जब लगि भगति सकाम है, तब लग निष्फल सेव। कहै कबीर, वह क्यों मिले, निष्कामी तजि देव।।५१।।
As long as devotion is selfish, the service is fruitless. Kabir says, why should that devotee be honored who leaves selfless devotion?
साधु गाँठ न बाँधई, उदर समाता लेय। आगे-पीछे हरि खड़े, जब माँगे तब देय।।६९।।
The saint does not bind himself; he accepts what comes. When he has experienced everything, only then does he receive.
जो तू चाहे मुक्ति को, छोड़ दे सब आस। मुक्त ही जैसा हो रहे, सब कुछ तेरे पास।।७८।।
If you seek liberation, give up all attachments. The state of liberation will come to you as it is, with nothing left behind.
खेत न छोड़े सूरमा, जूझे दो दल माहि। आशा-जीवन मरण की, मन में राखे नाहि।।८०।।
A brave person does not abandon the field, even if two armies fight. Hope in life and death should remain in the mind.
हरि संगत शीतल भया, मिटी मोह की ताप। निशि-बासर सुख निधि लही, प्रगट भया हरि आप।।८९।।
Being in the company of the Divine brings tranquility, and the heat of worldly attachment fades away. The treasure of eternal joy is attained by seeking the Divine.
आशा को ईंधन करो, मनसा करौ बभूत। जोगी फेरी यों फिरो, तब वन आवै सूत।।९०।।
Fuel your hopes, and make intentions as ashes. If you practice yoga with such detachment, then even the forest will become your home.
आवत गारी एक है, उलटन होय अनेक। कहै कबीर न उलटिए, वही एक की एक।।९४।।
An insult may come in one form, but its effects are numerous. Kabir says, do not get distressed; it is all the same.
कहे कबीर देय तू, जब तक तेरी देह। देह खेह हो जाएगी, कौन कहेगा देह।।११२।।
Kabir says, give away all you can while your body is still here. When the body is gone, who will speak of it?
चन्दन जैसा साधु है, सर्पहि सम संसार। वाके अग्ङ लपटा रहे, मन मे नाहिं विकार।।११९।।
The saint is like sandalwood, and the world is like a serpent. The saint remains wrapped in the divine, without any inner flaws.
ज्ञान रतन का जतनकर, माटी का संसार। आय कबीर फिर गया, फीका है संसार।।१४५।।
Protect the jewel of wisdom, as the world is made of dust. Kabir says, once you come and go, the world seems pale.
ॠद्धि सिद्धि माँगो नहीं, माँगो तुम पै येह। निसि दिन दरशन शाधु को, प्रभु कबीर कहुँ देह।।१४६।।
Do not ask for wealth and powers, ask for this instead: To see the saints day and night, O Lord, says Kabir.
बुगली नीर बिटालिया, सायर चढ़या कलंक। और पखेरू पी गये, हंस न बौवे चंच।।१७६।।
The frog's water has evaporated, the lark is covered with stains. The other birds have drunk, but the swan remains unruffled.
खूब खांड है खीचड़ी, माहि ष्डयाँ टुक कून। देख पराई चूपड़ी, जी ललचावे कौन।।१८६।।
The sweet pudding is abundant, yet within it are six grains. Seeing another's meal makes one greedy.
तीरथ तो सब बेलड़ी, सब जग मेल्या छाय। कबीर मूल निकंदिया, कौण हलाहल खाय।।१८८।।
All pilgrimages are just a sham, the entire world is shadowed. Kabir says the essence is elusive, who can consume the poison?
गाँठी दाम न बांधई, नहिं नारी सों नेह। कह कबीर ता साध की, हम चरनन की खेह।।२२५।।
He doesn't tie money in a knot, nor does he attach himself to women. Kabir says, I am the dust of such a saint's feet.
सीतलता तब जाणियें, समिता रहै समाइ। पष छाँड़ै निरपष रहै, सबद न देष्या जाइ।।२४७।।
One should recognize coolness when tranquility is maintained. Without the touch of warmth, the words will not reach you.
मनहिं दिया निज सब दिया, मन से संग शरीर। अब देवे को क्या रहा, यों कयि कहहिं कबीर।।२६९।।
One who gives away his mind has given everything, including his body. What remains to give? This is what Kabir says.
सद्गुरु ऐसा कीजिये, लोभ मोह भ्रम नाहिं। दरिया सो न्यारा रहे, दीसे दरिया माहि।।२८२।।
Find a true Guru who is free from greed, attachment, and delusion. Such a Guru is like a river that remains distinct yet appears within the ocean.
गुरु मिला तब जानिये, मिटै मोह तन ताप। हरष शोष व्यापे नहीं, तब गुरु आपे आप।।२८८।।
Know that you have found the true Guru when all delusions and bodily afflictions are dispelled. Then joy and sorrow no longer affect you, and the Guru is truly realized.
टेक न कीजै बावरे, टेक माहि है हानि। टेक छाड़ि मानिक मिलै, सत गुरु वचन प्रमानि।।३०७।।
Do not be stubborn, O fool, as stubbornness leads to loss. Abandon it, and you will find gems; this is the true Guru’s teaching.
कबीर दर्शन साधु के, खाली हाथ न जाय। यही सीख बुध लीजिए, कहै कबीर बुझाय।।३१८।।
Do not visit a saint with empty hands. Kabir says, learn this lesson, that visiting a saint should involve giving something.
साधु बड़े परमारथी, शीतल जिनके अंग। तपन बुझावै ओर की, देदे अपनो रंग।।३२०।।
Saints are great benefactors, whose bodies are cool and calm. They extinguish the heat of worldly desires and give their own hue.
आवत साधु न हरखिया, जात न दीया रोय। कहै कबीर वा दास की, मुक्ति कहाँ से होय।।३२१।।
When a saint arrives, there is no joy or sorrow. Kabir says, where will liberation come for the servant who is indifferent?
सरवर तरवर सन्त जन, चौथा बरसे मेह। परमारथ के कारने, चारों धारी देह।।३२३।।
The saints are like the lake and trees, where rain falls in abundance. For the sake of benevolence, they sustain the four aspects of the body.
