is truth and beauty. Whether one keeps long hair or shaves, it is of no consequence.
खेत न छोड़े सूरमा, जूझे दो दल माहि। आशा-जीवन मरण की, मन में राखे नाहि।।८०।।
A brave person does not abandon the field, even if two armies fight. Hope in life and death should remain in the mind.
लीक पुरानी को तजें, कायर कुटिल कपूत। लीक पुरानी पर चलें, साहसी सिंह सपूत।।८१।।
Abandon the old path if you are cowardly, deceitful, and wicked. Stay on the old path if you are a clever and righteous person.
साधु, सती, और सूरमा, इनकी बात अगाध। आशा छोड़े देह की, तन की अनथक साध।।८८।।
The words of saints, sages, and warriors are profound. They abandon hope in the body and tireless effort of the physical self.
उतते कोई न आवई, पासूं पूछूं धाय। एते ही सब जात हैं, भार लदाय लदाय।।९६।।
No one comes to help when you rise; you ask for help from others. Everyone has their own burdens to carry.
कबीरा संगति साधु की, जौ की भूसी खाय। खीर खांड़ भोज मिले, ताकर संग न जाय।।९८।।
Kabir says, even if you eat husks, if you are in the company of the saint, you will receive the finest food and nourishment. The association with the saint is more valuable than worldly comforts.
कबीरा कलह अरु कल्पना, सतसंगति से जाय। दुख बासे भागा फिरै, सुख में रहै समाय।।१०१।।
Kabir says that conflict and illusion vanish through association with the righteous. Suffering departs and one remains in joy.
कबीरा संगत साधु की, निष्फल कभी न होय। होमी चन्दन बासना, नीम न कहसी कोय।।१०३।।
Kabir says that the association with saints is never fruitless. The fragrance of sandalwood is never compared to that of neem.
कबीरा लोहा एक है, गढ़ने में है फेर। ताहि का बखतर बने, ताहि की शमशेर।।१११।।
Kabir says that iron is one, but it transforms differently in the process. It can become armor or a sword depending on how it is forged.
कहे कबीर देय तू, जब तक तेरी देह। देह खेह हो जाएगी, कौन कहेगा देह।।११२।।
Kabir says, give away all you can while your body is still here. When the body is gone, who will speak of it?
कबिरा आप ठगाइए, और न ठगिए कोय। आप ठगे सुख होत है, और ठगे दुख होय।।११६।।
Kabir says, deceive yourself and not others. Deceiving yourself brings happiness, while deceiving others brings sorrow.
चन्दन जैसा साधु है, सर्पहि सम संसार। वाके अग्ङ लपटा रहे, मन मे नाहिं विकार।।११९।।
The saint is like sandalwood, and the world is like a serpent. The saint remains wrapped in the divine, without any inner flaws.
क्षमा बड़े न को उचित है, छोटे को उत्पात। कहा विष्णु का घटि गया, जो भुगु मारीलात।।१४७।।
Forgiveness is not appropriate for the mighty, but for the weak it causes chaos. Where did Vishnu’s vessel go, for it is bound to suffer the consequences.
पतिबरता मैली भली, गले कांच को पोत। सब सखियन में यों दिपै, ज्यों रवि ससि को जोत।।१६५।।
A devoted wife may be unclean, but if she applies glass (to adorn herself) around her neck, she shines among all friends, like the sun and moon's light.
परनारी का राचणौ, जिसकी लहसण की खानि। खूणैं बेसिर खाइय, परगट होइ दिवानि।।१६६।।
The conduct of a woman is compared to a container of garlic. One who eats without consideration of others, reveals their true nature.
कबीर कलि खोटी भई, मुनियर मिलै न कोइ। लालच लोभी मसकरा, तिनकूँ आदर होइ।।१६८।।
The Kali Yuga has become corrupt, and no sage is found. The greedy and deceitful are honored instead.
बुगली नीर बिटालिया, सायर चढ़या कलंक। और पखेरू पी गये, हंस न बौवे चंच।।१७६।।
The frog's water has evaporated, the lark is covered with stains. The other birds have drunk, but the swan remains unruffled.
मैं जाण्यूँ पाढ़िबो भलो, पाढ़िबा थे भलो जोग। राम-नाम सूं प्रीती करि, भल भल नींयो लोग।।१८१।।
I know that reading scriptures is good, and so is performing rituals. But loving the name of Ram is the best, truly the highest good.
जैसी मुख तै नीकसै, तैसी चाले चाल। पार ब्रह्म नेड़ा रहै, पल में करै निहाल।।१८३।।
As is the outward appearance, so are the actions. The Supreme Being is near, and in a moment, one becomes fulfilled.
कबीरा खाई कोट कि, पानी पिवै न कोई। जाइ मिलै जब गंग से, तब गंगोदक होइ।।१९३।।
Kabir says, even if one has consumed many times the quantity of water from a well, it is not equivalent to drinking the sacred water of the Ganges.
मूरख संग न कीजिये, लोहा जलि न तिराइ। कदली-सीप-भुजगं मुख, एक बूंद तिहँ भाइ।।१९५।।
Do not associate with fools, who cannot be purified by fire. They are like the fruit of a banana, a shell, or a snake's mouth; a single drop is their worth.
मैं मन्ता मन मारि रे, घट ही माहैं घेरि। जबहीं चालै पीठि दे, अंकुस दै-दै फेरि।।२०६।।
I discipline my mind and confine it within my own self. Whenever it goes astray, I control it with the stick of wisdom.
कबीर केवल राम की, तू जिनि छाँड़ै ओट। घण-अहरनि बिचि लौह ज्यूँ, घणी सहै सिर चोट।।२१४।।
Kabir says, do not abandon Ram's shelter. Like iron between the hammer and anvil, one must endure many blows.
कैसो कहा बिगाड़िया, जो मुंडै सौ बार। मन को काहे न मूंडिये, जामे विषम-विकार।।२१८।।
What harm is there in shaving the head a hundred times? Why not shave the mind that is full of severe defects?
हैवर गैवर सघन धन, छत्रपती की नारि। तास पटेतर ना तुलै, हरिजन की पनिहारि।।२२७।।
Wealth, horses, elephants, and a queen of a king cannot compare to a servant of Hari.
जिहिं धरि साध न पूजि, हरि की सेवा नाहिं। ते घर भड़धट सारषे, भूत बसै तिन माहिं।।२२८।।
The home where saints are not respected and Hari is not served, that house is like a cremation ground, inhabited by spirits.
कबीर सोई सूरिमा, मन सूँ मांडै झूझ। पंच पयादा पाड़ि ले, दूरि करै सब दूज।।२३३।।
Kabir says, the true warrior is the one who fights with his mind. He conquers the five senses and removes all duality.
जेते तारे रैणि के, तेतै बैरी मुझ। धड़ सूली सिर कंगुरै, तऊ न बिसारौ तुझ।।२३६।।
As many stars there are in the night, so many are my enemies. Even if my head is on the gallows, I will not forget you.
कबीर चेरा संत का, दासनि का परदास। कबीर ऐसैं होइ रक्षा, ज्यूँ पाऊँ तलि घास।।२४०।।
Kabir is the servant of the saint and the handmaid's messenger. Kabir seeks protection as the grass grows under the foot.
कबीर हरि कग नाव, सूँ प्रीति रहै इकवार। तौ मुख तैं मोती झड़ै, हीरे अन्त न पार।।२४३।।
Kabir says, if you have love for Hari with a single boat, pearls will fall from your mouth and diamonds will be found at the end.
कोई एक राखै सावधां, चेतनि पहरै जागि। बस्तर बासन सूँ खिसै, चोर न सकई लागि।।२४४।।
One who stays vigilant and aware, even if the clothes are worn out, the thief cannot get to them.
पदारथ पेलि करि, कंकर लीया हाथि। जोड़ी बिछटी हंस की, पड़या बगां के साथि।।२४५।।
Holding a pebble with the hand, and pairing it with a swan, was like getting along with the beggar.
खूंदन तौ धरती सहै, बाढ़ सहै बनराइ। कुसबद तौ हरिजन सहै, दूजै सह्या न जाइ।।२४८।।
The earth can bear the flooding, the forest can withstand the floods. But the bad words are unbearable for the righteous; they cannot tolerate them.
हीरा परा बजार में, रहा छार लपिटाइ। ब तक मूरख चलि गये, पारखि लिया उठाइ।।२४९।।
The diamond remained covered in dust in the market. Only the discerning picked it up and recognized its value.
तबही गुरु प्रिय बैन कहि, शीष बढ़ी चित प्रीत। ते रहियें गुरु सनमुखाँ, कबहूँ न दीजै पीठ।।२६०।।
Then say that the Guru is beloved; the mind and heart are uplifted. Always remain in the presence of the Guru; never turn your back on them.
लौ लागी विष भागिया, कालख डारी धोय। कहैं कबीर गुरु साबुन सों, कोई इक ऊजल होय।।२६४।।
The fire of poison burns the unfortunate, while time washes away the stain. Kabir says that only the Guru's soap can cleanse anyone of their sins.
साबुन बिचारा क्या करे, गाँठे राखे मोय। जल सो अरसां नहिं, क्यों कर ऊजल होय।।२६६।।
What can the innocent soap do, it only keeps the stains? Water cannot wash away the essence; how can it be cleansed?
जाका गुरु है गीरही, गिरही चेला होय। कीच-कीच के धोवते, दाग न छूटे कोय।।२८७।।
If the Guru is worldly, the disciple will also be worldly. No matter how much they try to cleanse themselves, the stains will not go away.
कहता हूँ कहि जात हूँ, देता हूँ हेला। गुरु की करनी गुरु जाने, चेला की चेला।।२९१।।
I speak and go on speaking, without any hesitation. The Guru's deeds are known to him, and the disciple's to the disciple.
स्वामी सेवक होय के, मनही में मिलि जाय। चतुराई रीझै नहीं, रहिये मन के माय।।२९४।।
When the master and servant become one in mind, cleverness and pretense hold no value. Remain simple at heart.
सत को खोजत मैं फिरूँ, सतिया न मिलै न कोय। जब सत को सतिया मिले, विष तजि अमृत होय।।२९५।।
I wandered in search of truth, but could not find anyone truthful. When the truth meets the truthful, poison turns into nectar.
साकट कहा न कहि चलै, सुनहा कहा न खाय। जो कौवा मठ हगि भरै, तो मठ को कहा नशाय।।३०२।।
The wicked person will not speak truthfully, and the wise will not consume what is impure. If a crow defiles a monastery, does that monastery lose its sanctity?
आँखों देखा घी भला, न मुख मेला तेल। साघु सो झगड़ा भला, ना साकट सों मेल।।३१२।।
Seeing clarified butter with your eyes is good, but if your mouth is oily, it is not useful. It is better to have a dispute with a saint than to have a friendship with a wicked person.
दोय बखत नहिं करि सके, दिन में करूँ इक बार। कबीर साधु दरश ते, उतरैं भव जल पार।।३१३।।
One cannot perform rituals twice a day, but if done once a day, it is sufficient. Kabir says, by seeing the saint, one can cross the ocean of worldly life.
बार-बार नहिं करि सके, पाख-पाख करिलेय। कहैं कबीरन सो भक्त जन, जन्म सुफल करि लेय।।३१४।।
One cannot perform rituals repeatedly, but if done properly, it is effective. Kabir says that such devotees will make their lives fruitful.
छठे मास नहिं करि सके, बरस दिना करि लेय। कहैं कबीर सो भक्तजन, जमहिं चुनौती देय।।३१५।।
If one cannot perform rituals for six months, they can do it for a year. Kabir says such devotees challenge even Yama (the god of death).
मास-मास नहिं करि सकै, उठे मास अलबत्त। यामें ढील न कीजिये, कहै कबीर अविगत्त।।३१६।।
If one cannot perform rituals every month, they can still do it within a month. Kabir says do not delay in this matter.
इन अटकाया न रुके, साधु दरश को जाय। कहै कबीर सोई संतजन, मोक्ष मुक्ति फल पाय।।३१७।।
Obstacles cannot stop the visit to a saint. Kabir says, those saints who overcome such hindrances attain liberation and spiritual rewards.
कबीर दर्शन साधु के, खाली हाथ न जाय। यही सीख बुध लीजिए, कहै कबीर बुझाय।।३१८।।
Do not visit a saint with empty hands. Kabir says, learn this lesson, that visiting a saint should involve giving something.
साधु बड़े परमारथी, शीतल जिनके अंग। तपन बुझावै ओर की, देदे अपनो रंग।।३२०।।
Saints are great benefactors, whose bodies are cool and calm. They extinguish the heat of worldly desires and give their own hue.
छाजन भोजन प्रीति सो, दीजै साधु बुलाय। जीवन जस है जगन में, अन्त परम पद पाय।।३२२।।
Offer food and affection to the saint who is invited. Life is like a journey, and in the end, one attains the supreme state.
सरवर तरवर सन्त जन, चौथा बरसे मेह। परमारथ के कारने, चारों धारी देह।।३२३।।
The saints are like the lake and trees, where rain falls in abundance. For the sake of benevolence, they sustain the four aspects of the body.
साधुन की झुपड़ी भली, न साकट के गाँव। चंदन की कुटकी भली, ना बूबल बनराव।।३२४।।
A saint's humble abode is better than a village of misers. A small piece of sandalwood is better than a heap of brambles.
क्यों नृपनारि निन्दिये, पनिहारी को मान। वह माँग सँवारे पीववहित, नित वह सुमिरे राम।।३२६।।
Why criticize a king’s wife and honor a water carrier? She who carefully fetches water for her husband and constantly remembers Ram is of higher value.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, दुखै दुखावै नाहिं। पान फूल छेड़े नहीं, बसै बगीचा माहिं।।३३२।।
A saint should be such that he does not cause pain to others. He does not disturb flowers and fruits, but resides in the garden.
साधु कहावन कठिन है, ज्यों खांड़े की धार। डगमगाय तो गिर पड़े, निहचल उतरे पार।।३३३।।
The path of a saint is as difficult as the edge of a razor. If you falter, you will fall; only the steadfast will cross over.
साधु चाल जु चालई, साधु की चाल। बिन साधन तो सुधि नाहिं, साधु कहाँ ते होय।।३३५।।
The way of a saint is his own way. Without proper means, there is no understanding; how can one be called a saint?
साधू-साधू सबहीं बड़े, अपनी-अपनी ठौर। शब्द विवेकी पारखी, ते माथे के मौर।।३३८।।
All saints are great, each in their own place. The discerning word is like a crown on their head.
सदा रहे सन्तोष में, धरम आप दृढ़ धार। आश एक गुरुदेव की, और चित्त विचार।।३३९।।
Always remain in contentment, with steadfast adherence to righteousness. Hope lies in the guru, and the mind should be focused on contemplation.
सदा कृपालु दु:ख परिहरन, बैर भाव नहिं दोय। छिमा ज्ञान सत भाखही, सिंह रहित तु होय।।३४०।।
Always compassionate and removing sorrows, free from feelings of enmity. Forgiveness and wisdom are his speech, without pride like a lion.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, जाके ज्ञान विवेक। बाहर मिलते सों मिलें, अन्तर सबसों एक।।३४१।।
A saint should be one who possesses knowledge and discernment. Though he may meet others externally, internally he is the same as all.
निबैंरी निहकामता, स्वामी सेती नेह। विषया सो न्यारा रहे, साधुन का मत येह।।३४२।।
Renunciation and selflessness, affection towards the Lord. Worldly desires remain separate, this is the belief of the saint.
सन्त न छाड़ै सन्तता, कोटिक मिलै असंत। मलय भुवंगय बेधिया, शीतलता न तजन्त।।३४३।।
A saint does not abandon saintliness, though millions may find the opposite. Like the breeze that pierces the Malaya hills, he does not abandon his coolness.
एक छाड़ि पय को गहैं, ज्यों रे गऊ का बच्छ। अवगुण छाड़ै गुण गहै, ऐसा साधु लच्छ।।३४४।।
Leaving one thing, he holds onto another, like a calf holding onto its mother's milk. A saint renounces faults and embraces virtues.
जुवा चोरी मुखबिरी, ब्याज बिरानी नारि। जो चाहै दीदार को, इतनी वस्तु निवारि।।३४७।।
Gambling, theft, informers, interest, and disdainful women. Those who seek true vision should avoid these things.
सन्त मिले सुख ऊपजै, दुष्ट मिले दुख होय। सेवा कीजै साधु की, जन्म कृतारथ होय।।३५०।।
Meeting saints brings happiness, while meeting the wicked causes sorrow. Serve the saints, and your life will be fulfilled.
संगत कीजै साधु की, कभी न निष्फल होय। लोहा पारस परस ते, सो भी कंचन होय।।३५१।।
Association with saints is never futile. Just as iron turns to gold when touched by the philosopher's stone.
दया गरीबी बन्दगी, समता शील सुभाव। येते लक्षण साधु के, कहैं कबीर सतभाव।।३५३।।
Compassion, humility, devotion, equality, and good nature—these are the qualities of a saint, says Kabir.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, जहाँ रहै तहँ गैब। बानी के बिस्तार में, ताकूँ कोटिक ऐब।।३५७।।
A saint should be one whose presence is hidden, and whose speech covers countless faults.
साधु-ऐसा चाहिए, जाका पूरा मंग। विपत्ति पड़े छाड़ै नहीं, चढ़े चौगुना रंग।।३६०।।
A saint should be one who fulfills all requests and does not abandon even in adversity. Such a saint's presence enriches and multiplies.
जौ मानुष गृह धर्म युत, राखै शील विचार। गुरुमुख बानी साधु संग, मन वच सेवा सार।।३६४।।
One who upholds domestic duties and virtues, and who engages in the guru's teachings and saintly company, both in mind and speech, finds true essence in service.
पाँच सात सुमता भरी, गुरु सेवा चित लाय। तब गुरु आज्ञा लेय के, रहे देशान्तर जाय।।३६७।।
After filling oneself with virtues of humility, and dedicating oneself to the service of the guru, one may then receive the guru's command and go to foreign lands.
मन मैला तन ऊजरा, बगुला कपटी अंग। तासों तो कौवा भला, तन मन एकहि रंग।।३६९।।
The mind is impure and the body is outwardly clean, like a deceitful heron. Compared to such a person, a crow is better as its body and mind are of the same color.
धारा तो दोनों भली, बिरही के बैराग। गिरही दासातन करे, बैरागी अनुराग।।३७२।।
Both streams are good, the renunciation of the separated and the devotion of the householder. The householder's detachment and the renunciant's devotion both have their merits.
अनमाँगा उत्तम कहा, मध्यम माँगि जो लेय। कहैं कबीर निकृष्टि सो, पर धर धरना देय।।३७६।।
Not asking is the best; asking and receiving is average. Kabir says, asking for something lowers one's dignity.
कबीरा संगत साधु की, नित प्रति कीर्ज जाय। दुरमति दूर बहावसी, देशी सुमति बताय।।३७८।।
Constant association with saints drives away evil thoughts and brings wisdom and good understanding.
संत कबीर गुरु के देश में, बसि जावै जो कोय। कागा ते हंसा बनै, जाति बरन कुछ खोय।।३८३।।
Whoever resides in the land of the guru of saints becomes transformed. A crow turns into a swan, and caste and varna lose their significance.
काचा सेती मति मिलै, पाका सेती बान। काचा सेती मिलत ही, है तन धन की हान।।३८५।।
One gains intellect with raw (imperfect) means and skill with mature (perfect) methods. Associating with raw means results in loss of body and wealth.
जीवन जीवन रात मद, अविचल रहै न कोय। जु दिन जाय सत्संग में, जीवन का फल सोय।।३९०।।
Life is like a night of intoxication, and no one remains steadfast. But if one spends the day in the company of saints, the fruit of life is realized.
कबीर विषधर बहु मिले, मणिधर मिला न कोय। विषधर को मणिधर मिले, विष तजि अमृत होय।।३९४।।
Many poisonous creatures are encountered, but not a single gem-holder. If a poisonous snake meets a gem-holder, its poison turns to nectar.
सज्जन सों सज्जन मिले, होवे दो दो बात। गहदा सो गहदा मिले, खावे दो दो लात।।३९५।।
When good people meet, there are two good conversations. But when fools meet, they exchange two blows.
संगति ऐसी कीजिये, सरसा नर सो संग। लर-लर लोई हेत है, तऊ न छौड़ रंग।।४००।।
Associate with such people whose company is like the syrupy nectar; even if they have flaws, do not abandon their company.
साधु संग गुरु भक्ति अरू, बढ़त बढ़त बढ़ि जाय। ओछी संगत खर शब्द रू, घटत-घटत घटि जाय।।४०२।।
Association with saints and devotion to the guru increases continually. But association with the lowly and the harsh words decrease continuously.
संगत कीजै साधु की, होवे दिन-दिन हेत। साकुट काली कामली, धोते होय न सेत।।४०३।।
Associate with saints daily, and it will benefit you day by day. The blackened cloth will not get clean, even if you wash it repeatedly.
दया और धरम का ध्वजा, धीरजवान प्रमान। सन्तोषी सुख दायका, सेवक परम सुजान।।४०९।।
The flag of compassion and righteousness is flown by the patient. The contented and wise servant is the giver of happiness.
गुरु भक्ति अति कठिन है, ज्यों खाड़े की धार। बिना साँच पहुँचे नहीं, महा कठिन व्यवहार।।४१२।।
Devotion to the Guru is extremely difficult, like walking on the edge of a sword. Without truth, one cannot reach the goal; it's a very difficult practice.
जब लग भक्ति सकाम है, तब लग निष्फल सेव। कहैं कबीर वह क्यों मिलै, निहकामी निजदेव।।४१३।।
As long as devotion is filled with desires, all service remains fruitless. Kabir says, how can one meet the selfless Divine with a mind full of desires?
भक्ति पन्थ बहुत कठिन है, रती न चालै खोट। निराधार का खोल है, अधर धार की चोट।।४१७।।
The path of devotion is very difficult; deceit cannot pass through even a fraction of it. It's like a bridge without support, requiring careful balance to cross.
काल काम तत्काल है, बुरा न कीजै कोय। भले भलई पे लहै, बुरे बुराई होय।।४४७।।
Time and actions are immediate; do no evil. Goodness will be rewarded, while evil will lead to downfall.
सोना सज्जन साधुजन, टूट जुड़े सौ बार। दुर्जन कुंभ कुम्हार के, एके धक्का दरार।।४५४।।
Gold and virtuous saints may break and rejoin a hundred times. The wicked, like a clay pot, breaks with a single blow.
बहता पानी निर्मला, बंधे सो गंदा होए। साधु जन रमता भला, दाग न लागै कोय।।४५७।।
Flowing water is pure, but water that is contained becomes dirty. The saint who wanders is virtuous, no stain attaches to him.
सूरा सोई सराहिये, लड़े मुक्ति के हेत। पुर्जा पुर्जा कट पड़े, तो भी ना छाड़े खेत।।४५९।।
The brave person is praised, who fights for liberation. Even if torn piece by piece, he does not abandon the field.
भागे भला न होएगा, कहा धरोगे पाव। सिर सौंपो सीधे लड़ो, काहे करौ कुदाव।।४६६।।
Running away will not do any good, where will you go with your feet? Surrender your head and fight directly, why act foolishly?
गुरु गोविन्द करि जानिये, रहिये शब्द समाय। मिलै तो दण्डवत बंदगी, नहिं पल पल ध्यान लगाय।।४७६।।
Recognize the Guru as the Lord and the Sustainer. When you meet him, offer obeisance and not just practice meditation every moment.
अबुध सुबुध सुत मातु पितु, सबहि करै प्रतिपाल। अपनी ओर निबाहिये, सिख सुत गहि निज चाल।।४८६।।
The ignorant and the wise, sons and parents, all provide support and care. One should focus on their own conduct and follow their own path.
ज्ञान समागम प्रेम सुख, दया भक्ति विश्वास। गुरु सेवा ते पाइये, सद्गुरु चरण निवास।।४८९।।
Knowledge, love, happiness, compassion, devotion, and trust come together. Through the service of the Guru, one attains the dwelling in the feet of the True Guru.
चित चोखा मन निरमला, बुधि उत्तम मति धीर। सो धोखा नहिं बिरहहीं, सतगुरु मिले कबीर।।५००।।
A pure mind and a clear intellect are free from deception. Meeting the True Guru ensures this purity and wisdom.
सतगुरु सम को है सगा, साधु सम को दात। हरि समान को है हितु, हरिजन सम को जात।।५०४।।
The True Guru is like a relative to all, a benefactor to saints. He is like the Lord in his love, and equal to all the devotees.
सतगुरु सांचा शूरमा, नख शिख मारा पूर। बाहिर घाव न दीखई, अन्तर चकनाचूर।।५०७।।
The true Guru is a real hero, whose entire being is filled with strength. While there may be no visible wounds, internally they are shattered.
जेहि खोजत ब्रह्मा थके, सुर नर मुनि अरु देव। कहैं कबीर सुन साधवा, करु सतगुरु की सेव।।५१२।।
Even Brahma, the gods, sages, and deities become weary in their search. Kabir says, listen, O seekers, serve the true Guru.
गुरु नाम है गम्य का, शीष सीख ले सोय। बिनु पद बिनु मरजाद नर, गुरु शीष नहिं कोय।।५१५।।
The Guru's name is the destination; only those who learn by bowing down can reach it. Without a path or dignity, a person cannot be a true disciple.
बंधे को बंधा मिला, छूटै कौन उपाय। कर सेवा निरबंध की, पल में लेत छुड़ाय।।५३०।।
The bound one finds bondage, who has the means to escape? Serve the unbound, and in a moment, you will be freed.
सरबस सीस चढ़ाइये, तन कृत सेवा सार। भूख प्यास सहे ताड़ना, गुरु के सुरति निहार।।५४१।।
Offer everything to the Guru, serve with dedication. Endure hunger, thirst, and hardships, but never lose sight of the Guru's teachings.
हरिजन की लातां भलीं, बुरि साकट की बात। लातों में सुख ऊपजे, बाते इज्जत जात।।५५६।।
The kick of a Harijan is better, than the praise of a miser. Happiness arises from kicks, while respect comes from words.
कबीर सोई दिन भला, जा दिन साधु मिलाय। अंक भरि भरि भेटिये, पाप शरीरा जाय।।५५९।।
The day is truly good when one meets a saint. By meeting him and filling one's heart, sins are removed from the body.
कबीर दर्शन साधु के, करत न कीजै कानि। ज्यों उद्यम से लक्ष्मी, आलस मन से हानि।।५६१।।
Do not be lazy in visiting saints. Just as effort brings wealth, laziness brings loss.
कई बार नहिं कर सके, दोय बख्त करि लेय। कबीर साधु दरश ते, काल दगा नहिं देय।।५६३।।
One who cannot bathe often, should bathe twice a day. Kabir says, the sight of a saint does not deceive.
एक दिना नहिं करि सके, दूजे दिन कर लेह। कबीर साधु दरश ते, पावै उत्तम देह।।५६५।।
If you cannot do it today, then do it the next day. Kabir says, through the sight of a saint, you will attain a superior body.
पाख पाख नहिं करि सकै, मास-मास करु जाय। यामें देर न लाइये, कहैं कबीर समुझाय।।५६८।।
If you cannot do it seasonally, then do it monthly. Do not delay in this; Kabir advises to understand this.
मास-मास नहिं करि सकै, छठै मास अलबत्त। यामें ढील न कीजिए, कहैं कबीर अविगत।।५६९।।
If you cannot do it monthly, then do it every six months. Do not slack in this; Kabir advises to be persistent.
बरस-बरस नहिं करि सकै, ताको लागे दोष। कहैं कबीर वा जीव सो, कबहु न पावै मोष।।५७०।।
If one cannot do it year after year, they are at fault. Kabir says, such a soul will never attain liberation.
साधु मिले यह सब टलै, काल-हाल जम चोट। शीश नवावत ढहि परै, अघ्ज्ञ पापन के पोट।।५७३।।
All troubles are alleviated when one meets a saint. Time, circumstances, and death are but minor inconveniences. When one bows to a saint, the burden of sins is lifted.
साधु भूखा भाव का, धन का भूखा नाहिं। धन का भूखा जो फिरै, सो तो साधु नाहिं।।५७४।।
A saint is hungry only for spiritual feelings, not for material wealth. One who wanders in search of wealth is not a true saint.
साधु बड़े परमारथी, धन ज्यों बरसे आय। तपन बुझावैं और की, अपनो पारस लाय।।५७७।।
The true saint is dedicated to the welfare of others, like rain that falls to nourish the earth. He can extinguish the heat and bring transformation just like the philosopher's stone.
मानपमान न चित्त धरै, औरत को सनमान। जो कोई आशा करै, उपदेशै तेहि ज्ञान।।५८०।।
One should not be attached to social status or honor, but should instead respect and honor others. Those who seek knowledge will find it through teachings.
साधु जन सब में रमैं, दुख न काहू देहि। अपने मत गाढ़ा रहै, साधुन का मय येहि।।५८१।।
A saint resides in everyone and does not cause suffering to anyone. He remains steadfast in his beliefs and lives in the essence of the saint.