साधुन की झुपड़ी भली, न साकट के गाँव। चंदन की कुटकी भली, ना बूबल बनराव।।३२४।।
A saint's humble abode is better than a village of misers. A small piece of sandalwood is better than a heap of brambles.
साधु ऐसा चाहिए, दुखै दुखावै नाहिं। पान फूल छेड़े नहीं, बसै बगीचा माहिं।।३३२।।
A saint should be such that he does not cause pain to others. He does not disturb flowers and fruits, but resides in the garden.
सदा रहे सन्तोष में, धरम आप दृढ़ धार। आश एक गुरुदेव की, और चित्त विचार।।३३९।।
Always remain in contentment, with steadfast adherence to righteousness. Hope lies in the guru, and the mind should be focused on contemplation.
निबैंरी निहकामता, स्वामी सेती नेह। विषया सो न्यारा रहे, साधुन का मत येह।।३४२।।
Renunciation and selflessness, affection towards the Lord. Worldly desires remain separate, this is the belief of the saint.
जुवा चोरी मुखबिरी, ब्याज बिरानी नारि। जो चाहै दीदार को, इतनी वस्तु निवारि।।३४७।।
Gambling, theft, informers, interest, and disdainful women. Those who seek true vision should avoid these things.
कबीर मेरा कोइ नहीं, हम काहू के नाहिं। पारै पहुँची नाव ज्यों, मिलि कै बिछुरी जाहिं।।३४८।।
Kabir says, I have no one, I belong to no one. Just as a boat reaches the other shore, people meet and then part ways.
मान नहीं अपमान नहीं, ऐसे शीतल सन्त। भव सागर से पार हैं, तोरे जम के दन्त।।३५२।।
A saint who is neither honored nor dishonored is truly calm. Such a saint has crossed the ocean of worldly existence and is unaffected by the teeth of time.
सन्त मता गजराज का, चालै बन्धन छोड़। जग कुत्ता पीछे फिरैं, सुनै न वाको सोर।।३५६।।
A saint's behavior is like that of an elephant, who walks free from bonds. The world’s dogs may follow, but they do not heed the noise.
सन्त होत हैं हेत के, हेतु तहाँ चलि जाय। कहैं कबीर के हेत बिन, गरज कहाँ पतियाय।।३५८।।
Saints act according to their purpose, and once their purpose is served, they move on. Kabir says, without purpose, who will believe in the need?
हेत बिना आवै नहीं, हेत तहाँ चलि जाय। कबीर जल और सन्तजन, नवैं तहाँ ठहराय।।३५९।।
Without purpose, nothing comes; with purpose, everything happens. Kabir says that just as water and saints do not stay in one place, they move on.
शब्द विचारे पथ चलै, ज्ञान गली दे पाँव। क्या रमता क्या बैठता, क्या गृह कंदला छाँव।।३६५।।
One who ponders over words walks the path of knowledge, but whether they wander or sit, whether they are in the home or under a canopy, is inconsequential.
गिरही सुवै साधु को, भाव भक्ति आनन्द। कहैं कबीर बैरागी को, निरबानी निरदुन्द।।३६६।।
The householder finds joy and devotion with a saint. Kabir says that a renunciant (ascetic) who is indifferent remains detached and unaffected.
आब गया आदर गया, नैनन गया सनेह। यह तीनों तब ही गये, जबहिं कहा कुछ देह।।३७५।।
When you say 'give me something,' respect, honor, and affection all go away. These three depart only when you ask for something.
अनमाँगा उत्तम कहा, मध्यम माँगि जो लेय। कहैं कबीर निकृष्टि सो, पर धर धरना देय।।३७६।।
Not asking is the best; asking and receiving is average. Kabir says, asking for something lowers one's dignity.
अनमाँगा तो अति भला, माँगि लिया नहिं दोष। उदर समाता माँगि ले, निश्च्य पावै योष।।३७७।।
Not asking is very good; there is no fault in asking if necessary. One should be content with what is received through begging.
तू तू करूं तो निकट है, दुर-दुर करू हो जाय। जों गुरु राखै त्यों रहै, जो देवै सो खाय।।४०४।।
When I say 'You, you,' it seems close, but when I say 'far, far,' it seems distant. Only what the guru preserves remains, and what is given by others is consumed.
दया और धरम का ध्वजा, धीरजवान प्रमान। सन्तोषी सुख दायका, सेवक परम सुजान।।४०९।।
The flag of compassion and righteousness is flown by the patient. The contented and wise servant is the giver of happiness.
जब लग भक्ति सकाम है, तब लग निष्फल सेव। कहैं कबीर वह क्यों मिलै, निहकामी निजदेव।।४१३।।
As long as devotion is filled with desires, all service remains fruitless. Kabir says, how can one meet the selfless Divine with a mind full of desires?
भक्तन की यह रीति है, बंधे करे जो भाव। परमारथ के कारने, यह तन रहो कि जाव।।४१८।।
This is the way of devotees: they act with boundless love. For the sake of ultimate truth, they are indifferent to whether the body survives or not.
कबीरा पगरा दूरि है, आय पहुँची साँझ। जन-जन को मन राखता, वेश्या रहि गयी बाँझ।।४४६।।
Kabir's journey is far, and the evening has arrived. He keeps everyone’s heart, while the courtesan remains barren.
कहते तो कहि जान दे, गुरु की सीख तु लेय। साकट जन औ श्वान को, फेरि जवाब न देय।।४५२।।
If they say, say you know; take the Guru's teaching. Don’t reply to the hypocrites and dogs again.
बहता पानी निर्मला, बंधे सो गंदा होए। साधु जन रमता भला, दाग न लागै कोय।।४५७।।
Flowing water is pure, but water that is contained becomes dirty. The saint who wanders is virtuous, no stain attaches to him.
तन मन ताको दीजिए, जोको विषया नाहि। आपा सब ही डारि के, राखै साहिब माहिं।।४७८।।
Give your body and mind to the one who is free from desires. Leave all else and keep only the Master.
दुख सुख एक समान है, हरष शोक नहिं व्याप। उपकारी निहकामता, उपजै छोह न ताप।।५७६।।
Pain and pleasure are the same, there is no attachment to joy or sorrow. The one who is truly compassionate remains unaffected by these emotions and does not suffer from heat or cold.