कबीर शीतल जल नहीं, हिम ना शीतल होय। कबीर शीतल सन्त जन, राम सनेही सोय।।५८३।।
Kabir is not cold water, nor is he cold like snow. Kabir is the cool saint who is beloved of Lord Ram.
कबीर लौंग-इलायची, दातुन माटी पानि। कहैं कबीर संतन को, देत न कीजै कानि।।५८५।।
Kabir says, cloves, cardamom, and brushing sticks are of no use. Kabir advises saints not to take any bribes.
कोई आवै भाव लै, कोई अभाव ले आव। साधु दाऊ को पोषते, भाव न गिनै अभाव।।५८९।।
Some come with their own emotions, some come with needs. The saint nourishes them all, not counting their emotions or deficiencies.
टूका माही टक दे, चीर माहि सो चीर। साधु देत न सकुचिये, यों कथि कहहिं कबीर।।५९०।।
One stitch in the cloth makes it whole. Do not hesitate to give; this is what Kabir says.
साधु आया पाहना, मांगै चार रतन। धुनी पानी साथरा, सरधा सेती अन्न।।५९१।।
When a saint comes as a guest, he asks for four jewels. The hearth, water, and utensils are needed, and with devotion, food is served.
साधु चलत रो दीजिए, कीजै अति सनमान। कहैं कबीर कछु भेट धरु, अपने बित्त अनुमान।।५९२।।
When a saint leaves, let him go with utmost respect. Kabir says, give some gift, according to your means.
खाली साधु न बिदा करु, सुन लीजै सब कोय। कहैं कबीर कछु भेंट धरु, जो तेजे घर होय।।५९३।।
Do not send a saint away empty-handed; listen everyone. Kabir says, offer some gift according to your means, which brings blessings to your home.
साधु दरशन महाफल, कोटि यज्ञ फल लेह। इन मन्दिर को का पड़ी, नगर शुद्ध करि लेह।।५९४।।
The sight of a saint brings immense rewards, greater than the fruits of a million sacrifices. What need is there for temples? Purify the city by their presence.
बिरछा कबहुं न फल भखै, नदी न संचवै नीर। परमारथ के कारने, साधु धरा शरीर।।५९६।।
A tree does not eat its own fruit, and a river does not drink its own water. Similarly, a saint does not seek personal gain; he holds his body for the sake of altruism.
सुख देवै दुख को हरै, दूर करै अपराध। कहैं कबीर वह कब मिलै, परम स्नेही साध।।५९७।।
He who gives joy, removes sorrow, and eradicates sins, when will we find such a loving saint, as Kabir describes?
साधु सोई जानिये, चलै साधु की चाल। परमारथ करता रहै, बोलै बचन रसाल।।५९८।।
One should recognize a saint by his actions. A saint continues to do good and speaks words that are full of nectar.
साधु साधु सब बड़े हैं, जस पस्ते का खेत। कोई विवेकी लाल हैं, और सेत का सेत।।५९९।।
All saints are great, like fields of crops. Some are wise and pure, and some are full of virtues.
इन्द्रिय मन निग्रह करन, हिरदै कोमल होय। सदा शुद्ध आचार में, रहे विचार में सोय।।६०१।।
To control the senses and mind, and to keep the heart gentle. Always remain in pure conduct and thoughts.
कोटि-कोटि तीरथ कर, कोटि-कोटि करु धाम। जब लग साधु न सेवई, तब लग काचा काम।।६०२।।
Visiting millions of pilgrimage sites and performing countless rituals are futile as long as one does not serve a saint.
सुनिये पार जो पाइया, छाजन भोजन आनि। कहैं कबीर संतन को, देत न कीजै कानि।।६०३।।
Listen, if you have achieved the other shore, provide shade and food. Kabir says, do not let the saints go without offering something.
कुलवंता कोटिक मिले, पंडित कोटि पचीस। सुपच भक्त की पनहि में, तुलै न काहू शीश।।६०७।।
Even if one meets countless noble and learned individuals, none can compare to a true devotee, who is unparalleled.
जौन चाल संसार की, तौन साधु को नाहिं। डिंभ चाल करनी करै, साधु कहो मत ताहि।।६०८।।
Whatever is the trend of the world, a saint does not follow it. Do not call someone a saint who practices hypocrisy and deceit.
सावधान और शीलता, सदा प्रफुल्लित गात। निर्विकार गंभीर मत, धीरज दया बरसात।।६०९।।
Be alert and maintain modesty, always keep a cheerful appearance. Remain detached and serious in your thinking, and let patience and compassion shower upon you.
रक्त छाड़ि पय को गहै, ज्यौरे गऊ का बच्छ। औगुण छांड़ै गुण गहै, ऐसा साधु लच्छ।।६११।।
A saint should leave aside the blood (sacrifices) and accept milk (nourishment) like a calf. He should abandon vices and embrace virtues.
तूटै बरत अकास सों, कौन सकत है झेल। साधु सती और सूर का, अनी ऊपर का खेल।।६१२।।
Just as one cannot bear the destruction of the sky, so too is the play of the saint, sage, and hero beyond ordinary understanding.
साधु सती और सूरमा, राखा रहै न ओट। माथा बांधि पताक सों, नेजा घालैं चोट।।६१४।।
A saint, sage, and warrior do not hide behind a shield. With their heads adorned with flags, they face all challenges bravely.
जौन भाव ऊपर रहै, भितर बसावै सोय। भीतर और न बसावई, ऊपर और न होय।।६१५।।
Whatever feeling remains above should reside within as well. One who does not have it within cannot have it above.
और देव नहिं चित्त बसै, मन गुरु चरण बसाय। स्वल्पाहार भोजन करु, तृष्णा दूर पराय।।६१६।।
Do not let any other deity occupy your mind, let your mind rest at the Guru’s feet. Consume minimal food and dispel cravings.
बंधा पानी निरमला, जो टूक गहिरा होय। साधु जन बैठा भला, जो कुछ साधन होय।।६१७।।
Water that is bound is pure if it is deep. Similarly, a saint is noble if he has the means to aid others.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, जाका पूरा मंग। विपत्ति पड़ै छाड़ै नहीं, चढ़ै चौगुना रंग।।६१८।।
A saint should be one whose desires are complete. He does not abandon his path in the face of adversity and his color (virtue) increases fourfold.
संत न छाड़ै सन्तता, कोटिक मिलै असन्त। मलय भुवंगम बेधिया, शीतलता न तजन्त।।६२०।।
A saint does not abandon saintliness even if millions of non-saints are found. Like the Malaya breeze that pierces through, the saint does not give up his coolness.
जाति न पूछो साधु की, पूछि लीजिये ज्ञान। मोल करो तलवार का, पड़ा रहन दो म्यान।।६२१।।
Do not inquire about the caste of a saint, but ask about their knowledge. The value of the sword should be assessed, not the scabbard.
साधु तो हीरा भया, न फूटै घन खाय। न वह बिनसै कुम्भ ज्यों, ना वह आवै जाय।।६२२।।
A saint is like a diamond, which does not break even if struck by a hammer. He neither perishes like a clay pot nor does he come and go.
साधु चाल जु चलाई, साधु कहावै सोय। बिन साधन तो सुधि नहीं, साधु कहां ते होय।।६२५।।
One who follows the saintly path is truly a saint. Without the means, there is no wisdom; thus, a saint cannot exist without them.
हांसी खेल हराम है, जो जन रमते राम। माया मन्दिर इस्तरी, नहिं साधु का काम।।६२६।।
Laughter and play are forbidden for those who revel in Ram. The temple of illusion and women’s allure is not the work of a saint.
हयबर गयबर सघन घन, छत्रपति की नारि। तासु पटतरे ना तुले, हरिजन की पनिहारि।।६२७।।
The noble woman of a king cannot be compared to a common woman. The woman who serves the saints is incomparable to her.
सब वन तो चन्दन नहीं, शूरा के दल नाहिं। सब समुद्र मोती नहीं, यों साधु जग माहिं।।६२८।।
Not all forests contain sandalwood, and not all groups are brave. Not all seas contain pearls, and similarly, not all are saints in the world.
साधु बिहंगम सुरसरी, चले बिहंगम चाल। जो जो गलियां नीकसे, सो सो करे निहाल।।६३१।।
A saint is like a bird moving freely in a river. Wherever he goes, he makes the place flourish.
जो मानुष गृह धर्म युत, राखै शील विचार। गुरुमुख बानी साधु संग, मन वच सेवा सार।।६३३।।
A person who upholds domestic and moral values with purity and thought is true. The essence of service is found in following the guru's words and associating with saints.
गिरही सेवै साधु को, भाव भक्ति आनंद। कहैं कबीर बैरागी को, निरबानी निरदुन्द।।६३५।।
A householder who serves the saint with devotion and joy is truly blessed. Kabir says that the renunciant who is indifferent is devoid of wisdom.
तन को जोगी सब करै, मन को करैं न कोय। सहजै सब सिधि पाइये, जो मन जोगी होय।।६३८।।
Everyone can practice physical asceticism, but no one practices mental discipline. The true achievement is attained effortlessly by those who discipline the mind.
बोली ठोली मसखरी, हंसी खेल हराम। मद माया और इस्तरी, नहिं सन्तन के काम।।६३९।।
Chatter, mockery, laughter, and play are forbidden. The intoxication of illusion and women’s allure have no place in the work of saints.
बैरागी बिरकत भला, गिरही चित्त उदार। दोऊ चूकि खाली पड़े, ताको वार न पार।।६४०।।
Renunciants who are detached are good, but householders with a generous heart are also commendable. Both, if they are devoid of essence, are ultimately of no use.
मांगन मरण समान है, तोहि दई मैं सीख। कहैं कबीर समुझाय के, मति कोई मांगै भीख।।६४४।।
Begging is akin to death; this is what I teach you. Kabir says, those who ask for alms are like those who beg for their lives.
सहज मिलै सो दूध है, मांगि मिले सो पानि। कहैं कबीर वह रक्त है, जामें ऐंचातानि।।६४५।।
What comes easily is like milk, while what is sought is like water. Kabir says that what is sought with effort is like blood, filled with hardship.
उदर समाता अन्न ले, तनहि समाता चीर। अधिकहिं संग्रह ना करै, तिसका नाम फकीर।।६४७।।
Taking enough food for the stomach is fine, and covering the body with sufficient clothing is acceptable. One who does not gather excess is called a true renunciant.
भुवंगम बास न बेधई, चन्दन दोष न लाय। सब अंग तो विष सों भरा, अमृत कहां समाय।।६४९।।
The bhujanga (serpent) does not harm, and sandalwood does not have faults. If the body is filled with poison, where can nectar reside?
कबीर संगत साधु की, कभी न निष्फल जाय। जो पै बोवै भूनिके, फूल फलै अघाय।।६५०।।
The company of saints is never fruitless. Those who sow seeds in fertile soil will yield abundant flowers and fruits.
सन्त सुरसरी गंग जल, आनि पखारा अंग। मैले से निरमल भये, साधु जन के संग।।६६०।।
The water of the saintly river Ganges purifies the body. The company of the saints cleanses one from impurities.
कबीर संगत साधु की, नित प्रति कीजै जाय। दुरमति दूर बहावसी, देसी सुमति बताय।।६६५।।
Kabir advises to engage in the company of saints regularly. This will dispel evil thoughts and bring wisdom.
कबीर संगत साधु की, जौ भी भूसी खाय। खीर खांड भोजन मिले, साकट संग न जाय।।६६६।।
Kabir suggests that even if one eats simple food in the company of saints, it's better than indulging in rich food in bad company.
कबीर संगत साधु की, ज्यों गन्धी की बास। जो कुछ गन्धी दे नहीं, तो भी वास सुवास।।६६७।।
The company of saints is like the fragrance of perfume, even if the perfume is not applied, the fragrance spreads.
साहिब के दरबार में, कमी काहु की नाहि। बन्दा मौज न पावहीं, चूक चाकरी माहिं।।६६८।।
In the Lord's court, there is no lack of anything. But the servant does not experience joy due to neglecting their duties.
शीलवन्त सुर ज्ञान मत, अति उदार चित्त होय। लज्जावान अति निछलता, कोमल हिरदा सोय।।६६९।।
A person of good character possesses deep knowledge, a generous heart, humility, and a pure, gentle nature.
यह मन ताको दीजिए, सांचा सेवक होय। सिर ऊपर आरा सहै, तऊ न दूजा होय।।६७०।।
Surrender your mind to the true servant of God, who would endure any pain but never deviate from the path of truth.
विंतदय धरमक ध्वजा, धीरजवान प्रमान। सन्तोषी सुख दायका, सेवक परम सुजान।।६७१।।
The flag of righteousness is held by the patient; contentment brings joy, and a wise servant is truly skilled.
गुरुमुख गुरु चितवन रहे, जैसे मणिहिं भुजंग। कहैं कबीर बिसरें नहीं, यह गुरुमुख को अंग।।६७४।।
A disciple should always keep their focus on the Guru, just as a snake is always focused on the gem. Kabir says, this is a true disciple's duty.
फल कारन सेवा करै, निशि-दिन जांचै राम। कहें कबीर सेवक नहीं, चाहै चौगुन दाम।।६७५।।
If one serves for the sake of reward, constantly seeking divine validation, Kabir says, such a person is not a true servant.
गुरु आज्ञा मानै नहीं, चले अटपटी चाल। लोक वेद दोनों गये, आये सिर पर काल।।६७७।।
If one disobeys the Guru's command and follows a misguided path, they lose both worldly and spiritual knowledge, and doom awaits them.
सेवक सेवा में रहै, सेवक कहिये सोय। कहैं कबीर सेवा बिना, सेवक कभी न होय।।६७९।।
A true servant is one who remains devoted to service. Kabir says, without service, one cannot be called a servant.
निरबन्धन बंधा रहै, बंधा निरबंध होय। कर्म करै करता नहीं, दास कहावै सोय।।६८५।।
The one who is bound by ties is bound by no ties at all. A person who does not perform actions is called a true servant.
निहकामी निरमल दशा, नित चरणों की आश। तीरथ इच्छा ता करै, कब आवै वे दास।।६८८।।
One who is free from desires and maintains a pure state, always hoping for the Guru's presence, performs pilgrimage as a true devotee.
सुख दुख सिर ऊपरे सहै, कबहु न छाड़े संग। रंग न लागै और का, व्यापै सतगुरु रंग।।६८९।।
One who endures both pleasure and pain without abandoning their association, is dyed in the true color of the Guru, which is beyond all other hues.
दासातन हिरदै बसै, साधुन सों आधीन। कहैं कबीर सो दास है, प्रेम भक्ति लवलीन।।६९२।।
A true servant resides in the heart and is devoted to the saints. Kabir says such a servant is absorbed in love and devotion.
दास कहावन कठिन है, मैं दासन का दास। अब तो होय रहूं, पांव तले की घास।।६९३।।
To be called a servant is difficult; I am a servant of servants. Now, I remain like the grass underfoot.
कबीर कुल सोई भला, जो कुल उपजै दास। जा कुल दास न ऊपजे, सो कुल आक पलास।।६९४।।
Kabir says, a family is truly noble if it produces a servant. A family where no servant is born is like a barren wasteland.
कबीर गुरु की भक्ति का, मन में बहुत हुलास। मन-मनसा माजै नहीं, होन चहत है दास।।६९७।।
Kabir says, devotion to the Guru brings great joy to the mind. If the mind is not pure, one cannot be a true servant.
भक्ति भाव भादौ नदी, सबहि चली घहराय। सरिता सोई सराहिये, जेठ मास ठहराय।।६९९।।
The feeling of devotion flows like the river in the rainy season, widespread and abundant. The river that flows in the summer is truly commendable.
भक्ति-बीज पलटै नहीं, जो जुग जाय अनन्त। ऊंच नीच घर अवतरै, होय सन्त का सन्त।।७१३।।
The seed of devotion does not change, even if ages pass. It transcends all distinctions of high and low, as it is the true saint’s quality.
भक्ति सोई जो भाव सों, इक मन चित को राख। सांच शील सो खेलिए, मैं तें दोऊ नाख।।७१८।।
True devotion is that which remains in a single mind and heart. Let us play with true virtue; I do not desire either of the two.
भक्ति पंथ बहु कठिन है, रती न चालै खोट। निराधार का खेल है, अधर थार की चोट।।७२०।।
The path of devotion is very difficult; it does not tolerate falsehood. It is a play of the unsupported, a blow to the unsteady.
भक्ति गेंद चौगान की, भावै कोइ लै जाय। कहैं कबीर कछु भेद नहिं, कहां रंक कहं राय।।७२१।।
Devotion is like a game of ball; anyone who desires can take part. Kabir says there is no distinction; whether one is a pauper or a prince, all can partake.
भक्ति दुवारा सांकरा, राई दशवें भाय। मन तो मैंगल होय रहा, कैसे आवै जाय।।७२३।।
Devotion is the pillar of support; without it, all efforts are futile. If the mind is impure, how can it achieve liberation?
नाम जो रत्ती एक है, पाप जु रत्ती हजार। आध रत्ती घट संचरै, जारि करे सब छार।।७३३।।
The name is worth a single unit, whereas sin is worth a thousand units. A half-unit of sin spreads throughout the entire body, burning everything to ashes.
सांस सफल सो जानिये, जो सुमिरन में जाय। और सांस यौं ही गये, करि बहुत उपाय।।७३७।।
Consider the breath successful if it leads to remembrance. Otherwise, despite all efforts, if the breath goes on as usual, it is not successful.
लेने को गुरु नाम है, देने को अन्न दान।। तरने को आधीनता, बूड़न को अभिमान।।७३८।।
To receive, there is the name of the Guru; to give, there is the offering of food. For crossing over, there is humility; for sinking, there is pride.
नाम रतन धन पाय के, गांठी बांध न खोल। नहिं पाटनहिं पार भी, नहिं गाहक नहिं मोल।।७३९।।
The name is a precious jewel, but once it is obtained, it cannot be bound or sold. It cannot be used for trading or profit.
जबहि नाम हिरद धरा, भया पाप का नाश। मानो चिनगा आग को, परो परान घास।।७५४।।
When the name is held in the heart, sins are eradicated. It is like placing dry grass on a burning fire; it extinguishes the fire.
सुमिरन सों मन जब लगै, ज्ञानाकुस दे सीस। कहैं कबीर डोलै नहीं, निश्चै बिस्वा बीस।।७६२।।
When the mind is engaged in remembrance, it wears the crown of wisdom. Kabir says, it does not waver; it certainly remains steadfast.
राम जपत कुष्टी भला, चुइ चुइ पैर जु चाम। कंचन देह किस काम की, जो मुख नाहिं राम।।७७५।।
Chanting Ram is good even if it is done while wearing a thread. What use is a golden body if it does not speak of Ram?
वाद करै सो जानिये, निगरे का वह काम। संतो को फुरसत नहीं, सुमिरन करते राम।।७७७।।
One who engages in arguments is a miser. The saints have no time for disputes; they are busy remembering Ram.
पूंजि मेरी राम है, जाते सदा निहाल। कबीर गरजे पुरुष बल, चोरी करै न काल।।७८२।।
My wealth is Ram, who is always prosperous. Kabir roars like a strong man; time cannot steal from him.
कबीर आपन राम कहि, औरन राम कहाय। जा मुख राम न नीसरै, ता मुख राम कहाय।।७८७।।
Kabir says, call it your own Ram, and others call it Ram as well. If Ram does not appear on the lips, then what is the use of that mouth calling Ram?
कबीर हरि के नाम में, सुरति रहै करतार। ता मुख से मोती झरे, हीरा अनंत अपार।।७९०।।
Kabir says, in the name of Hari, the consciousness remains on the Creator. From that mouth, pearls and infinite diamonds flow.
थोड़ा सुमिरन बहुत सुख, जो करि जानै कोय। हरदी लग न फिटकरी, चोखा ही रंग होय।।७९४।।
A little remembrance brings great happiness if one truly understands. Turmeric alone is not enough; it is the purity that determines the color.
प्रेम पांवरी पहिरि के, धीरज कज्जल देह। शील सिंदूर भराय के, तब पिय का सुख लेय।।८००।।
Wear the garment of love, and patience will be the eyeliner for the body. When adorned with the vermilion of virtue, then enjoy the happiness of the beloved.
प्रीति ताहि सो कीजिये, जो आप समाना होय। कबहुक जो अवगुन पड़ै, गुन ही लहै समोय।।८११।।
Love is for that which merges with the self. When faults arise, one should absorb the virtues and merge with them.
प्रेम भाव इक चाहिए, भेष अनेक बनाय। भावै घर में वास कर, भावै बन में जाय।।८१६।।
One needs only the essence of love, though many disguises are created. Love resides in the heart, but it also manifests in the forest (or natural state).
प्रेम प्रीति से जो मिले, ताको मिलिये धाय। कपट राखिके जो मिले, तासे मिलै बलाय।।८२४।।
Meet those who come with genuine love and affection. Avoid those who come with deceit and falsehood.
आगि आंचि सहना सुगम, सुगम खड़क की धार। नेह निबाहन एक रस, महा कठिन ब्यौहार।।८२६।।
Enduring fire and heat is easy compared to enduring the edge of a sword. Maintaining love with consistency is a very difficult task.
प्रीति पुरानि न होत है, जो उत्तम से लाग। सो बरसां जल में रहै, पथर न छोड़े आग।।८२७।।
Old affection does not endure, which binds with the best. It remains in water for years, but does not leave the stone untouched by fire.
सजन सनेही बहुत हैं, सुख में मिले अनेक। बिपत्ति पड़े दुख बांटिये, सो लाखन में एक।।८३०।।
There are many friends and beloveds in times of joy. But in times of calamity and sorrow, a true friend is rare.
छिनहि चढ छिन उतरै, सो तो प्रेम न होय। औघट घाट पिंजर बसै, प्रेम कहावै सोय।।८३१।।
That which rises and falls momentarily is not true love. True love is steady and stable, like a vessel or container.
कबीर खेत किसान का, मिरगन खाया झारि।। खेत बिचारा क्या करै, धनी करै नहिं वारि।।८३७।।
Kabir says, the field belongs to the farmer, but the deer have eaten the crop. What can the helpless field do? The owner does not care about it.
कबीर यह तन जात है, सकै तो ठौर लगाव। कै सेवा कर साधु की, कै गुरु के गुन गाव।।८४१।।
Kabir says, this body is transient; if possible, find a place for it. Serve the saints and sing the praises of the guru.
कबीर केवल नाम कह, शुद्ध गरीबी चाल। कूर बड़ाई बूड़सी, भारी परसी झाल।।८६७।।
Kabir says, speak only the name of God and live a life of pure simplicity. False pride will drown you like a heavy stone in water.
आये हैं तो जायेंगे, राजा रंक फकीर। एक सिंहासन चढ़ि चले, एक बांधे जात जंजीर।।८७८।।
Everyone who comes must leave, whether king, pauper, or saint. One ascends the throne, and another leaves bound in chains.
कबीर थोड़ा जीवना, माढै बहुत मढ़ान। सबही ऊभा पंथ सिर, राव रंक सुलतान।।९२१।।
Kabir says life is short, and the world is very deceptive. All paths are open, whether for kings or commoners.
जो जल बाढ़े नाव में, घर में बाढ़ै दाम। दोनों हाथ उलीचिये, यही सयानों का काम।।९४०।।
If water floods the boat, and money floods the home, Use both hands to bail out the water; this is the wise course of action.
जहां न जाको गुन लहै, तहां न ताको ठांव। धोबी बसके क्या करै, दिगम्बर के गांव।।९४२।।
Where one does not find any virtues, there is no place for them. What can the washerman do in the village of the naked ascetic?
मांगन को भल बोलना, चोरन को भल चूप। माली को भल बरसनो, धोबी को भल धूप।।९४५।।
It is good to speak kindly to the beggar, silence is good for the thief. Rain is good for the gardener, and sunlight is good for the washerman.
बालों जैसी किरकिरी, ऊजल जैसी धूप। ऐसी मीठी कछु नहीं, जसी मीठी चूप।।९४६।।
Like the irritation of lice, like the bright sunlight. There is nothing as sweet as silence, like the sweetness of quietude.
रितु बसंत याचक भया, हरखि दिया द्रुम पात। ताते नव पल्लव भया, दिया दर नहिं जात।।९४७।।
The season of spring has become a beggar, delighting the trees with its leaves. From this, new shoots have emerged, and no one has gone to the door.
सत ही में सत बांटई, रोटी म ते टूक। कहैं कबीर ता दास को, कबहुं न आवै चूक।।९५१।।
In truth, truth is shared, like pieces of bread are divided. Says Kabir to the servant, never let there be any error.
दुरबल को न सताइये, जाकी मोटी हाय। बिना जीव की सांस से, लाह भसम ह्वै जाय।।९५८।।
Do not oppress the weak, for their deep sighs. The melted wax will turn to ashes with the breath of the lifeless.
कबीर आप ठगाइये, और न ठगिये कोय। आप ठगे सुख ऊपजै, और ठगे दुख होय।।९५९।।
Kabir says, let yourself be deceived, do not deceive others. Deceiving others brings sorrow, while being deceived brings peace.
देह खेह हो जायेगी, कौन कहेगा देह। निश्चय कर उपकार ही, जीवन का फल येह।।९६८।।
The body will turn to dust, who will then call it a body? Know for sure, only good deeds are the true fruits of life.
जैसा भोजन खइये, तैसा ही मन होय। जैसा पानी पीजिये, तैसी बानी होय।।९७१।।
As is the food you eat, so becomes your mind. As is the water you drink, so becomes your speech.
धर्म किये धन ना घट, नदी न घटै नीर। अपने आंखो देखि ले, यों कथि कहहिं कबीर।।९७८।।
Righteous deeds do not diminish wealth, just as the river's water does not decrease. See it with your own eyes, thus says Kabir.
कहैं कबीर देय तू, जब लग तेरी देह। देह खेह हो जायेगी, कौन कहेगा देह।।९७९।।
Kabir says, give while you still have your body. When the body turns to dust, who will ask for it?
जा तोको काटा बोवै, ताहि बोवै तू फूल। तुझको फूल का फूल है, वाको है तिरशूल।।९८६।।
To the one who sows thorns for you, sow flowers in return. You will receive flowers, while they will receive thorns.
गारी ही से ऊपजै, कलह कष्ट औ मीच। हरि चले सो सन्त है, लागि मरै सो नीच।।९८७।।
From abuse arise conflicts, pain, and destruction. Those who walk with Hari are saints; those who fall are lowly.
हाड़ बड़ा हरि भजन करि, द्रव्य बड़ा कछु देह। अकल बड़ी उपकार करि, जीवन का फल येहि।।९८८।।
Use your body to chant Hari's name, use wealth to give. Use your intellect to do good deeds; this is the fruit of life.
कुटिल वचन सबतें बुरा, जारि करै सब छार। साधु वचन जल रूप है, बरसै अमृत धार।।९९१।।
Harsh words are the worst; they burn everything to ashes. The words of the saint are like water; they rain nectar.
कुटिल बचन नहिं बोलिये, शीतल बैन ले चीन्हि। गंगा जल शीतल भया, परबत फोड़ तीन्हि।।९९२।।
Do not speak harsh words, recognize the value of soft speech. The Ganga water became cool, but it broke through mountains.
खोद खाद धरती सहै, काट कूट बनराय। कुटिल बचन साधु सहै, और से सहा न जाय।।९९३।।
The earth endures digging and cutting, the forest endures chopping. The saint endures harsh words, but they are unbearable for others.
करक गड़न दुरजन बचन, रहै सन्त जन टारि। बिजुली परै समुद्र में, कहा सकेगी जारि।।९९८।।
The harsh words of the wicked may prick, but the saints let them pass. Just as lightning strikes the ocean, but it cannot burn it.
कागा काको धन हरै, कोयल काको देत। मीठा शब्द सुनाय के, जग अपनो करि लेत।।१००७।।
Who does the crow rob? Whom does the cuckoo give? By speaking sweet words, one wins over the world.
सन्त सन्तोषी सर्वदा, शब्दहिं भेद विचार। सतगुरु के परताप ते, सहज सील मतसार।।१०१०।।
A true saint is always content, understanding the depth of words. By the grace of the true guru, one attains a simple, virtuous, and pure essence.
जिभ्या जिन बिस में करी, तिन बस कियो जहान। नहिं तो औगुन ऊपजे, कहि सब संत सुजान।।१०११।।
Those who control their tongue, control the world. Otherwise, vices arise, as all wise saints say.
सहज तराजू आनि कै, सब रस देखा तोलि। सब रस माहीं जीभ रस, जु कोय जानै बोलि।।१०१८।।
Bringing the scale of simplicity, all tastes were weighed. Among all tastes, the taste of the tongue is the best for those who know how to speak.
बोलै बोल विचारि के, बैठे ठौर संभारि। कहैं कबीर ता दास को, कबह न आवै हारि।।१०२७।।
Speak only after careful thought, and act with caution. Kabir says, such a servant of God never faces defeat.