निर्बेरी निहकामता, स्वामी सेती नेह। विषया सो न्यारा रहे, साधुन का मत येह।।५८८।।
True renunciation and devotion are to be with the Lord. The worldly matters remain separate; this is the belief of saints.
टूका माही टक दे, चीर माहि सो चीर। साधु देत न सकुचिये, यों कथि कहहिं कबीर।।५९०।।
One stitch in the cloth makes it whole. Do not hesitate to give; this is what Kabir says.
साधु चलत रो दीजिए, कीजै अति सनमान। कहैं कबीर कछु भेट धरु, अपने बित्त अनुमान।।५९२।।
When a saint leaves, let him go with utmost respect. Kabir says, give some gift, according to your means.
बिरछा कबहुं न फल भखै, नदी न संचवै नीर। परमारथ के कारने, साधु धरा शरीर।।५९६।।
A tree does not eat its own fruit, and a river does not drink its own water. Similarly, a saint does not seek personal gain; he holds his body for the sake of altruism.
सन्त मता गजराज का, चाले बन्धन छोड़। जग कुत्ता पीछै फिरै, सुनै न वाका सोर।।६००।।
A saint is like a wise elephant, who leaves the bonds of worldly attachments. The world chases after false things and does not hear the true call.
कमल पत्र हैं साधु जन, बसै जगत के माहिं। बालक केरि धाय ज्यों, अपना जानत नाहिं।।६०४।।
Saints are like lotus petals in the world, unaware of their own greatness, like a child who does not know its own value.
आशा तजि माया तजै, मोह तजै अरु मान। हरष शोक निंदा तजै, कहैं कबीर संत जान।।६०५।।
A saint abandons hope, illusion, attachment, and pride. He renounces joy, sorrow, and criticism. This is what Kabir describes as a true saint.
आसन तो एकान्त करैं, कामिनी संगत दूर। शीतल संत शिरोमनी, उनका ऐसा नूर।।६१०।।
A saint should practice solitude, keeping away from worldly pleasures. The serene and distinguished saint shines with such divine light.
उड़गण और सुधाकरा, बसत नीर के संग। यों साधु संसार में, कबीर पड़त न फंद।।६१३।।
The moon and the nectar reside with the water. Similarly, a saint lives in the world but is not caught in its traps.
कबीर हमारा कोई नहिं, हम काहू के नाहिं। पारै पहुंची नाव ज्यौं, मिलिके बिछुरी जाहिं।।६३२।।
Kabir says, we belong to no one and no one belongs to us. Like a boat reaching its destination, people part ways upon meeting.
तन को जोगी सब करै, मन को करैं न कोय। सहजै सब सिधि पाइये, जो मन जोगी होय।।६३८।।
Everyone can practice physical asceticism, but no one practices mental discipline. The true achievement is attained effortlessly by those who discipline the mind.
बोली ठोली मसखरी, हंसी खेल हराम। मद माया और इस्तरी, नहिं सन्तन के काम।।६३९।।
Chatter, mockery, laughter, and play are forbidden. The intoxication of illusion and women’s allure have no place in the work of saints.
उदर समाता मांग ले, ताको नाहिं दोष। कहैं कबीर अधिका गहै, ताकी गति न मोष।।६४६।।
Taking what fills the stomach is not a fault. Kabir says, those who gather excessively, their path is not secure.
उदर समाता अन्न ले, तनहि समाता चीर। अधिकहिं संग्रह ना करै, तिसका नाम फकीर।।६४७।।
Taking enough food for the stomach is fine, and covering the body with sufficient clothing is acceptable. One who does not gather excess is called a true renunciant.
साधु संगत परिहरै, करै विषय को संग। कूप खनी जल बावरे, त्याग दिया जल गंग।।६५८।।
The company of saints abandons the association with worldly desires. They forsake the well of water and embrace the Ganges river.
विंतदय धरमक ध्वजा, धीरजवान प्रमान। सन्तोषी सुख दायका, सेवक परम सुजान।।६७१।।
The flag of righteousness is held by the patient; contentment brings joy, and a wise servant is truly skilled.
निरबन्धन बंधा रहै, बंधा निरबंध होय। कर्म करै करता नहीं, दास कहावै सोय।।६८५।।
The one who is bound by ties is bound by no ties at all. A person who does not perform actions is called a true servant.
निहकामी निरमल दशा, नित चरणों की आश। तीरथ इच्छा ता करै, कब आवै वे दास।।६८८।।
One who is free from desires and maintains a pure state, always hoping for the Guru's presence, performs pilgrimage as a true devotee.
निर्पक्षी की भक्ति है, निर्मोही को ज्ञान। निरद्वंदी की मुक्ति है, निर्लोभी निर्बान।।६९८।।
Devotion of the impartial brings knowledge; the knowledge of the detached leads to liberation. The free from conflict attain final peace.
भक्ति भेष बहु अन्तरा, जैसे धरनि अकाश। भक्त लीन गुरु चरण में, भेष जगत की आश।।७०१।।
Devotion can be concealed under many disguises, just as the sky is covered by the earth. A true devotee is absorbed in the guru's feet, disregarding the world's appearance.
भक्ति की यह रीति है, बंधे करे जो भाव। परमारथ के कारने, यह तन रहो कि जाव।।७१०।।
The nature of devotion is to bind with feelings. For the sake of higher purpose, whether this body remains or not, does not matter.
लेने को गुरु नाम है, देने को अन्न दान।। तरने को आधीनता, बूड़न को अभिमान।।७३८।।
To receive, there is the name of the Guru; to give, there is the offering of food. For crossing over, there is humility; for sinking, there is pride.
नाम रतन धन पाय के, गांठी बांध न खोल। नहिं पाटनहिं पार भी, नहिं गाहक नहिं मोल।।७३९।।
The name is a precious jewel, but once it is obtained, it cannot be bound or sold. It cannot be used for trading or profit.
कहा भरोसा देह का, बिनसि जाय छिन मांहि। सांस सांस सुमिरन करो, और जतन कछु नांंहि।।७४०।।
Where is the trust in the body, which perishes in an instant? Instead, remember each breath and do not rely on worldly efforts.