अजहूं तेरा सब मिटै, जो जग मानै हार। घर में झगरा होत है, सो घर डारो जार।।१०३५।।
Even now you can overcome everything if you accept defeat in the world. If there is conflict in your house, burn it down and leave.
चहुं दिस ठाढ़े सूरमा, हाथ मिले हथियार। सबही यह तन देखता, काल ले गया मार।।१०५४।।
Warriors stand ready in all directions, weapons in hand. Yet, even they watch as Death takes their body away.
घाट जगाती धर्मराय, गुरुमुख ले पहिचान। छाप बिना गुरु नाम के, सांकट रहा निदान।।१०७४।।
The riverbank brings forth righteousness, recognized by the Guru's follower. Without the Guru's name, there is no resolution to the troubles.
हाथों परबत फाड़ते, समुन्दर घट भराय। ते मुनिवर धरती गले, का कोई गरब कराय।।१०८३।।
Mountains are torn by hands, and the oceans fill up. The sage embraces the earth, what can pride achieve?
स्वारथ का सबको सगा, सारा ही जग जान। बिन स्वारथ आदर करै, सो नर चतुर सुजान।।१०८९।।
Everyone is dear to themselves, the whole world knows this. One who shows respect without self-interest is truly wise and learned.
निज स्वारथ के कारनै, सेव करै संसार। बिन स्वारथ भक्ति करै, सो भावे करतार।।१०९३।।
One serves the world due to personal interest. One who serves with devotion without self-interest is loved by the Creator.
आप स्वारथी मेदिनी, भक्ति स्वारथी दास। कबीर जन परमार्थी, डारी तन की आस।।१०९४।।
You are self-interested earth, devotion is self-interested servant. Kabir's followers are selfless, abandoning attachment to the body.
प्रीत रीत सब अर्थ की, परमारथ की नाहिं। कहैं कबीर परमारथी, बिरला कोई कलि माहि।।१०९५।।
Love for worldly methods is all for gain, there is no true selflessness. Kabir says, in this age, true selflessness is rare.
परमारथ पाको रतन, कबहुं न दीजै पीठ। स्वारथ सेमन फूल है, कली अपूठी पीठ।।१०९६।।
True selflessness is a precious gem, never give it up. Self-interest is like a flower, while the bud is unripe.
सुख के संगी स्वारथी, दुख मे रहते दूर। कहैं कबीर परमारथी, दुख सुख सदा हजूर।।१०९७।।
The one who is selfish stays away in times of sorrow, while the selfless one remains present in both joy and sorrow.
जो कोय करे सो स्वारथी, अरस परस गुन देत। बिन किया करै सो सुरमा, परमारथ के हेत।।१०९८।।
The one who does something for personal gain is selfish, giving superficial virtues. One who acts without any selfish motive is a true hero, for the sake of selflessness.
स्वारथ सूका लाकड़ा, छांह बिहूना सूल। पीपल परमारथ भजो, सुख सागर को मूल।।१०९९।।
Self-interest is like a dry stick, without shade or comfort. Worship the Peepal tree of selflessness, which is the source of the ocean of happiness.
मरुं पर मांगू नहीं, अपने तन के काज। परमारथ के कारनै, मोहि न आवै लाज।।११००।।
I do not beg for anything in the desert of life or for personal needs. For the sake of selflessness, I feel no shame.
धन रहै न जोबन रहै, रहै न गांव न ठांव। कबीर जग में जस रहै, करिदे किसी का काम।।११०१।।
Wealth and youth do not last, nor do villages or places. Kabir says that reputation in the world remains only by serving others.
मन चलतां तन भी चलै, ताते मन को घेर। तन मन दोऊ बसि करै, होय राइ सुमेर।।११०४।।
When the mind is restless, the body also becomes restless. When both the mind and body are under control, one can attain the heights of Mount Sumeru.
पहिले यह मन कागा था, करता जीवन घात। अब तो मन हंसा भया, मोती चुनि-चुनि खात।।११०७।।
Earlier this mind was like a crow, causing harm to life. Now the mind has become like a swan, consuming pearls one by one.
कबीर मन परबत भया, अब मैं पाया जान। टांकी लागी प्रेम की, निकसी कंचन खान।।११०८।।
Kabir says that the mind has become like a mountain, and I have realized this. The reservoir of love has yielded a treasure of gold.
काया कजरी बन अहै, मन कुंजर महमन्त। अंकुस ज्ञान रतन है, फेरै साधु सन्त।।११०९।।
The body is like a dark cloud, and the mind is like an elephant. The goad of knowledge is with the saints and sages.
अपने अपने चोर को, सब कोय डारै मार। मेरा चोर मुझको मिलै, सरबस डारुं वार।।११११।।
Everyone punishes the thief within others, but the thief within me I punish myself. I punish everyone with this realization.
कबीर मन तो एक है, भावै जहां लगाय। भावै गुरु की भक्ति कर, भावे विषय कमाय।।१११२।।
Kabir says the mind is one; it follows where it is inclined. If it inclines towards devotion to the Guru, it will also incline towards worldly pursuits.
तन का बैरी कोइ नहीं, जो मन शीतल होय। तूं आपा को डारि दे, दया करे सब कोय।।१११३।।
There is no enemy of the body if the mind is calm. When you abandon ego, everyone becomes compassionate.
मेरा मन मकरन्द था, करता बहुत बिगार। सूधा होय मारग चला, हरि आगे हम लार।।१११६।।
My mind was like honey, causing much disturbance. When it became pure, I found the path, and I seek refuge at the feet of the Lord.
कबीर मनहि गयंद है, आंकुस दे दे राखु। विष की बेली परिहरो, अमृत का फल चाखु।।१११७।।
Kabir says the mind is wild; keep it under control with discipline. Abandon the poisonous creeper and taste the fruit of immortality.
महमंता मन मारि ले, घट ही मांही घेर। जल ही चालै पीठ दे, आंकूस दे दे फेर।।१११९।।
Kill the egoistic mind and surround yourself with purity. Let the water flow from the back and control it with a discipline.
मन के मते न चालिये, मन के मते अनेक। जो मन पर असवार है, सो साधु कोय एक।।११२८।।
Do not follow the whims of the mind, which has many desires. The one who is disciplined over the mind is truly a sage.
कबीर मन मरकट भया, नेक न कहुं ठहराय। राम नाम बांधै बिना, जित भावै तित जाय।।११३०।।
Kabir says the mind is like a monkey, and it does not settle down in goodness. Without holding onto the name of Ram, it goes wherever it desires.
मन ही को परमोधिये, मन ही को उपदेस। जो यह मन को बसि करै, सीष होय सब देस।।११५१।।
The mind is the supreme teacher and the mind itself is the guide. He who controls the mind becomes the master of all lands.
मन नहिं मारा करि सका, न मन पांच प्रहारि। सील सांच सरधा नहीं, अजह् इन्द्रि उघारि।।११५७।।
The mind cannot be killed by force, nor can it be conquered by five attacks. Without virtue, truth, and faith, the senses remain uncovered.
मन के हारै हार है, मन के जीते जीत। कहैं कबीर गुरु पाइये, मन ही के प्रतीत।।११६०।।
Victory and defeat are determined by the mind; the mind’s defeat is defeat, and the mind’s victory is victory. Kabir says, one finds the guru through the mind’s perception.
माया जात है, सुनो शब्द निज मोर। सुखियों के घर साध जन, सूमौं के घर चोर।।११६४।।
Illusion is fleeting; hear my words. In the homes of the content, there are saints, and in the homes of the rich, there are thieves.
माया जगवे कौन गन, अंत न आवै काज। सोई नाम जोगावहु, भये परमारथ साज।।११७०।।
What is the benefit of illusion in the world? It never ends. Only the name of the divine is worthy; it leads to ultimate welfare.
सुकृत लागै साधु की, बादि विमुख की जाय। कै तो तल गाड़ी रहै, कै कोय और खाय।।११७५।।
Virtue is attributed to a saint, but after that, some become indifferent. Some stay near, while others benefit differently.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, आई देई चलाय। दोस न लागै तासु को, शिर की टरै बलाय।।११७६।।
One should seek a saint who guides well and is free from faults. To such a person, one should bow down with reverence.
माया देाय प्रकार की, जो जानै सो खाय। एक मिलावै राम को, एक नरक ले जाय।।११८३।।
Illusion comes in two forms: one that leads to God and one that takes you to hell. The wise understand and choose the right path.
माया दासी सन्त की, साकट की शिर ताज। सांकट की सिर मानिनी, सन्तों सहेली लाज।।११९२।।
Illusion is a maidservant to saints, but it crowns the miser. Illusion, in times of crisis, is honored as a friend, but among saints, it is a source of shame.
जिनको सांई रंग दिया, कबहुं न होय कुरंग। दिन-दिन बानी आगरी, चढ़ै सवाया रंग।।१२०४।।
Those who are dyed in the color of the Lord never become impure. Day by day, their speech becomes purer, and they grow in divine hue.
गार अंगार क्रोध झल, निन्दा धूवां होय। इत तीनों को परिहरै, साधु कहावै सोय।।१२३८।।
Anger is like burning embers, and slander is like smoke. One who abandons these three is called a saint.
दसौं दिसा में क्रोध की, उठी अपरबल आग। सीत संगत साध की, तहां उबरिये भाग।।१२४२।।
In all directions, the fire of anger burns intensely. One can escape this only by associating with a saint.
मान बड़ाई कूकरी, सन्तन खेदी जान। पांडव जग पावन भया, सुपच बिराजै आन।।१२५६।।
The pride of honor is false; wise people understand this. The Pandavas made the world sacred, while the wicked remain away.
बड़ा हुआ तो क्या हुआ, जैसे पेड़ खजूर। पंथी को छाया नहीं, फल लागे अति दूर।।१२६०।।
What is the use of being great if one is like a date palm tree? It gives no shade to travelers and its fruits are very far.
मान बड़ाई कूकरी, धर्मराय दरबार। दीन लकुटिया बाहिरै, सब जग खाया फार।।१२६२।।
Pride and greatness are like a dog's collar in the court of righteousness. The poor and humble are left outside, while the whole world is consumed by this pride.
बड़ा बड़ाई ना करे, छोटा बहु इतराय। ज्यौं प्यादा फरजी भया, टेढ़ा टेढ़ा जाय।।१२६५।।
A great person should not boast, and a small person should not be overly proud. Just as a fake person becomes crooked and misguided.
कंचन तजना सहज है, सहज तिरिया का नेह। मान बड़ाई ईरषा, दुरलभ तजनी येह।।१२६६।।
Leaving gold is easy; easy is the love of a simple woman. To renounce pride, greatness, and envy is very difficult.
बड़ी बड़ाई ऊंट की, लादे जहं लग सांस। मुहकम सलिता लादि के, ऊपर चढ़े परास।।१२७३।।
The pride of a camel is great, carrying burdens wherever it goes. With a heavy load of pride, it climbs over everything.
लेने को हरिनाम है, देने को अंनदान। तरने को है दीनता, बूड़न को अभिमान।।१२७९।।
To receive is the name of God, to give is charity. To be saved requires humility, while pride leads to downfall.
निन्दक दूर न कीजिये, कीजै आदर मान। निर्मल तन मन सब करै, बके आन ही आन।।१२८१।।
Do not drive away the critic; respect and honor them. Keep the body and mind pure, and continue to honor them.
निन्दक तो है नाक बिन, निसदिन विष्ठा खाय। गुन छाड़े अवगुन गहै, तिसका यही सुभाय।।१२८२।।
A critic is like a leech; it feeds on waste every day. Abandon virtues and hold onto vices, such is the nature of the critic.
अड़सठ तीरथ निन्दक न्हाई, देह पलोसे मैल न जाई। छप्पन कोटि धरती फिरि आवै, तो भी निन्दक नरकहिं जावे।।१२८३।।
Even if a critic bathes at sixty-eight pilgrimage sites, the dirt of the body will not be removed. Even if they roam over millions of lands, they will still go to hell.
माखी गहै कुवास को, फूल वास नहिं लेयै। मधुमाखी हैं साधु जन, पुष्प बास चित देयं।।१२८५।।
A fly is attracted to filth and does not care for flowers. But a honeybee, like a saint, is attracted to the fragrance of flowers.
निन्दक तो है नाक बिन, सोहै नकटो माहिं। साधु जन गुरु भक्त जो, तिनमें सोहै नाहिं।।१२९५।।
A critic is like a leech without a nose; they are found in dirty places. They do not belong among saints, gurus, or devotees.
तिनका कबहूं न निन्दिये, पांव तले जो होय। कबहूं उड़ि आंखो परै, पीर घनेरी होय।।१२९८।।
Do not criticize even a small straw that is under your feet. It may fly up and fall on your eyes, causing great pain.
कथनी मीठी खांड सी, करनी विष की लोय। कथनी से करनी करै, विष से अमृत होय।।१३०६।।
Words are as sweet as sugar, but actions are like poison. When actions are taken based on words, the poison turns into nectar.
पानी मिलै न आप को, औरन बकसत छीर। आपन मन निहचल नहीं, और बंधावत धीर।।१३१४।।
You do not get water, but others are given milk. Your own mind remains unsettled, while you remain steadfast in holding others.
करनी गर्व निवारनी, मुक्ति स्वारथी सोय। कथनी तजि करनी करै, तब मुक्ताहल होय।।१३१६।।
Actions remove pride, and those seeking liberation should act selflessly. By abandoning mere words and focusing on actions, one achieves liberation.
श्रम ही ते सब कुछ बने, बिन श्रम मिल न काहि। सीधी अंगुली घी जम्मो, कबहूं निकसै नाहिं।।१३१९।।
Everything is achieved through hard work; nothing is obtained without effort. Just as ghee cannot come out of a straight finger, success requires labor.
जैसी मुख ते नीकसे, तैसी चालै नाहिं। मानुष नहीं वे श्वान गति, बांधे जमपुर जांहि।।१३२०।।
One's actions should match their words; otherwise, they are not human but like dogs, bound by the noose of fate.
मारग चलते जो गिरै, ताको नाहिं दोस। कहैं कबीर बैठा रहै, ता सिर करड़े कोस।।१३२८।।
One who falls while walking on the path is not to be blamed. Kabir says, sitting idly and not trying is like a head that takes a hundred blows.
श्रम ही ते सब होत है, जो मन राखे धीर। श्रम ते खोदत कूप ज्यों, थल में प्रगटै नीर।।१३३०।।
Everything is achieved through effort when one remains patient. Just as digging a well brings out water, persistent labor reveals results.
कबीर कमाई आपनी, कबहु न निष्फल जाय। सात समुद्र आड़ा पड़े, मिलै अगाड़ी आय।।१३३८।।
Kabir's own efforts are never in vain. Even if seven seas stand in the way, they will be crossed.