कबीर हरि-हरि सुमिरि ले, प्राण जाहिंगे छूट। घर के प्यारे आदमी, चलते लेंगे लूट।।७५८।।
Kabir says that by remembering Hari (God), one's soul is liberated. Those who are dear at home may end up taking away the loot (worldly gains).
गुणवेता औ द्रव्य को, प्रीति करै सब कोय। कबीर प्रीति सो जानिये, इनते न्यारी होय।।८२१।।
Everyone shows love for wealth and material things. Kabir says, true love is something entirely different from this.
इत पर घर उत है घरा, बनिजन आये हाट। करम करीना बेचि के, उठि करि चालो बाट।।८३६।।
This is the house of love, not a place for traders to come and go. Selling your actions like merchandise, get up and continue on your path.
कबीर खेत किसान का, मिरगन खाया झारि।। खेत बिचारा क्या करै, धनी करै नहिं वारि।।८३७।।
Kabir says, the field belongs to the farmer, but the deer have eaten the crop. What can the helpless field do? The owner does not care about it.
कबीर यह संसार है, जैसा सेंमल का फूल। दिन दस के व्यवहार में, झूठे रंग न फूल।।८३८।।
Kabir says, this world is like a cotton flower. In ten days, its false colors do not last.
दुनिया सेती दोसती, होय भजन में भंग। एका एकी राम सों, कै साधुन के संग।।८४०।।
Friendship with the world causes disruption in devotion. True unity is with Ram alone, and with the company of the saints.
क्या करिये क्या जोड़िये, छोड़ जीवन काज। छाडि छाडि सब जात हैं, देह गेह धन राज।।८४८।।
What to do and what to join, abandon the affairs of life. All are left behind, including body, home, wealth, and kingdom.
तन सराय मन पाहरु, मनसा उतरी आय। को काहू का है नहीं, देखा ठोंकि बजाय।।८५२।।
The body is an inn, the mind is a guest. The mind has come down from its desires. Nothing belongs to anyone; it is all merely observed and abandoned.
तू मति जाने बावरे, मेरा है सब कोय। प्रान पिण्ड सो बंधि रहा, सो नहिं अपना होय।।८८०।।
Don't be foolish and think that everything is yours. Even your life and body, bound together, are not truly your own.
जिसका रहना उतघरा, सो क्यों जोड़े मित्त। जैसे घर पर पाहुना, रहै उठाये चित्त।।८८६।।
Why form attachments to those who are temporary residents? Like a guest in a house, they will leave with their belongings.
यह बिरियां तो फिरि नहिं, मन में देख विचार। आया लाभहि कारनै, जनम जुआ मति हार।।९२८।।
These worldly pleasures do not last, think and consider in your mind. Gains have come for a reason; life is like a gamble where the mind loses.
हाड़ जरै ज्यौं लाकड़ी, केस जरै ज्यों घास। सब जग जरता देखि करि, भये कबीर उदास।।९३२।।
Flesh burns like wood, hair burns like grass. Seeing the whole world burning, Kabir became despondent.
एक दिन ऐसा होयगा, सब सों परै बिछोह। राजा राना राव रंक, सावधान क्यों नहिं होय।।९३८।।
One day, there will be separation from everyone. Why are not the kings, nobles, and common people alert?
जहां न जाको गुन लहै, तहां न ताको ठांव। धोबी बसके क्या करै, दिगम्बर के गांव।।९४२।।
Where one does not find any virtues, there is no place for them. What can the washerman do in the village of the naked ascetic?
हस्ती चढ़िये ज्ञान का, सहज दुलीचा डार। स्वान रूप संसार है, भूंकन दे झकमार।।९४४।।
The self rises with knowledge, like a simple piece of cloth. The world is like a dog; barking causes it to stir.
या दुनिया में आय के, छांडि देय तू ऐंठ। लेना है सो लेय ले, उठी जात है पैंठ।।९६१।।
Having come into this world, abandon your arrogance. Take what you need, as the market is about to close.
जिहि जिवरी ते जग बंधा, त जनि बंधै कबीर। जासी आटा लौन ज्यौं, सोन समान शरीर।।९६४।।
The world is bound by that delicate thread, Kabir says, do not bind yourself to it. The golden body will perish like flour and salt.
कहते को कहि जान दे, गुरु की सिख तूं लेय। साकट जान और स्वान को, फेरि जवाब न देय।।९७०।।
Speak what you have to say, then follow the Guru's teachings. Do not engage again with the ignorant or dogs.
कबीर यह तन जात है, सको तो राखु बहोर। खाली हाथो बह गये, जिनके लाख करोर।।९७३।।
Kabir says, this body is passing away, if you can, save it again. Many with millions passed away empty-handed.
या दुनिया दो रोज की, मत कर यासो हेत। गुरु चरनन चित लाइये, जो पूरन सुख देत।।९७४।।
This world is temporary, do not develop deep attachment to it. Focus your mind on the Guru's feet, which bring complete happiness.
कबीर संगी साधु का, दल आया भरपूर। इन्द्रिन को तब बांधिया, या तन कीया घूर।।९७६।।
Kabir says, when the company of saints arrives in full force, Only then are the senses controlled, and the body turned to ashes.
कहैं कबीर देय तू, जब लग तेरी देह। देह खेह हो जायेगी, कौन कहेगा देह।।९७९।।
Kabir says, give while you still have your body. When the body turns to dust, who will ask for it?
गान्ठि होय सो हाथ कर, हाथ होय सो देह। आगे हाट न बानिया, लेना है सो लेह।।९८४।।
Whatever you have in hand, take it as your body. Ahead, there is no market or merchant, take what you can now.
शीतलता तब जानिये, समता रहै समाय। विष छोड़ै निरबिस रहै, सब दिन दूखा जाय।।९९७।।
True coolness is known when the mind remains in equanimity. By renouncing poison and staying free from it, all sorrow disappears.
करक गड़न दुरजन बचन, रहै सन्त जन टारि। बिजुली परै समुद्र में, कहा सकेगी जारि।।९९८।।
The harsh words of the wicked may prick, but the saints let them pass. Just as lightning strikes the ocean, but it cannot burn it.
सन्त सन्तोषी सर्वदा, शब्दहिं भेद विचार। सतगुरु के परताप ते, सहज सील मतसार।।१०१०।।
A true saint is always content, understanding the depth of words. By the grace of the true guru, one attains a simple, virtuous, and pure essence.
अजहूं तेरा सब मिटै, जो जग मानै हार। घर में झगरा होत है, सो घर डारो जार।।१०३५।।
Even now you can overcome everything if you accept defeat in the world. If there is conflict in your house, burn it down and leave.
मैं मेरा घर जालिया, लिया पलीता हाथ। जो घर जारो आपना, चलो हमारे साथ।।१०३६।।
I have burned my house, taking the torch in hand. Those who burn their own house, come with me.
खुलि खेलो संसार में, बांधि न सक्कै कोय। घाट जगाती क्या करै, सिर पर पोट न होय।।१०५७।।
Play freely in the world; no one can bind you. What can a riverbank do, when there is no pot on the head?
बेटा जाये क्या हुआ, कहा बजावै थाल। आवन जावन होय रहा, ज्यों कीड़ी का नाल।।१०६१।।
What if the son leaves? What is there in the plate? The coming and going continues, like the passage of an ant.
स्वारथ कूं स्वारथ मिले, पड़ि पड़ि लूंबा बूंब। निस्प्रेही निरधार को, कोय न राखे झूंब।।१०९०।।
Self-interest leads to self-interest, resulting in endless cycles. The unattached and indifferent remain unperturbed by such cycles.
माया कू माया मिले, कर कर लम्बे हाथ। निस्प्रेही निरधार को, गाहक दीनानाथ।।१०९१।।
Illusion meets illusion, hands reaching out long. The unattached and non-dependent remain as the cherished customer of the Lord.
निज स्वारथ के कारनै, सेव करै संसार। बिन स्वारथ भक्ति करै, सो भावे करतार।।१०९३।।
One serves the world due to personal interest. One who serves with devotion without self-interest is loved by the Creator.
आप स्वारथी मेदिनी, भक्ति स्वारथी दास। कबीर जन परमार्थी, डारी तन की आस।।१०९४।।
You are self-interested earth, devotion is self-interested servant. Kabir's followers are selfless, abandoning attachment to the body.
प्रीत रीत सब अर्थ की, परमारथ की नाहिं। कहैं कबीर परमारथी, बिरला कोई कलि माहि।।१०९५।।
Love for worldly methods is all for gain, there is no true selflessness. Kabir says, in this age, true selflessness is rare.
परमारथ पाको रतन, कबहुं न दीजै पीठ। स्वारथ सेमन फूल है, कली अपूठी पीठ।।१०९६।।
True selflessness is a precious gem, never give it up. Self-interest is like a flower, while the bud is unripe.
सुख के संगी स्वारथी, दुख मे रहते दूर। कहैं कबीर परमारथी, दुख सुख सदा हजूर।।१०९७।।
The one who is selfish stays away in times of sorrow, while the selfless one remains present in both joy and sorrow.
जो कोय करे सो स्वारथी, अरस परस गुन देत। बिन किया करै सो सुरमा, परमारथ के हेत।।१०९८।।
The one who does something for personal gain is selfish, giving superficial virtues. One who acts without any selfish motive is a true hero, for the sake of selflessness.
स्वारथ सूका लाकड़ा, छांह बिहूना सूल। पीपल परमारथ भजो, सुख सागर को मूल।।१०९९।।
Self-interest is like a dry stick, without shade or comfort. Worship the Peepal tree of selflessness, which is the source of the ocean of happiness.
मरुं पर मांगू नहीं, अपने तन के काज। परमारथ के कारनै, मोहि न आवै लाज।।११००।।
I do not beg for anything in the desert of life or for personal needs. For the sake of selflessness, I feel no shame.
मना मनोरथ छांड़ि दे, तेरा किया न होय। पानी में घी नीकसै, रूखा खाय न कोय।।१११४।।
Abandon the desires of the mind; what you have done will not be achieved. Just as ghee does not flow in water, so does not a dry diet fulfill.
मन गोरख मन गोविंद, मन ही औघड़ सोय। जो मन राखै जतन करि, आपै करता होय।।११३४।।
The mind is like Gorakh, the mind is like Govind; it is indeed a wandering ascetic. The one who diligently maintains the mind, becomes the doer himself.
चिन्ता चित्त बिसारिये, फिर बूझिये नहिं आन। इन्द्री पसारा मेटिये, सजह मिलै भगवान।।११५२।।
Forget the worries of the mind, and then do not seek elsewhere. Remove the distractions of the senses, and you will naturally find God.
माया जात है, सुनो शब्द निज मोर। सुखियों के घर साध जन, सूमौं के घर चोर।।११६४।।
Illusion is fleeting; hear my words. In the homes of the content, there are saints, and in the homes of the rich, there are thieves.
सुकृत लागै साधु की, बादि विमुख की जाय। कै तो तल गाड़ी रहै, कै कोय और खाय।।११७५।।
Virtue is attributed to a saint, but after that, some become indifferent. Some stay near, while others benefit differently.
मीठा सब कोय खात है, विष ह्व लागै धाय। नीम न कोई पीवसी, सबै रोग मिट जाय।।११७७।।
Everyone eats sweet things, but poison seems to linger. If one drinks bitter neem, all ailments would disappear.
अपना तो कोई नहिं, हम काहू के नांहि। पार पहूंची नाव जब, मिलि सब बिछुड़े जांहि।।१२१३।।
There is no true ownership; we belong to no one. When the boat reaches the other shore, all those who were separated are reunited.
यह जग कोठी काठ की, चहुंदिस लागी आग। भीतर रहै सो जलि मुये, साधु अबरे भाग।।१२४०।।
This world is a wooden mansion with fire blazing all around. Those who stay inside it burn and die; the saint escapes.
कबीर निन्दक मरि गया, अब क्या कहिये जाय। ऐसा कोई नाम मिला, बीड़ा लेय उठाय।।१२९२।।
Kabir says, the critic is dead, what more can be said? Such a name is found that lifts the burden from one’s shoulders.