सिदक सबरी बाहिरा, कहा हज्ज को जाय। जिनका दिल साबित नहीं, तिनको कहा खुदाय।।१३५५।।
The outward rituals of Sabari are irrelevant; what use is going on pilgrimage? For those whose hearts are not true, how can they be divine?
पाहन पूजै हरि मिलै, तो मैं पूजूं पहार। ताते तो चक्की भली, पीसि खाय संसार।।१३५८।।
If God could be found by worshipping a stone, then I'd worship a mountain. Better to use a millstone and feed the world.
चिउंटी चावल ले चली, बिच में मिल गयी दाल। कहैं कबीर दो न मिलै, इक ले दूजी डाल।।१३६८।।
An ant carried away a grain of rice, but got a bit of lentil too. Kabir says, if you can't have both, take one and leave the other.
पांच तत्व का पूतरा, रज बीरज की बूंद। एकै घाटी नीसरा, ब्राह्मन क्षत्री सूद।।१३७२।।
This body is made of five elements and a drop of semen and ovum. From the same source emerge Brahmin, Kshatriya, and Shudra.
मरती बिरियां दान दे, जीवन बड़ा कठोर। कहैं कबीर क्यों पाइये, खांड़ा का व चोर।।१३७५।।
At the time of death, people give charity, but life has been harsh. Kabir says, why should we praise a thief with a sword?
नहाये धोये क्या भया, जो मन मैल न जाय। मीन सदा जल में रहै, धोये बास न जाय।।१३७८।।
What is the use of bathing and cleaning if the mind's impurity remains? Even though the fish lives in water, it still smells.
सब बन तो तुलसी भई, परबत सालिगराम। सब नदियां गंगा भई, जाना आतम राम।।१३८०।।
All the forests have become holy like Tulsi, all mountains like Shaligram, and all rivers like the Ganga, when one realizes the divine in the soul.
निर्मल गुरु के ज्ञान सो, निरमल साधु भाय। कोइला होय न ऊजला, सौ मन साबुन लाय।।१३८१।।
The pure knowledge of the guru makes the saint pure. But coal cannot become white, even with a hundred loads of soap.
दाता दाता चलि गये, रहि गये मक्खी चूस। दान मान समुझे नहीं, लड़ने को मजबूत।।१३८७।।
The generous givers have left, leaving behind the miserly who suck even the last drop. They understand neither charity nor honor, but are strong in conflict.
जहां दया वहां धर्म है, जहां लोभ तहं पाप। जहां क्रोध वहां काल है, जहां क्षमा वहां आप।।१३९०।।
Where there is compassion, there is righteousness; where there is greed, there is sin. Where there is anger, there is death; where there is forgiveness, there is God.
दया धर्म का मूल है, पाप मूल संताप। जहां क्षमा तहां धर्म है, जहां दया तहां आप।।१३९५।।
Compassion is the root of righteousness, while sin leads to suffering. Where there is forgiveness, there is virtue; where there is compassion, there is God.
दीन गरीबी दीन को, दंदुर को अभिमान। दुंदुर तो विष से भरा, दीन गरीबी जान।।१३९७।।
Humility belongs to the humble, pride belongs to the arrogant. Arrogance is filled with poison, understand the value of humility.
दीन गरीबी बंदगी, साधुन सो आधीन। ताके संग मैं यौं रहूं, ज्यौं पानी संग मीन।।१३९८।।
Humility and service are the true devotion, and the humble are dependent on the saints. I wish to stay with them just as a fish stays in water.
दीन गरीबी बंदगी, सबसो आदर भाव। कहैं कबीर सोई बड़ा, जामे बड़ा सुभाव।।१४०८।।
Humility, poverty, and service are the highest virtues. Kabir says that the one who embodies these traits is truly great.
अब तो हम कंचन भये, तब हम होते कांच। सतगुरु की किरपा भई, दिल अपने को सांच।।१४१५।।
Now I have become gold, whereas I was once mere glass. By the grace of the True Guru, my heart has become pure and true.
कबीर झूठ न बोलिये, जब लग पार बसाय। न जानों क्या होयगा, पल के चौथे भाय।।१४१८।।
Kabir says, do not speak lies, even if you are established in the world. One never knows what might happen in the blink of an eye.
कबीर लज्जा लोक की, बोलै नाहिं सांच। जानि बूझि कंचन तजै, क्यों तू पकड़े कांच।।१४१९।।
Kabir says, out of social shame, people do not speak the truth. Knowing and understanding the value of gold, why do you cling to mere glass?
सांचे को सांचा मिलै, अधिक बढ़ै सनेह। झूठे को सांचा मिलै, तड़ दे टूटे नेह।।१४२१।।
The truth found in truth increases love; the truth found in falsehood causes love to break.
झूठ बात नहिं बोलिये, जब लग पार बसाय। अहो कबीरा सांच गहु, आवागवन नसाय।।१४२२।।
Do not speak falsehood, even if you are established in the world. Oh Kabir, hold onto the truth, for it does not perish.
गोब्यंदक के गुंण बहुत ह, लिखे जु हिरदै मांहि। डरता पाणी ना पिऊं, मति वै धोंये जांहि।।१४३०।।
The virtues of the Lord are many, written in the heart. The water is not to be feared or avoided; the understanding remains pure.
कबीर सिरजनहार बिन, मेरा हितू न कोइ। गुण औगुण बिहड़ै नहीं, स्वारथ बंधी लोइ।।१४३७।।
Kabir says that without the Creator, there is no one who benefits me. Virtue and vice are not separate; all is bound by self-interest.
आदि मधि अरु अंत लौ, अबिहड़ सदा अभंग। कबीर उस करता की, सेवग तजै न संग।।१४३८।।
In the beginning, middle, and end, the Creator is ever unchanging and eternal. Kabir says, one should not abandon the service of such a consistent Creator.
असून्य तखत आसन अडिग, पिंड झरोखे नूर। जाके दिल में हौ बसे, सेना लिये हुजूर।।१४४३।।
The empty throne is steadfast, with the body as the window of light. He who resides in the heart is accompanied by an army of honor.
आपा तजे हरि भजे, नखसिख तजे विकार। सब जीवन से निबरहे, साधुमता है सार।।१४५२।।
One who renounces their ego and worships Hari, discards all impurities. Such a person lives a life free from all faults; this is the essence of saintliness.
एक एक निरुवारिये, जो निरुवारी जाय। दुई मुख के बोलना, घना तमाचा खाय।।१४६०।।
One must overcome each problem, as every solution leads to another. Speaking with a double-tongue only invites slaps.
ए गणवन्ती बेलरी, तव गुण बरणि न जाय। जड़ काटे सो हरियरी, सींचे ते कम्हलाय।।१४६४।।
O flourishing vine, your qualities cannot be described. If one cuts your roots, you thrive; if watered, you wither.
एक साधे सब साधिया, सब साधे सब जाय। ज्यों जल सींचे मूल को, फूले फले अघाय।।१४६७।।
By mastering one, all is mastered; by trying to master all, everything is lost. Like watering the root of a plant, it flowers and fruits abundantly.
कर बंदगी विवेक की, भेष धरे सब कोय। सो बन्दगी बहि जान दे, जहां शब्द विवेक न होय।।१४७३।।
Worship with wisdom, for everyone can wear a disguise. True devotion fades away where there is no wisdom in words.
कुरु बहियां बल आपनां, छांडु बिरानी आस। जाके आंगन नदिया बहै, सो कस मरत पियास।।१४७४।।
Use your own strength and abandon reliance on others. How can one die of thirst when a river flows through their courtyard?
कहंता तो बहु मिला, गहंता मिला न कोय। सो कहंता बहि जान दे, जो न गहंता होय।।१४७७।।
There are many who preach, but few who truly grasp. Let go of the one who speaks but does not understand.
काजर की ही होठरी, बुड़ा ई संसार। बलिहारी ताहि पुरुष की, पैठि जु निकलनि हार।।१४७९।।
This world is like a room full of soot, and everyone is drowning in it. Praise be to the one who can enter and come out unscathed.
खेत भला बीज भला, बोइल मुठिका फेर। काहे बिरवा रूखरा, ई गुण खेतहिं केर।।१४८८।।
The field is good, the seed is good, yet the plant grows rough. It is the quality of the field that matters.
गही टेग नहिं छोड़ई, चोंच जीभ जरि जाय। ऐसे तप्त अंगार है, ताहि चकोर चबाय।।१४८९।।
The bird does not let go of the iron, even if its beak and tongue burn. Just like that, the partridge eats burning embers.
गुणिया तो गुण ही गहे, निगुर्णयां गुणहि घिनाय। बैलहिं दीजे जायफल, क्या बुझे क्या खाय।।१४९१।।
The virtuous hold onto virtues, while the non-virtuous despise them. Like giving a nutmeg to an ox, how would it understand its value?
गुरु सिकलीगर कीजिए, मनहि मसकला देइ। शब्द छोलना छोलिके, चित्त दर्पण करि लेइ।।१४९५।।
Make the Guru a blacksmith, who polishes the mind. Let him sharpen your words, and turn your heart into a mirror.
चंदन वास निवारहु, मूये सबै निपातिया। जिवत जीव जनि मारेहु, मूये सबै निपातिया।।१५०१।।
The fragrance of sandalwood disappears after death, but do not harm a living being, for all perish after death.
चंदन सर्प लपेटिया, चंदन काह कराया। राम-राम विष भीनिया, अमृत कहां समाय।।१५०२।।
The sandalwood tree is entwined by a snake, rendering its fragrance useless. Even the name of Ram is tainted with poison, how can nectar remain?
जाकी जिह्वा बंद नहिं, हृदय नांही सांच। ताके संग न लागिये, घाले बटिया मांझ।।१५१८।।
One whose tongue never stops and whose heart lacks truth, don't associate with them; they lead you astray.
जाके चलते रौंदे परा, धरती होइ बेहाल। सो सावन्त घर में जरे, पंडित करहु विचार।।१५१९।।
The one whose actions cause the earth to suffer, such a powerful person will burn in his own house; O learned ones, think about this.
जानि बूझि जड़ होय रहो, बल तजि निर्बल होय। कहहिं कबीर तेहि संत के, पला न पकरे कोय।।१५२३।।
Knowingly, one becomes inert, abandoning strength and becoming weak. Kabir says, no one takes care of such a saint.
जीव घात नहि कीजिए, बहुरि लेत वै कान। तीरथ गए न बांचिहु, कोटि हीरा देहु दान।।१५२९।।
Do not harm any living being, for karma will repay. Pilgrimages won't save you, even if you donate millions of diamonds.
जीव जनि मारह बापुरा, सबका एकहि प्राण। हत्या कबहूं न छुटि है, कोटिक सुनउ पुराण।।१५३०।।
Do not kill the innocent, for all share the same life force. Murder is never forgiven, even if you hear a million scriptures.
जो घर रहे सर्प का, ता घर साधु न होय। सकल संपदा ले गया, विषहर लागे सोय।।१५४०।।
A house where a serpent resides cannot be a place of the pious. All its wealth is taken away, and it is infested with poison.
जो जानहु जगजीवना, जो जानह तो जीव। पान पचायेहु आपना, पनिया मागि न पीव।।१५४२।।
One who understands the essence of life, understands the true self. He digests his own food and does not beg for others’ water.
जो तू सांचा बानिया, सांची हाट लगाव। अन्दर झारू देइ के, कूरा दूरि बहाव।।१५४४।।
If you are a true merchant, set up a true market. Clean the inside with a broom, and let the falsehood go away.
ज्यों मुदराद समशान ज्यों, शील सबरूप समान। कहहिं कबीर सावन गती, तबकी देखि झुकाहि।।१५४८।।
Just as the cremation ground is uniform, so is the essence of character. Kabir says, this path (the way of devotion) is to be observed and bowed down to.
ताहि न कहिए परखू, पाहन लखे जो कोय। नर नग या दिल जो लखे, रतन पारखू सोय।।१५५७।।
Do not judge by appearances; the stone reveals only what is within. The wise recognize the value of a person, a city, or a heart.
सकलो दुर्मति दूर करि, अच्छा जनम बनाव। काग गमन बुधि छोड़ दे, हंस गमन चलि आव।।१५६५।।
Remove all bad intentions, make a good life. Abandon the intellect of the crow, and follow the path of the swan.
धरती जानति आप गुण, कधी न होती डोल। तिल तिल गुरुवी होती, रहित ठीकहु के मोल।।१५७०।।
The earth knows its own quality and never shakes. Each grain of sesame is valuable, even without its worth.
प्रगट कहौं तो मारिया, परदा लखे न कोय। सहना छुपा पुवार तर, को कह बैरी होय।।१५९९।।
If revealed, it is killed; no one sees the veil. Endurance hides it, who can say who is the enemy?
बिन डांडै जग डांडिया, सोरठि परिया डांड। बाटनिहारा लोभिया, गुड़े ते मीठी खांड।।१६१३।।
Without a stick, the world is disciplined. The one who travels the path of greed finds sweetness in the stones.
मन गयन्द माने नहीं, चले सरति के साथ। महावत बिचारा क्या करे, जो अंकुश नहिं हाथ।।१६३१।।
The mind does not heed to discipline, it flows along with the current. What can the poor mahavat do, if there is no rein in hand?
लोभे जन्म गमाइया, पापे खाया पुण्य। साधी सो आधीकहै, ता पर मेरा खून।।१६७०।।
Greed gives birth to troubles, sins are consumed and virtues are earned. The one who maintains this balance is my own blood.
शब्द शब्द बहु उंतरे, सार शब्द मथि लीजे। कहहिं कबिर जेहि सार शब्द, नहिं धृग जीवन सो जीजे।।१६७८।।
The words are many, but the essence is in the core word. Kabir says, the one who understands the essence of the word, truly lives a meaningful life.
सज्जन ते दुर्ज्जन भयो, सुनि काहु के बोल। कांसा तांबा होय रहा, हता ठिकों के मोल।।१६८४।।
One becomes virtuous or wicked based on what one hears. Just as brass and copper remain, their value is measured by worth.
सब ते सांचा ही भला, जो दिल सांचा होय। सांच बिना सुख है नहीं, कोटि करे जो कोय।।१६८९।।
The best is that which is true; what is true is in the heart. Without truth, there is no happiness, no matter how many efforts one makes.
सब ही तो लघुता भली, लघुता ते सब होय। ज्यों द्वितीय के चन्द्रमा, नवावै सब कोय।।१६९१।।
All find greatness in humility; through humility, everything is achieved. Just as the second moon does not rise, all must achieve greatness.
सिंह अकेला बन रमे, पलक पलक करे ठौर। जैसे बन है आपना, तैसा बन है और।।१७०१।।
The lion enjoys solitude, finding a place at every step. Just as the forest is yours, so is the forest of others.
सुगना सेमर बेगि तजि, तेरी घने बिगूची पांख। ऐसा सेमर सेइया, जाके हृदय न आंख।।१७०३।।
The beautiful peacock forsakes the Seemar tree quickly; its dense feathers adorn you. Such a peacock is rare, who has the heart but not the eyes.
सोना सज्जन साधुजन, टूटि जुरहिं शत् बार। दुर्जन कुंभ कुम्हार का, एकहि धरे दरार।।१७०५।।
A good, virtuous person is broken and mended a hundred times. A wicked person, like a potter's vessel, breaks with just one crack.
हंस बकु देख एक, रंग चरे हरियरे ताल। हंस क्षीर जानिये, बकु धरेंगे काल।।१७०६।।
The swan looks at the crane, the color of the green lake. Know the swan to be pure, while the crane will eventually meet its end.
हंसा तूं तो सबल था, हलकी तेरी चाल। रंग कुरंगे रंगिया, त किया और लगवार।।१७०७।।
O swan, you were strong, with your light gait. Why, then, is there a disparity in colors and hues?
हंसा मोति बिकनिया, कंचन थार भराय। जो जाको मम न जाने, सो ताको काह कराय।।१७१०।।
The swan sells pearls and fills its golden dish. What can be done for someone who does not recognize its value?
हीरा सोई सराहिये, सहे जो धन का चोट। कपट कुरंगी मानवा, परखत निकला खोट।।१७१८।।
The diamond is praised for enduring the blow of wealth. The deceitful human, when examined, reveals flaws.
सीतलता के कारणै, नाग बिलंबे आइ। रोम रोम विष भरि रह्मा, अमृत कहा समाइ।।१७२७।।
Due to coolness, the snake delays coming. The body is filled with poison, where is the nectar?
ऊंचा कुल के कारणै, बंस बध्या अधिकार। चंदन बास भेदै नहीं, जाल्या सब परिवार।।१७३०।।
Due to high lineage, the family holds power. The sandalwood's fragrance does not fade, even if the whole family is burnt.
कबीर बहुत जतन करि कीजिये, सब फल जाय नसाय। कबीर संचै सूम धन, अन्त चोर लै जाय।।१७३२।।
Kabir says, despite much effort, all the fruits may be lost. Kabir advises to accumulate true wealth, for in the end, the thief takes it all.
चोट सतांणी बिरह की, सब तन जरजर होइ। मारणहारा जांणिहै, कै जिहिं लागी सोइ।।१७४९।।
The wounds of separation cause enduring pain, making the whole body frail. Only the one who inflicts this pain understands its true nature.
जिहि सरि मारी काल्हि, सो सर मेरे मन बस्या। तिहि सरि अजहूं मारि, सर बिन सच पाऊं नहीं।।१७५२।।
The river which I crossed yesterday, has settled in my mind. Even today, I am crossing the river, and without the river, I cannot find the truth.
बिरह भुंवगम पैसि करि, किया कलेजै घाव। साधू अंग न मोड़ही, ज्यूं भावै त्यूं खाव।।१७५४।।
The sting of separation creates wounds in the heart. A true saint does not bend or break, they accept whatever comes their way.
हांसी खेलौं हरि मिलै, तौ कौण सहै षरसान। काम क्रोध त्रिष्णां तजै, ताहि मिलैं भगवान।।१७६५।।
If one can attain Hari through laughter and play, who would bear the burden of the battlefield? One must renounce lust, anger, and desire to meet the Lord.
कौतिग दीठा देह बिन, रवि ससि बिना उजास। साहिब सेवा मांहि है, बेपरवाही दास।।१७८२।।
The grandeur of the body without the light of the sun and moon is like a body without radiance. The true service is in the devotion to the Master, which the careless servant understands.
सरति समांणों निरति मैं, निरति रही निरधार। सुरति निरति परचा भया, तब खूले स्वयं दुबार।।१८०१।।
As the river flows continuously, it remains steadfast and unwavering. When the divine essence is realized, the doors to self-revelation open.
सचु पाया सुख ऊपनां, अरु दिल दरिया पूरि। सकल पाप सहजैं गये, जब सांई मिल्या हजूरि।।१८०५।।
True happiness is attained through divine realization, and the heart becomes a full ocean. All sins dissolve effortlessly when one meets the Lord.
कबीर दिल स्याबति भया, पाया फल संभ्रथ्थ। सायर मांहि ढंढोलतां, हीरै पड़ि गया हथ्थ।।१८१३।।
Kabir’s heart became pure, and he received the fruit of spiritual wealth. Searching in the treasure chest, he found the gem in his own hand.
जा कारणि मैं ढूंढ़ता, सनमुख मिलिया आइ। धन मैली पिव उजला, लागि न सकौं पाइ।।१८१५।।
For the reason that I searched, I came face to face with the truth. The wealth is tarnished, but the true essence remains pure, and cannot be grasped by material means.
अंमृत बरिसै हीरा निपजै, घंटा पड टकसाल। कबीर जलाहा भया पारषू, अनभै उतरया पार।।१८२६।।
Nectar rains down and diamonds are forged, the bell rings in the mint. Kabir became a torchbearer, transcending the mundane.
कबीर प्रीतड़ी तौ तुझ सौं, बहु गुणियाले कंत। जे हंसि बोलौं और सौं, तौं नील रंगाऊ दंत।।१८२८।।
Kabir, the lover of the beloved, adores the many qualities of the beloved. If I smile and speak with you, I’ll turn my teeth blue.
जब लग भगति सकामता, तब लग निष्फल सेव। कहै कबीर वै क्यूं मिलै, निहकामी निज देव।।१८३७।।
As long as devotion is driven by desire, service remains fruitless. Kabir says, why would such a person find the true deity?
कबीर भूलि बिगाड़िया, तूं नां करि मैला चित। साहिब गरवा लोड़िये, नफर बिगाड़ैं नित।।१८५७।।
Kabir says, don't ruin your mind with mistakes and keep it pure. Seek the Lord's protection, as people constantly cause harm.

Half-hearted attempts and weak efforts won't lead to success. Without deep conviction, even constant efforts are in vain.

Kabir, why do you fear when the Lord’s hand is over you? Do not be shaken like an elephant mounted on its path by barking dogs.
मन फाटा वाइक बुरै, मिटी सगाई साक। जौ परि दूध तिवास का, ऊकटि हूवा आक।।१८८८।।
An evil-torn mind destroys all relationships and connections. Just as a drop of poison spoils an entire pot of milk.
चंदन भांगा गुण करै, जैसे चोली पंन। बोइ जनां भागां न मिलै, मुकताहल अरु मंन।।१८८९।।
Even when broken, sandalwood retains its fragrance, like a torn garment still providing some cover. Those who sow bad deeds will not reap good fortune, liberation, or peace of mind.
दावै दाझण होत है, निरदावै निरसंक। जे नर निरदावै रहैं, ते गिणैं इंद्र को रंक।।१८९५।।
Those who are attached to desires suffer, while those without desires remain fearless. Even Indra, the king of gods, seems like a pauper compared to one who is detached.
कबीर साई सूरिवां, मन सूं मांडे झूझ। पंच पयादा पाड़ि ले, दूरि करै सब दूज।।१९०९।।
Kabir says, one who is devoted to the Lord, fights with the mind. Removing the five enemies, one can be free from all others.
सूरा तबही कै परषिये, लडै दीन कै हेत। पुरिजा पुरिजा ह्व पड़ै, तऊ न छांडै खेत।।१९१४।।
The hero fights for the sake of the poor, but when the field becomes barren, he does not abandon it.
खेत न छाडै सूरिवां, झझै द्वै दल मांहि। आसा जीवन मरण की, मन मैं आंणै नाहि।।१९१५।।
The true hero does not abandon the field, even when it is divided into two parts. There is no hope in the mind about life and death.
अब तौ झूझयां ही वणौं, मूढ़ि चाल्यां घर दूरि। सिर साहिब कौं सौंपता, सोच न कीजै सूरि।।१९१६।।
Now I have fought enough, my foolish actions have taken me far from home. I have surrendered my head to the Lord, do not worry, O hero.
कायर बहुत पमांवहीं, बहकि न बोलैं सूर। काम पड्यांं ही जांणिहै, किसके मुख परि नूर।।१९१९।।
The coward is very pompous but does not speak the truth. When the need arises, it becomes clear whose face shines with grace.
मैंमंता तिण नां चरै, सालै चिता सनेह। एक बारि जु बांध्या प्रेम कै, डारि रह्या सिरि षेह।।१९५३।।
The attachment to worldly things is like a burning pyre. Once bound by love, one remains steadfast in it, as if their head is tied with it.
तरवर तास बिलांबिए, बारह मास फलंत। सीतल छाया गहर फल, पंषी केलि करंत।।१९६२।।
The tree takes its time, and bears fruit for twelve months. The cool shade remains, while the birds continue their play.
दाता तरवर दया फल, उपगारी जीवंत। पंषा चले दिसावरां, विरषा सुफल फलंत।।१९६३।।
The tree of the giver bears fruit of compassion, which is beneficial to the living. The birds go to different directions, and the rain produces fruitful results.
ऐसा कोई न मिले, हम कौं लेइ पिछानि। अपना करि किरपा करे, ले उतारे मैदानि।।१९६५।।
No one is found to lift us up and rescue us. Only by showing mercy to ourselves, we can be saved from the field of strife.
पाइ पदारथ पेलि करि, कंकर लीया हाथि। जोड़ी बिछुटी हंस की, पड्या बंगा कै साथि।।१९७५।।
Having obtained the treasure, I took a pebble in my hand. The pair of separated swans found it and rested by the riverbank.
जिहं घरि साध न पूजिये, हरि की सेवा नांहि। ते घर मुड़हट सारषे, भूत बसै तिन मांहि।।१९८२।।
Where saints are not honored, and service to Hari is not performed, that house is of no worth, inhabited by ghosts.
है गै गैंवर सघन घन, छत्र धजा फहराइ। ता सुख थैं भिष्या भली, हरि सुमिरत दिन जाइ।।१९८३।।
The dark cloud of thick rain, with the flag fluttering. The comfort of that is better than the heat; by remembering Hari, the day passes peacefully.
क्यूं नृप नारी नींदये, क्यूं पनिहारी कौं मान। व मांग संवारै पीव कौं, वा नित उठि सुमिरै राम।।१९८४।।
Why do the king and queen sleep, and why is the water carrier honored? One who adorns the bride and always remembers Ram, is truly honored.
कबीर धनि ते सुंदरी, जिन जाया बैसनौं पूत। राम सुमरि नरिभै हुवा, सब जग गया अऊत।।१९८५।।
Kabir says, the rich and beautiful woman, who has sons and wealth, has attained true greatness by remembering Ram. All the world is in awe of her.
कबीर कुल तौं सो भला, जिहि कुल उपजै दास। जिहि कुल दास न ऊपजै, सो कुल आक पलास।।१९८६।।
Kabir says, a family is truly good if it gives rise to servants of God. A family that does not produce such servants is like a barren tree.
साषत बांभण मति मिलै, बैसनौं मिलै चंडाल। अंकमाल दे भेटिये, मांनों मिले गोपाल।।१९८७।।
Wisdom is found with the Brahmins, and the lower castes are met with outcasts. When we meet the divine, it is like meeting Gopal (Krishna).
निरबैरी निहकांमता, सांई सेती नेह। विषिया सूं न्यारा रहै, संतहि का अंग एह।।१९८९।।
Harmlessness and humility are the essence of love with the divine. Being detached from worldly pleasures, this is the true mark of a saint.
संत न छाडै संतई, जे कोटिक मिलैं असंत। चंदन भुवंगा बैठिया, तउ सीतलता न तजंत।।१९९०।।
A saint does not abandon his saintliness even if millions of ungodly people come. Just as sandalwood does not lose its coolness while burning, a true saint does not lose his essence.
काम मिलावे राम कूं, जे कोइ जांणे राषि। कबीर बिचारा क्या करे, जाकी सुखदेव बोले साषि।।१९९८।।
One who understands the essence of work achieves Ram. What can the poor Kabir do, whom even Sukdev has praised?
स्वारथ को सबको सगा, सब सगलाही जांणि। बिन स्वारथ आदर करै, सो हरि की प्रीति पिछांणि।।२००२।।
Self-interest is dear to everyone, and everyone knows this. The one who respects without self-interest is known to have true love for Hari.
कबीर संगति साध की, कदे न निष्फल होइ। चंदन होसी बांवना, नीव न कहसी कोइ।।२००८।।
The company of the virtuous is never fruitless. Even sandalwood, if applied, will not diminish its fragrance.

Kabir considers that day to be good when he meets a saint. By meeting such a person, the account of sins is filled and the sinful body is purified.
कबीर खाई कोट की, पाणी पीवे न कोइ। आई मिलै जब गंग मैं, तब सब गंगोदिक होइ।।२०१५।।
Kabir speaks of eating hundreds of pots but finding no one to drink the water. When one meets the Ganga, all becomes sanctified.
केती लहरि समंद की, कत उपजै कत जाइ। बलिहारी ता दास की, उलटी मांहि समाइ।।२०१८।।
How many waves arise and fade in the ocean? I am devoted to that servant who immerses himself even in adverse conditions.
भगति हजारी कपड़ा, तामें मल न समाइ। साषित काली कांवली, भावैं तहां बिछाइ।।२०२०।।
The cloth of devotion is priceless and cannot be tainted. The black kanti (necklace) is revered and adorned.
जेती देखौं आत्मा, तेता सालिगराम। साधू प्रत्यक्ष देह हैं, नहीं पाथर सू कांम।।२०२५।।
The soul that I see is the same as the Saligram. The saint's visible form is more significant than the stone.
आगे-आगे दौ जलै, पीछे हरिया होइ। बलिहारी ता बिरष की, जड़ काट्यां फल होइ।।२०३२।।
Ahead, it burns, while behind it is green. Blessed is the tree which, when its root is cut, still bears fruit.
नर नारी सब नरक है, जब लग देह सकाम। कहै कबीर ते राम के, जे सुमिरै निहकाम।।२०४३।।
Both men and women are in hell as long as they desire bodily pleasures. Kabir says that those who remember Ram with selflessness are free from this hell.
नारि पराई आपणीं, भुगत्या नरकहि जाइ। आगि आगि सब एक है, तामैं हाथ न बाहि।।२०५८।।
Seeing another's wife as one's own leads to hell. Fire is fire, whether near or far, don't put your hand in it.