पद जौरै साखी कहै, साधन पड़ि गयी रोस। काढ़ा जल पीवै नहीं, काढ़ि पीवन की होस।।१३०४।।
The position and the story say that the practice has become difficult. One does not drink the water drawn out; how can one drink that which is drawn out?
पानी मिलै न आप को, औरन बकसत छीर। आपन मन निहचल नहीं, और बंधावत धीर।।१३१४।।
You do not get water, but others are given milk. Your own mind remains unsettled, while you remain steadfast in holding others.
करनी गर्व निवारनी, मुक्ति स्वारथी सोय। कथनी तजि करनी करै, तब मुक्ताहल होय।।१३१६।।
Actions remove pride, and those seeking liberation should act selflessly. By abandoning mere words and focusing on actions, one achieves liberation.
चिउंटी चावल ले चली, बिच में मिल गयी दाल। कहैं कबीर दो न मिलै, इक ले दूजी डाल।।१३६८।।
An ant carried away a grain of rice, but got a bit of lentil too. Kabir says, if you can't have both, take one and leave the other.
नहाये धोये क्या भया, जो मन मैल न जाय। मीन सदा जल में रहै, धोये बास न जाय।।१३७८।।
What is the use of bathing and cleaning if the mind's impurity remains? Even though the fish lives in water, it still smells.
इहां ई शंबल करि लेउ, आगे विषयी वाट। स्वर्ग बिसाहन सब चले, जहं बनिया नहि हाट।।१४५४।।
In this world, if you accumulate wealth, it will only lead to a difficult path ahead. Even heaven is deserted; where there is no market for merchants.
ऊपर की दोऊ गई, हिय की गई हिराय। कहहिं कबीर जाके चारों गई, तासो कहा बसाय।।१४५८।।
Both external eyes are gone, and the internal heart is lost too. Kabir says, the one who has lost all four (external and internal), how can he be managed?
ए गणवन्ती बेलरी, तव गुण बरणि न जाय। जड़ काटे सो हरियरी, सींचे ते कम्हलाय।।१४६४।।
O flourishing vine, your qualities cannot be described. If one cuts your roots, you thrive; if watered, you wither.
कुरु बहियां बल आपनां, छांडु बिरानी आस। जाके आंगन नदिया बहै, सो कस मरत पियास।।१४७४।।
Use your own strength and abandon reliance on others. How can one die of thirst when a river flows through their courtyard?
काजर की ही कोठरी, काजर ही का कोट। तोंदी कारी ना भई, रही सो ओट हि ओट।।१४७८।।
In a room full of soot, wearing a coat of soot, the heart remains unaffected, hidden beneath layers of pretense.
काजर की ही होठरी, बुड़ा ई संसार। बलिहारी ताहि पुरुष की, पैठि जु निकलनि हार।।१४७९।।
This world is like a room full of soot, and everyone is drowning in it. Praise be to the one who can enter and come out unscathed.
गृह तज के भये उदासी, वन खंड तप के जाय। चोली थाके मारिया, बेरई चुनि चुनि खाय।।१४९६।।
After abandoning the household, one becomes a recluse and goes to the forest for penance. Despite all efforts, they are left with nothing but picking wild fruits.
जो जन झीने राम रस, विकसित कबहूं न रूख। अनुभव भाव न दरसये, ते नर दु:ख न सुख।।१५४१।।
Those who have tasted the essence of Ram, will never turn away from it. They neither show their feelings nor experience happiness or sorrow.
ढिग बूडे उछले नहीं, इहै अंदेसा मोहिं। सलिल मोह की धार में, का निंदिआई तोहिं।।१५५३।।
The wooden log does not float even when it is old; this is the feeling in me. In the current of the stream of illusion, how can you be indifferent?
नित खरसान, लोह घुन छुटे। नित की गोष्टि, माया मोह टूटे।।१५७३।।
Daily, the iron rusts away. Daily gatherings break the attachment and illusion.
पक्षापक्षी के कारण, सब जग गया भुलान। निरपक्ष होय के हरि भजे, सोई सन्त सुजान।।१५८४।।
Due to the conflicts between factions, the whole world is confused. The wise are those who worship Hari with impartiality.
मच्छ बिकाने सब गये, धीमर के दरबार। अंखियां तेरी रतनारी, तुम क्यों पैन्हीं जाल।।१६२८।।
Everyone went to the fish market, to the fisherman’s court. Your eyes are like precious jewels; why then do you wear the net?
ये कबीर ते उतरिह रहु, तेरो संमल परोहन साथ। शंबल घटे न पगु थका, जीव विराने हाथ।।१६५९।।
Kabir will remain detached from you, with your companion and support. The pilgrimage will not tire the feet, but the soul's thirst will be quenched.
रतन का जतन करि, माटी का सिंगार। आया कबीरा फिरि गया, झूठा है संसार।।१६६१।।
Care for jewels and decorate with earth. Kabir came and went, this world is false.
रामनाम जिन चीन्हिया, झीने पिंजर तासु। रैनि न आवे नींदरी, अंग न चढ़िया मांसु।।१६६४।।
Those who recognize the name of Ram, find the cage of the body. Night does not bring sleep, and flesh does not satisfy.
राउर के पिछवारे, गावें चारों सन। जीव परा बहु लूट में, नहिं कछु लेन न देन।।१६६५।।
At your back, the four directions are singing. The living being is in much loot, with nothing to gain or lose.
हौं जाना कुलहंस हौ, ताते कीन्हा संग। जो जानत बगु बावरा, ठये न देतेऊं अंग।।१६८०।।
I know the true self, why should I join with others? Those who understand the true essence do not get entangled in falsehood.
सुगना सेमर बेगि तजि, तेरी घने बिगूची पांख। ऐसा सेमर सेइया, जाके हृदय न आंख।।१७०३।।
The beautiful peacock forsakes the Seemar tree quickly; its dense feathers adorn you. Such a peacock is rare, who has the heart but not the eyes.
हंसा सरवरि तजि चले, देही पारिगौ सून। कहहिं कबीर सुनहु हौ सन्तो, ते दर तेई थून।।१७११।।
The swan leaves the lake and goes to the empty shore. Kabir says, listen, O saints, there are thirty-three doors at that threshold.
कबीर बहुत जतन करि कीजिये, सब फल जाय नसाय। कबीर संचै सूम धन, अन्त चोर लै जाय।।१७३२।।
Kabir says, despite much effort, all the fruits may be lost. Kabir advises to accumulate true wealth, for in the end, the thief takes it all.
जौ रोऊं तो बल घटै, हंसौं तौ राम रिसाइ। मनही मांहि बिसूरणां, ज्यूं घुंण काठहि खाइ।।१७६३।।
If I cry, my strength diminishes; if I laugh, Ram becomes displeased. My mind is tormented internally, like a piece of wood being eaten by termites.
सुखिया सब संसार है, खयै अरु सोवै। दुखिया दास कबीर है, जागै अरु रोवै।।१७८०।।
The entire world is happy, eating and sleeping. The unfortunate servant Kabir is awake and weeping.
पंषि उडाणी गगन कूं, प्यंड रह्या परदेस। पांणी पीया चंच बिन, भूलि गया यहु देस।।१७९९।।
The bird flew to the sky, remaining far away from its land. It forgot this land after drinking water without disturbance.
जिनि पाया तिनि सुगह गह्या, रसनां लागी स्वादि। रतन निराला पाइया, जगत ढाल्या बादि।।१८१२।।
Those who have attained it, hold it with ease; it tastes sweet to the tongue. They have found the unique gem, having discarded the worldly attachment.
मानसरोवर सुभर जल, हंसा केलि कराहिं। मुकताहल मुकता चुगैं, अब उड़ि अनत न जाहिं।।१८१८।।
The beautiful waters of Mansarovar are enjoyed by the swans. The liberated souls taste the nectar, never to return.
बासुरि गमि न रैंणि गमि, नां सुपनैं तरगंम। कबीर तहां बिलंबिया, जाहं छाहड़ो न घंम।।१८४८।।
The flute does not travel, nor does it wander; it remains at rest. Kabir says, there is no delay where there is no shadow or ego.
रचनहार कूं चीन्हि लै, खौवे कूं कहा रोइ। दिल मंदिर मैं पैसि करि, तांणि पछेवड़ा सोइ।।१८७१।।
Recognize the Creator; why cry over worldly losses? Enter the temple of the heart and realize the truth within.
चिंतामणि मन में बसै, सोई चित मैं आणि। बिन चिंता चिंता करै, इहैं प्रभु की बाणि।।१८७३।।
The philosopher's stone resides in the mind, bringing forth whatever is desired. Worry not, for the Lord’s will takes care of everything.
चिंता न करि अचिंत रहु, साई है सम्रथ। पसु पंषेरू जीव जंत, तिनको गांडिं किसा ग्रंथ।।१८७६।।
Do not worry, remain carefree, for the Lord is all-powerful. He provides for every creature, be it animals or birds.
संत न बांधै गांठड़ी, पेट समाता लेइ। सांई सूं सनमुख रहै, जहां मांगै तहां देइ।।१८७७।।
The saint does not hoard, he takes only what fits in his belly. He remains facing the Lord, who provides wherever needed.
मीठा खांण मधुकरीं, भांति भांति को नाज। दावा किसही का नहीं, बिन बिलाइति बड़ राज।।१८८०।।
Sweet is the taste of alms, with a variety of foods. But nothing belongs to anyone; without earning, even a kingdom is meaningless.
पासि विनंठा कपड़ा, कदे सुरांग न होइ। कबीर त्याग्या ग्यान करि, कनक कामनी दोई।।१८९०।।
A cloth that is well-folded will not develop any wrinkles. Kabir says, after gaining true knowledge, I have renounced both wealth and women.
जाता है सो जांण दे, तेरी दसा जाई। खेवटिया की नाव ज्यूं, घणों मिलेंगे आई।।१८९२।।
Let go of what is leaving; your situation will change. Just like a boatman who finds many new passengers, you too will encounter many new opportunities.
सत गंठी कोपीन है, साध न मानै संक। राम अमलि माता रहै, ते गिणं इंद्र कौ रंक।।१८९४।।
A true ascetic wears a simple loincloth and does not indulge in doubts. Even Indra, the king of gods, seems like a pauper in comparison to one who is intoxicated with the divine name of Ram.
दावै दाझण होत है, निरदावै निरसंक। जे नर निरदावै रहैं, ते गिणैं इंद्र को रंक।।१८९५।।
Those who are attached to desires suffer, while those without desires remain fearless. Even Indra, the king of gods, seems like a pauper compared to one who is detached.
खेत न छाडै सूरिवां, झझै द्वै दल मांहि। आसा जीवन मरण की, मन मैं आंणै नाहि।।१९१५।।
The true hero does not abandon the field, even when it is divided into two parts. There is no hope in the mind about life and death.
जिस मरनै से जग डरै, सो मेरे आनंद। कब मरिहूं कब देखिहूं, पूरन परमानंद।।१९१८।।
That which causes fear to the world is my joy. When will I die and when will I see the complete bliss?
आप सवारथ मेदनीं, भगत सवारथ दास। कबीर राम सवारथी, जिनि छाड़ी तन की आस।।१९३२।।
One who is self-serving is the master of the world; the devotee is the servant of the Lord. Kabir says, the one who has abandoned all desires for the body is the true servant of Ram.
झल ऊठा झाोली जली, खपरा फूटिम फूटि। जोगी था सो रमि गया, आसणि रही बिभूति।।१९४४।।
The burning flame has risen, the pot is shattered. The yogi who was there has gone, and the seat remains covered in ashes.
पाणीं माहै प्रजली, भई अप्रबल आगि। बहती सलिता रहि गई, मंछ रहे जल त्यागि।।१९४९।।
Water that was once on fire has become a fierce blaze. The flowing stream remains, but the fish have abandoned the water.
कबीर जोगी बनि बस्या, षणि खाये कंद मूल। नां जाणौं किस जड़ी थै, अमर भए असथूल।।१९५८।।
Kabir became a yogi and lived on roots and tubers. I do not know which herb made him immortal and incorporeal.