कबिरा सोई शूरमां, जाके पांचूं हाथ। जाके पांचूं वश नहीं, तो हरि संग न साथ।।२०८१।।
Kabir says, true warriors are those who have control over all five senses. Those who don't have control are not close to God.
गगन दमामा बाजिया, हनहनिया के कान। शूरां घिरां बधावना, कायर तजिहैं प्रान।।२०८२।।
The war drums sound in the sky, alarming the ears. Brave ones rejoice in the call to battle, while cowards flee and lose their lives.
घायल की गति और है, औरन की गति और। लागा बान जो प्रेम का, रहा कबीरा ठौर।।२०८३।।
The condition of the wounded is different, different is the condition of others. Kabir remains steady, struck by the arrow of love.
ढोल दमामा गडगडी, सहनाई औ तूर। तीनौ निकसि न बाहुरै, साधु सती और शूर।।२०८८।।
The drums, trumpets, and flutes sound aloud. Three types of people never return once they leave: the saint, the virtuous, and the brave.
साधु सती और शूरमां, ज्ञानी औ गजदंत। ऐते निकसि न बाहुरैं, जो युग जाहिं अनंत।।२०८९।।
Saints, virtuous ones, warriors, the wise, and elephants with tusks. Once they leave, they never return, even across endless ages.
साधु सती और शूरमा, कबहुं न फेरें पीठ। तीनों निकसि जो बाहुरै, ताको मुंह मति दीठ।।२०९०।।
Saints, virtuous ones, and warriors never turn their backs. If any of these return after leaving, don't ever trust them again.
साधु सती और शूरमां, दई न मारै मूंह। ये तीनों भागा बुरा, साहबजी की सूंह।।२०९१।।
Saints, virtuous ones, and warriors never strike with their mouths. These three are detrimental to the essence of the Lord.
साधु सती औ शूरमां, इन पटतर कोई नाहिं। अगम पंथ को पग धरै, डिगै तो कहां समाहि।।२०९२।।
Saints, virtuous ones, and warriors are incomparable. They walk the path of the unknown, and if they falter, where would they go?
साधु सती औ सिंह को, ज्यों लंघन त्यों शोभ। सिंह न मारै मींडका, साधु न बांधे लोभ।।२०९४।।
Saints, virtuous ones, and lions shine as they cross boundaries. A lion does not harm a mosquito, and a saint is not swayed by greed.
साधु सती और शूरमां, इनकी बात अगाध। आशा छोडे देहकी, तिनमें अधिका साध।।२०९५।।
The words of saints, virtuous ones, and warriors are profound. Those who renounce bodily desires find greater fulfillment in them.
भाव भलका सुरति शर, धर धीरज करतान। मनकी मूठी जहां लगि, चोट तहांहीं जान।।२०९६।।
The essence of virtue is like a sharp arrow; it requires patience to bear. Wherever the mind's grasp is applied, the injury is felt there.
शीतलता संजोगलै, शूर चढ़ा संग्राम। अबकै भाजन परत है, शिर साहब के काम।।२०९९।।
Coolness comes with timing, and the warrior engages in battle. Now the vessel is being prepared for the work of the Lord.
धर सों शीश उतारिके, डारि देह ज्यों ढेल। कोई शूर को सोहसी, घर जाने का खेल।।२१००।।
By placing the head on the ground and discarding the body like a stone, One who is brave and honorable, for them returning home is a game.
दाता के तो धन घना, शूरा के शिर बीस। पतिबरता के तन सही, पत राखै जगदीस।।२१०२।।
The donor has great wealth, the brave have twenty heads. The devoted wife’s body is proper, she protects her husband.
शूरा सन्मुख बाहता, कोई न बांधे धीर। पर दल मोरन रन अटल, ऐसा दास कबीर।।२१०६।।
A brave man remains unmoved before his enemy, and no one can bind his courage. But in the battlefield of life, Kabir says, such steadfastness is rare.
शूर सनाह न पहरई, मरता नहीं डराय। कायर भाजै पीठि दै, शूर मुंडीमुंह खाय।।२१०७।।
A brave person does not wear armor, nor does he fear death. The coward turns his back and runs; the brave face challenges head-on.

A sword is meant for one who wields it in battle. What use is a sword to a coward, who merely gnashes his teeth.
तीर तुपक बरछी बहैं, बिगसि जायगा चाम। शूरा के मैदान में, कायर का क्या काम।।२१११।।
Arrows, guns, and spears may be used, but they will only bring death. In the battlefield of the brave, what use is a coward.
शूरा के मैदान में, कायर का क्या काम। शूरा से शूरा मिलै, तब पूरा संग्राम।।२११२।।
In the battlefield of the brave, what use is a coward? Only when brave meet brave does the true battle occur.

शूरा चला संग्राम को, कबहुं न देई पीठ। आगा चलि पीछा चलै, ताको मुंह मति दीठ।।२११५।।
The brave advance in battle, never turning their back. If one moves forward and backward, it is visible on their face.
शूरा लरै कमन्द ह्वै, धरसों शीहा उतारि। कहै कबीरा मारा मुआ, कहै जो मारहिं मारि।।२११६।।
The brave fight with courage, discarding all fear. Kabir says, whether one is killed or kills, it's the same for those who fight.
बिन पाऊं का पंथ है, मंझि शहर अस्थान। बिकट बाट औघट घनां, पहुंच सन्त सुजान।।२११८।।
Without feet, the path is difficult, whether in a city or a remote place. In treacherous paths and dense forests, only a wise saint can reach.
पंच असमाना जब लिया, तब रन धसिया शूर। दिल सौंपा शिर उॅबरा, मुजरा राम हजूर।।२११९।।
When the five elements are mastered, the battlefield becomes a place for the brave. One offers their heart and head, and the divine Ram is pleased.
रन धसिया ते उॅबरा, आया गरह निंवास। घरूं बधावा बाजिया, औ जोवन की आस।।२१२०।।
The brave rise from the battlefield and return to their home. Celebrations at home and the hope of life continue.
जब लग धर पर सीस है, शूर कहावै कोय। माथा टूटै धर लरै, कमद कहावै सोय।।२१२१।।
As long as the head is on the ground, one is called a hero. When the head is broken while fighting, only then is one called a true warrior.
शूरन सेंरी ताकई, नेजा घालै घाव। सब दल पाछा मोड़ि के, माड़ी सेतो चाव।।२१२२।।
The brave observe the battlefield and bear the wounds. They turn the entire army around, showing courage and resolve.
शूरा तौं सांच मतै, सहै जो सन्तुख धार। कायर अनी चुभाय के, पीछै झखै अपार।।२१२३।।
The brave accept the truth, bearing the burden of joy. Cowards who cause pain, are endlessly tormented from behind.
भाजि कहांलौं जाइये, भय भारी घर दूर। बहुरि कबीरा खेतरह, दल आया भरपूर।।२१२४।।
Wherever one flees, fear remains and the home is far away. Kabir says, return to the battlefield, the army has come fully prepared.
इक मरिवो इक मारिवो, येही विषमा सिद्धि। ता वे कायर मरैंगे, जो चाले तरकस बिद्धि।।२१२५।।
One who dies is praised, and one who kills is also praised; this is the way of the world. Those who are cowards will die, while those who are skilled with weapons will live.
रन रोही अतिही हुआ, साजन मिला हुजूरि। शूरा शूरा ठाहरा, भाजिगई भक भूमि।।२१२६।।
The battlefield has become intense, and the beloved has met the lord. The brave stand firm, while the coward flees the earth.
शरा थोराही भला, सतका रोपै पग्ग। घना मिला कहि काम का, सावन का सा बग्ग।।२१२७।।
A small blade is useful, and a footpath that leads well. A lot is gained from work, like the monsoon brings rain.
शूरा नाम धराय के, अब क्यों डरपै बीर। मंडि रहिना मैदान में, सन्मुख सहना तीर।।२१३२।।
The brave are called by name, so why should a hero fear? To remain in the field and endure arrows is the true test.
तीर तुबक सों जो लड, सो तो शूरा नाहिं। शूरा सोइ सराहिये, बांटि बांटि धन खाहिं।।२१३३।।
One who fights with arrows and guns is not truly brave. The true brave are those who are praised, sharing their wealth.
तीर तुबक सों जो लडै, सो तो शूर न होय। माया तजि हरि को भजै, शूर कहावै सोय।।२१३४।।
One who fights with arrows and guns is not truly brave. One who renounces illusion and worships the lord is truly brave.
शूरा सोइ सराहिये, अंग न पहरे लोह। जूझै सब बंद खोलि कै, छांडे तनको मोह।।२१३५।।
One should praise the true brave, who do not need armor. They open all their barriers and shed their attachment to the body.
कठिन कमान कबीर की, पड़ी रहै मैदान। केता योद्धा पचि गया, खैंचे संत सुजान।२१३७।।
The bow of Kabir is tough, remaining on the field. Many warriors have perished, while the wise and learned continue to persevere.
राम झरोखै बठिके, सबका मुजरा लेय। जैसी जाको चाकरी, तैसी सबको देय।।२१४२।।
Sitting at the window of Ram, receiving all greetings. Each is given according to their service to him.
चोपड़ मांडी चौहटे, अरध उरध बाजार। कबिरा खेलै रामसों, कबंहु न आवै हार।।२१४३।।
The game is played on a board with four squares, and half the market. Kabir plays with Ram, never facing defeat.
चंदन गया विदेसड, सब कोई कहै पलास। ज्यों ज्यों चूल्हे झांकिया, त्यों त्यों अधिकी बास।।२१५१।।
Sandalwood went abroad, and everyone called it a Palash. The more it is seen in the kitchen, the more it emits fragrance.
राम रतन धन पाइकै, गांठ बांधि ना खोल। नहीं पटन नहिं पारखी, नहिं ग्राहक नहिं मोल।।२१६६।।
The jewel of Ram’s name is obtained, but the knot is not undone. There are no experts, no buyers, no value.
राम रतन धन मुक्ति में, खान खुली घट माहिं। सेतमेतही देतहों, ग्रोहक कोई नाहिं।।२१६७।।
The jewel of Ram’s name is in liberation, the treasure is open within the vessel. It is given with conditions, but there is no buyer.
सागर में मानिक बसै, चीन्हत नाहीं कोय। या मानिक कों सो लखे, जाको गुरुगम होय।।२१७३।।
The jewel resides in the ocean, but no one recognizes it. Only those with true understanding can recognize the jewel.
कबिरा भूलि बिगारिया, तू ना कर मैला चित्त। साहब गरुवा चाहिये, नफर बिगारो नित्त।।२१८७।।
Kabir has made a mistake and ruined himself; do not make your heart dirty. O Lord, what is needed is humility, not continuous defilement.
औगुन मेरा बापजी, बखशो गरीब निवाज। जो मैं पूत कपूत हों, तोहि पिता कों लाज।।२१९०।।
My faults are my inheritance, O merciful one, forgive me. If I am a wayward son, then you, as my father, will be shamed.
नगर चन तब जानिये, जब एकै राजा होय। याहि दुराजी राज में, सुखी न देखा कोय।।२२१४।।
A city can only be known when there is one king. In a land with multiple rulers, no one has ever seen true happiness.
निरन्तर बासी निरमला, शून स्थूल सो निनार। पूरब गंगा पश्चिम बहावै, पेखे बहु उजियार।।२२२०।।
The constant, pure essence is beyond form, like the river Ganga flowing from east to west, bringing immense light.
हदिया सेतो हद रहो, बेहदिया बेहद। जो जैसा तहा रोगिया, तहा तैसी औषद।।२२२९।।
The limited person remains within limits, while the infinite person remains infinite. Just as the medicine is suited to the disease, so is the spiritual solution to the condition.
मांस अहारी मानवा, प्रत्यक्ष राक्षस जानि। ताकी संगति मति करै, होइ भक्ति में हानि।।२२३६।।
A person who consumes meat is known to be a visible demon. Associating with such a person harms one's devotion.
मांस खाये ते ढेड़ सब, मद पीवै सा नीच। कुल की दुरमति पर हरै, राम कहै सो ऊंच।।२२३७।।
Those who consume meat are degraded, and those who drink alcohol are lowly. They destroy the moral values of their lineage; Ram says they are the lowest.
मांस मांस सब एक है, मुरगी हिरनी गाय। आंखि देखि नर खात है, ते नर नरकहिं जाय।।२२४१।।
Meat is meat, whether it is chicken, deer, or cow. When humans consume it, they will go to hell.
यह कूकर को भक्ष है, मनुष्य देह क्यों खाय। मुख में आमिख मेलिके, नरक परते जाय।।२२४२।।
This is the food for dogs, why should it be eaten by humans? With such impurities in the mouth, one will end up in hell.
विष्ठा का चौका दिया, हांडी सीझै हाड। छूति बचवै चास की, तिनहूं का गुरु राड।।२२४७।।
They cook in a place filled with excrement, and bones boil in the pot. The residue of buttermilk remains untainted, even such people have a guru who is a rogue.
जीव हनै हिंसा करै, प्रगट पाप सिर होय। पाप सबै जो देखिया, पुन्य न देखा कोय।।२२४८।।
Killing living beings and committing violence are obvious sins. When I looked around, I saw only sins, and no one engaged in virtuous deeds.
जीव हनै हिंसा करै, प्रगट पाप सिर होय। निगम पुनि ऐसे पाप तें, भिस्त गया नहिं कोय।।२२४९।।

The goat eats leaves, yet its skin is stripped off. What fate awaits those who eat the goat itself?
मुरगी मुल्ला सों कहै, जबह करत है मोहिं। साहब लेखा मांगसी, संकट परिहै तोहिं।।२२५९।।
The hen says to the Mulla, 'You slaughter me, But when God asks for your account, you will be in trouble.'
जोरी करि जबह करै, मुखसों कहै हलाल। साहब लेखा मांगसी, तब होसी कौन हवाल।।२२६३।।
They commit slaughter by force, claiming it is permissible. When God asks for an account, what will be their state?
जोर कीयां जुलूम है, मागै ज्वाब खदाय। खलिक दर खूनी खड़ा, मार मुही मुंह खाय।।२२६४।।
Oppression by force is cruelty, for which God will demand an answer. The creator stands before the murderer, and their actions will devour them.
कबीर गुर बसै बनारसी, सिष समंदां तीर। बिसारया नहीं बीसरै, जै गुंण होई सरीर।।२२६७।।
Kabir says, 'The guru resides in Varanasi, and the disciple by the ocean's shore. The virtues of the guru never fade from the disciple's body.'
जो है जाका भावता, जदि तदि मिलसी आइ। जाकौं तन मन सौंपिया, सो कबहूं छाड़ी न जाइ।।२२६८।।
Whatever one desires, it will come to them. Whoever you dedicate your body and mind to, they will never leave you.