दाता तरवर दया फल, उपगारी जीवंत। पंषा चले दिसावरां, विरषा सुफल फलंत।।१९६३।।
The tree of the giver bears fruit of compassion, which is beneficial to the living. The birds go to different directions, and the rain produces fruitful results.
ऐसा कोई ना मिले, अपना घर देइ जराइ। पंचूं लरिका पटिक करि, रहै राम ल्यौं लाइ।।१९६७।।
No one is found who will set fire to their own house. Five children are dressed as beggars, while Ram remains in the same place.
ऐसा कोई ना मिले, जासौं रहिये लागि। सब जग जलता देखिये, अपणीं अपणीं आगि।।१९६८।।
No one is found who remains constant. Seeing the whole world burning, one must attend to their own fire.
हम घर जाल्या आपणां, लिया मूराड़ा हाथिम। अब घर जालौं तास का, जे चलै हमारे साथि।।१९७४।।
We have burned our own house and taken a handful of ashes. Now, if the house burns with us, let it be.
पाइ पदारथ पेलि करि, कंकर लीया हाथि। जोड़ी बिछुटी हंस की, पड्या बंगा कै साथि।।१९७५।।
Having obtained the treasure, I took a pebble in my hand. The pair of separated swans found it and rested by the riverbank.
कबीर गुदड़ी बीषरी, सौदा गया बिकाइ। खोटा बांध्या गांठड़ी, इब कुछ लिया न जाइ।।१९७७।।
Kabir's worn-out rag has been sold. The false knot that was tied, now nothing is taken.
पुरपाटण सुबस बसै, आनंद ढांये ढांइ। राम सनेही बाहिरा, ऊंजड़ मेरे भांइ।।१९८१।।
The old garment sits well, and the joy it brings is indescribable. The beloved of Ram is outside, and I am left behind.
राम जपत दालिद भला, टूटि घर की छांनि। ऊचे मंदिर जालि दे, जहां भगति न सारंगपांनि।।१९८८।।
Chanting Ram is good for the poor, even if the roof of the house breaks. Set fire to the high temple where devotion does not reach.
निरबैरी निहकांमता, सांई सेती नेह। विषिया सूं न्यारा रहै, संतहि का अंग एह।।१९८९।।
Harmlessness and humility are the essence of love with the divine. Being detached from worldly pleasures, this is the true mark of a saint.
कांमणि अंग बिरकत भया, रत भया हरि नांहि। साषी गोरखनाथ ज्यूं, अमर भए कलि मांहि।।१९९९।।
The devotee's body has become detached, and he is absorbed in Hari. Just like Gorakhnath, he has become immortal in this Kali Yuga.
जदि बिषै पियारी प्रीति सूं, तब अंतर हरि नांहि। जब अंतर हरि जी बसै, तब विषिया सूं चित्त नांहि।।२०००।।
If one loves the world with deep affection, then the divine does not dwell within. When the divine resides within, the mind is not attracted to worldly pleasures.
स्वारथ को सबको सगा, सब सगलाही जांणि। बिन स्वारथ आदर करै, सो हरि की प्रीति पिछांणि।।२००२।।
Self-interest is dear to everyone, and everyone knows this. The one who respects without self-interest is known to have true love for Hari.
नर नारी सब नरक है, जब लग देह सकाम। कहै कबीर ते राम के, जे सुमिरै निहकाम।।२०४३।।
Both men and women are in hell as long as they desire bodily pleasures. Kabir says that those who remember Ram with selflessness are free from this hell.
जोरू जूठणि जगत की, भले बुरे का बीच। उत्तम ते अलगे रहैं, निकटि रहै सो नीच।।२०४९।।
The world’s pleasures are like a discarded woman, between good and bad. The noble stay away, those near are vile.
स्वामी हूंणां सोहरा, दोद्धा हूंणां दास। गाडर आंणी कूं, बांधी चरै कपास।।२०६४।।
The master becomes a groom, the servant becomes a shepherd. Tying the plow to the cow, he grazes the cotton.
साधु सती औ सिंह को, ज्यों लंघन त्यों शोभ। सिंह न मारै मींडका, साधु न बांधे लोभ।।२०९४।।
Saints, virtuous ones, and lions shine as they cross boundaries. A lion does not harm a mosquito, and a saint is not swayed by greed.
शिर राखे शिर जात है, शिर काटै शिर होय। उसे बाती दीप की, कटि उजियारा जोय।।२०९८।।
He who keeps his head safe maintains his dignity, while one who loses his head loses his honor. Like a lamp's wick, he who cuts it makes the light shine bright.
लालच लोभ न मोह मद, एकल भला अनीह। हरिजन सौरा राम सो, शिर बिन कदै न होय।।२१०४।।
Greed, desire, and delusion do not affect the one who is single and calm. The true devotee of Ram, such a person never loses his head.
सार बहै लोहा झरै, टूटे जिरह जंजीर। जम ऊपरि साटैकरी, चढिया दास कबीर।।२१२९।।
The essence flows like molten iron, breaking the chains of iron. Above death, Kabir has climbed, reaching the ultimate goal.
शूरा सोइ सराहिये, अंग न पहरे लोह। जूझै सब बंद खोलि कै, छांडे तनको मोह।।२१३५।।
One should praise the true brave, who do not need armor. They open all their barriers and shed their attachment to the body.
हारौं तो हरि मान है, जो जीतूं तौ दाव। पारब्रह्म सों खेलतां, जो शिर जाय तो जाव।।२१४४।।
If I lose, it is the honor of Hari, if I win, it is the wager. Playing with the Supreme Being, whether the head is lost or not.
चंदन काटा जड खनी, बांधिलिया शिर मार। कालि जा पंछी बसि गया, तिसका यह उपकार।।२१५३।।
Chandan was cut at the root, and his head was bound. The black bird settled there, this is his favor.
सब काहू का लीजिये, सांचा शब्द निहार। पक्षपात ना कीजिये, कहै कबीर बिचार।।२२०९।।
Take the essence from all; do not focus on superficial words. Do not show partiality, Kabir advises.
मांस मछलिया खात हैं, सुरापान सों हेत। ते नर नरकै जांहिंगे, ज्यों मूरी का खेत।।२२३९।।
Those who consume meat and fish, and drink alcohol, will go to hell like a field of mud.
